愛蜜莉‧狄金森是19世紀美國文壇中的奇蹟。她接受過完整的正規教育，卻在33歲時全然隱居，從此長年一襲白衣，藉由純粹的生活與專注的詩文創作，成就自我生命的價值，可說是「象牙塔詩人」中的異數。她在寫下的一千七百多首詩作中反覆琢磨生命與死亡、愛與痛、神與人、自然與永恆，喜悅與悲傷、絕望與希望；難能可貴的是她沈思冥想所得的道理與洞見，直探我們內心深處那未曾或難以明言的感觸。

When one who died for truth was lain
In an adjoining room.
He questioned softly why I failed?
"For beauty," I replied.
"And I for truth - the two are one;
We brethren are," he said.
And so, as kinsmen met a-night,
We talked between the rooms,
Until the moss had reached our lips,
And covered up our names.
