曾子之妻之市，其子隨之而泣。其母曰：“女還，顧反爲女殺彘。”妻適市來，曾子欲捕彘殺之。妻止之曰：“特與嬰兒戲耳。”曾子曰：“嬰兒非與戲也。嬰兒非有知也，待父母而學者也，聽父母之教。今子欺之，是教子欺也。母欺子，子而不信其母，非所以成教也。”遂烹彘也。

Mrs. Zeng Shen went to market with her son in tow, whining. She consoled her boy, "You go home first, I will kill and cook a pig for you when I am back." When she came back, Mr. Zeng wanted to fetch a pig and kill it. His wife stopped him, "I was just kidding with him." Mr. Zeng said, "You cannot kid with little children. They are innocent, and you are the model for them to copy. They learn things from their parents step by step. Now, you cheat on him means you are teaching him to cheat.  If a mother cheats her son, then he will not trust his mother anymore. That is not the right way to teach your son well." Accordingly, Mr. Zeng killed and cooked the pig.
