Irrigation ponds and communal laundry pits represent an ecosystem born of the coexistence between humans and water, forming an integral part of the cultural heritage. The Taoyuan Terrace is renowned as the "Land of a Thousand Ponds"; at their peak, these ponds numbered in the tens of thousands. Due to geological conditions resulting in short, swift streams and a scarcity of water sources, early settlers during the Qing Dynasty excavated these ponds to store water—a practice officially recorded as early as the sixth year of the Qianlong reign. Although the Hakka people subsequently maintained and managed them, the limited storage capacity of individual ponds made it difficult to cultivate two rice crops per year during droughts. This hardship fostered a Hakka lifestyle characterized by frugality and a deep appreciation for water conservation.
