陳遺至孝。母好食鐺底焦飯，遺作郡主簿，恆裝一囊，每煮食，輒貯收焦飯，歸以遺母。後值孫恩掠郡，郡守袁山松即日出征。時遺已聚斂得數斗焦飯，未及歸家，遂攜而從軍。與孫恩戰，敗，軍人潰散，遁入山澤，無以為糧，有飢餒而死者。遺獨以焦飯得活，時人以為至孝之報也。 

Chen Yi was a model of filial piety. His mother particularly enjoyed the scorched rice crust from cooking pots. While serving as the governors secretary, Chen would always keep a bag handy when meals were prepared, collecting the crispy burnt rice to bring home to his mother.

When Sun Ens forces raided the commandery, Governor Yuan Shansong immediately mobilized defenses. By then, Chen had accumulated several pecks of scorched rice. Unable to return home, he carried his stores with him into battle. After their defeat, the scattered soldiers fled to mountainous marshes where food became scarce - many perished from starvation. Only Chen survived thanks to his reserve of burnt rice. Contemporaries regarded this as divine reward for his exceptional filial devotion.
