Through Two Points Only One Straight Line Can Pass
(Theorem in geometry)

A planet once got married to a star,
and inside, voices talked of future war.
I only know what I was told in class:
through two points only one straight line can pass.

A stray dog chased us down an empty street.
I threw a stone; the dog would not retreat.
The king of Babel stooped to eating grass.
Through two points only one straight line can pass.

Your small sob is enough for many pains,
as locomotive power can pull long trains.
When will we step inside the looking-glass?
Through two points only one straight line can pass.

At times I stands apart, at times it rhymes
with you, at times we’s singular, at times
plural, at times I don’t know what. Alas,
through two points only one straight line can pass.

Our life of joy turns to a life of tears,
our life eternal to a life of years.
Our life of gold became a life of brass.
Through two points only one straight line can pass.

〈那是夏天,或它的尾聲〉

那是夏天,或它的尾聲,那時我聽得到
你最後一次從東到西的
腳步聲。世上
頭巾、書籍和人都被忘得一乾二淨。

It Was Summer, or Its End

It was summer, or its end, and I heard then
your steps as you went from east to west
for the last time. And in the world
kerchiefs and books and people were forgotten.

It was summer, or its end,
there were hours of afternoon
you were.
And for the first time you put on your shroud
and didn’t know.
For there were flowers embroidered on it.

〈在別的星球上,你或許是對的〉

在別的星球上,你或許是對的,
但不是在這兒。話講到一半,你突然陷入
無聲的哭泣,就像有人信寫到一半,鋼筆沒了墨水,

On Some Other Planet You May Be Right

"On some other planet you may be right,
but not here." In the middle of talking you shifted
to a silent weeping, as people shift from blue to black
in the middle of a letter when a pen goes dry,
or as they used to change horses during a journey.
Talk grew tired, tears are fresh.

Seeds of summer flew into the room
we were sitting in. In front of the window
there was an almond tree growing black:
one more warrior in the eternal battle
of the sweet against the bitter.

Look, just as time isnt inside clocks
love isnt inside bodies:
bodies only tell the love.

But we will remember this evening
the way swimmers remember the strokes
from one summer to the next. "On some other planet
you may be right, but not here."

〈悲傷和快樂〉

悲傷和快樂交替出現
就像水、水蒸氣和冰,
悲傷和快樂來自同一物質。
我們耳熟能詳。

愛與不愛,同一株玫瑰綻放的

Sorrow and Joy

Sorrow and joy alternating
like water and vapor and ice,
sorrow and joy from the same substance.
We knew.

Love and unlove, two colors
in a single rose, it’s wonderful,
an achievement of the rose’s cultivator
whose name stays with the rose.

Many years later we met again
without pain, each of us with our own tranquillity.
That was the Garden of Eden
but it was also hell.

〈間隙〉

在這些花朵變成果實的短暫間隙,
當花已凋零,果未初結之時,
我們會置身何處?在肉體與肉體之間
我們為對方製造了一個多麼美妙的間隙。
眼與眼的間隙,醒與寐的間隙。
既非白天也非黑夜的薄暮的間隙。

Between

Where will we be when these flowers turn into fruit
in the narrow between, when the flower is no longer a flower
and the fruit not yet a fruit. And what a wonderful between we made
for each other between body and body.
A between of eyes, between waking and sleep.
A twilight between light, not day and not night.

How your spring dress so quickly became a flag of summer
that flutters already in the first wind of fall.
How my voice was no longer my voice
but like a prophecy, almost.

What a wonderful between we were, like earth
in the clefts of the wall, a small stubborn earth
for the valiant moss, for the thorny caper bush
whose bitter fruit
sweetened what we ate together.

These are the last days of books.
Next come the last days of words. Some day
you will understand.
