literature在論文寫作中常作「研究文獻」，而非「文學」。在論文中的第一章緒論中常有literature review（文獻回顧）一節，若是篇幅較長也可獨立成一章。
literature是不可數名詞，因此表「許多文獻」要用much literature，不可用
*many literatures；但若是literature前有形容詞時，則可加不定冠詞a，例如a
substantial literature（大量文獻）。另外，若是指不同學科或種類的文獻時是可用literatures，例如psycholinguistic and neurolinguistic literatures（心理語言學和神經語言學的文獻），或者是用two types of literature。
