Brevity is the soul of wit.》要言不煩。

這句諺語直譯是「簡潔是機智的靈魂」，原先出自於莎士比亞的名劇Hamlet〈哈姆雷特〉，意思是articulate and intelligent communication should use　as few words as possible 清晰及睿智的溝通應使用最少的字，多用在勸告人若要表現自己的機智、趣味，講話則要說重點，不要囉哩叭唆，廢話一堆。

這句諺語不僅可以用在「說」，也可用在「寫」，指的是一個人若在寫作時想要表現機智，則必須力求精簡，不要做無謂的描述或重複。

其實要說到brevity is the soul of wit，最好的例子之一就是本專欄這兩年來所介紹的許多proverbs and sayings 諺語與格言，這些多是古往今來人們生活經驗和思想總和，轉化成短短幾個字或一句話。

在這些機智且簡潔的話語中，人們總能學到某些深刻的人生道理與啟示，因此有人說，要瞭解一種語言或文化，最有效的方式便是閱讀它的諺語與格言！
