Champion or Championship?

    也是一組易混淆的字詞，試讀以下的句子：

    After an exhausting game of five sets, Djokovic

 finally won the champion.

    (在共五盤令人筋疲力竭的比賽後，約克維奇贏得了冠軍)

    讀者也許覺得此句讀起來「怪怪的」。何故？因為當中的 “champion”應改為“championship”；這兩字皆為名詞

，但指涉對象卻大不相同：

1.     Champion: 指獲得冠軍的個人或隊伍，表示身分，僅

適用於人，如：

San Antonio Spurs is the champion of this NBA

season.

      註：San Antonio Spurs聖安東尼奧馬刺隊

      2.     Championship: 指冠軍之頭銜 (title)，不可等同於

人，如：

San Antonio Spurs wins its fifth championship

this year.

The legendary player lost the championship title

to a less-known young player.

    至於為何有此錯誤發生？筆者推斷多是因為學習者以

漢語邏輯使用英文所致；蓋漢語中的冠軍一詞可為上

列的(1)、(2)之意，使用上須從上下文判斷是屬(1)或

(2)之意，但英語中以兩種名詞表達(1)及(2)之意，

所以容易有誤用之情形。以下再請讀者判斷以下二句

正確與否?答案明日揭曉。

 With two national championships, the martial

 artist retires at the age of 31.

 註：Martial artist武術家

2.Correct

      The new champion  raises the trophy.

  註：trophy 獎杯
