When the noble family of Fan was in exile, an ordinary person stole a bell and ran with it. The bell was too large to carry on his back, so he tried to hammer it to pieces. But the bell made a sonorous bang as he hammered it. He was afraid that other people would come to snatch the bell; hastily, he covered his ears.
It made sense not to let other people hear the sound, but it was ridiculous to cover his ears and pretend the sound would not be heard.
