the dreamland remained nowhere in sight.

可堪孤館閉春寒，

Locked in this lone inn can I bear the chilly spring,

杜鵑聲裏斜陽暮。

and the homebound call by cuckoos singing amid sunset lingering?

驛寄梅花，魚傳尺素。

Plum bloosoms sent by coach, and letters brought by post;

砌成此恨無重數。

all became oft-repeated nostagia that had been unable to count.

郴江幸自繞郴山，

Why not does River Chen flow around Mount Chen only,

爲誰流下瀟湘去。

but for whom it flows southward and leaves here a lonesome me?
