Flow
Life is a river. Day and night it flows without rest, moving toward the sea and toward distant horizons, vast and boundless, merging with heaven and earth. Such a flowing life is an ideal one. However far the current travels, it never leaves its source. The wider the basin, the deeper the essence it holds. Not a single drop is wasted, and every moment of flowing carries meaning.
The water flows on and never stops. It seems to follow the current, yet in truth it is always returning upstream. No sight is more beautiful than this. This is the water the heart longs for: to approach it, to draw near, to enter it, and finally to become one with it. When has water ever truly been taken away with a single ladle? When has it ever truly departed? The original remains the original. If one awakens to this, then I am the water.
If I am the water, why should I care about a speck of impurity in my hand? Why regret what flows away? If I am water, then let it flow. Do not remain still, for when water stands still life begins to dry. No. Remove the word “if.” Existence is real and needs no hypothesis. Take away the “if,” and I am water.
Water as it is. Returning to cloud. Cloud for a while. Still water.
Clouds drift and water flows. Movement is the expression of life. Go then and wander like a cloud. Only by going does one discover how vast heaven and earth are. Only by going can one return, and only after returning does one recognize again the origin where nothing truly exists.
The flow has gone far. Looking back, distant peaks appear in the season of falling snow. Drifting through the snow, one searches for footprints. In the moment a footprint appears, distant past and distant future meet. The present rises and fades, rises and fades again, flowing onward until it gathers into a river.
How wonderful life is, ancient and yet always new. Each flow brings awakening. Time has no past, present, or future; the three are one. The future is the past and the past is the future. Both live within the present that continually appears and disappears. Each moment forms eternity, and each moment lives within eternity.
Water, flow on. Flow through winding turns and past the straight pillars of bridges. Everywhere existence is flowing. Each shape of space gives form to time, and the years themselves move onward like water. Flow past smiling faces and sorrowful eyes, through one hollow and then another, over one ridge and then another, until at last returning to the vast sea, merging again with heaven and earth.
