天下無正聲，悅耳即為娛。No pure sound exists in this world. Only the pleasant one that makes you happy.
人間無正色，悅目即為姝。There is no standard beauty in this world. Only the agreeable one that makes you enjoy.
顏色非相遠，貧富則有殊。If the appearance differs not much, the girl from the haves or the have-nots that matters.
貧為時所棄，富為時所趨。People usually evade the have-nots; they cater to the haves.
紅樓富家女，金縷繡羅襦。In their red chamber, the rich girls knit their silk jackets.
見人不斂手，嬌痴二八初。Even in front of strangers, they still play coquette, albeit they are sixteen already.
母兄未開口，已嫁不須臾。Their parents need not worry about their marriage, for courtings are already there.
綠窗貧家女，寂寞二十餘。The poor girl of the have-nots remains single when she has been over twenty.
荊釵不直錢，衣上無真珠。She is wearing cheap hairpins, without any decoration on her clothes.
幾回人慾聘，臨日又踟躕。 Several times, people talk about betrothal, but in hesitation, they cancel the appointment.
主人會良媒，置酒滿玉壺。Only a good matchmaker like me will announce when the host fills up all the guests cups.
四座且勿飲，聽我歌兩途。Do not drink so fast. Let me say something first.
富家女易嫁，嫁早輕其夫。The rich girls are apt to wed. But they may look down on their husbands.
貧家女難嫁，嫁晚孝於姑。The poor girls are hard to wed, but they may be able and pliant daughters-in-law.
聞君欲娶婦，娶婦意何如？ I heard you want to get a daughter-in-law. Do you know the meaning of marriage?
