七八年前, 我問老美同事這兩個字的差異, 他停頓思考了一會, 回說： ‘Uh... We always say cherry blossoms.....’ 一副茫然, 令人發噱. 後來我也打住, 就沒再問他. 基本上, 我很少用這兩個字, 怕別人會說我寫的太花俏, 也因此前幾回下意識沒提到(是有注意到). 我不是唸丙組植物系的, 但一番努力, 靠自己的資料整理出來. 也是因為它們就是在那裡, 會偶爾被用到, 不得不說.
這兩個字可以是名詞和不及物動詞. 中文字典大意都指開花, 花欉茂盛. 屬性上, bloom多是應用在觀賞性的花, 如水仙花, 玫瑰.., 而blossom是用在果樹上的花, 如梅子, 櫻桃... 然而兩者所代表的"開花'', 却是不同的階段, 在網路上有一個解釋很好, 如下：
"Blossom" can be a verb describing the process of a bud slowly opening up into a bloom, or it can be a noun which describes a flower which is in the early stages of "opening" up into full bloom. If you like blooming flowers, it means you appreciate the beauty of flowers at their brightest and best.

Blossom在動詞上是指小芽慢慢打開, 進而綻放bloom的過程, 或者blossom也可以當名詞, 是一朶正在早期萌發階段的花(flower). 如果你喜歡綻放的blooming花朶, 表示你欣賞花朵在最明亮和最佳時刻的美麗. (也就是blossom是初期的萌芽長蕾, 開始花開, 才有後面的盛開, 怒放 bloom. 所以各位不要看到字典上, 兩個字都是解釋成"開花", 就覺得它們完全相同. 也因為是有不同階段的含意, 這兩個字假借到商業上時, bloom是側重在茂盛/旺盛, 而blossom還有隱含正在成長, 上升增加的意思. ) 以下作個分類, 解釋和例句：
A. 植物學上的用法
A-1. 以名詞出現時.
The orchid blooms drew the most attention at the venue.蘭花的綻放在此場所吸引最多目光.
The flower fields are expected to remain in full bloom until the end of holiday. 這片花田在假期結朿前會保持綻放盛開.
This year's full-bloom period of orchid will fall in February. 今年的蘭花盛開季節會落在二月.
The annual plum blossom season is beginning. 年度的梅花季開始了.
Retail price of roses has risen by NT$5 per blossom before the holiday. 假期前, 每一朶玫瑰花己漲了5瑰. (這裡不管是觀賞型還是果樹型的花, 每一朶花的單位是用 blossom.)
A-2. 以不及物動詞出現時
Tourists visit a sea of flowers that are blooming in Taitung Valley. 觀光客造訪了在台東縱谷盛開的花海.
He plants the seeds to see the flowers blossom in three years. 他種了種子, 想在三年內看花萌發.
Visitors pose among newly-blossomed plum flowers. 觀光客在剛開的梅花間擺姿勢(拍照).
A-3. 兩個字同時放在一個句子, 更可看出前後順序了.
Cherry blossoms are in bloom in Nantou County. 櫻花的花開在南投縣正在怒放中.
Before the cherry blossoms bloom, Japan could get its sixth prime minister. 在櫻花的花開綻放前, 日本會有它的第六任首相. (這裡的bloom是動詞.)
Many flock to the area for the cherry blossoms that recently bloomed. 許多人蜂湧到此區域, 為了最近怒放的櫻花花開.
B. 轉為商業上正面/好景氣含意的例句.
B-1. 以名詞出現時
B-1-1. 青春煥發, 最(佳)有利的時期
She was in the bloom of youth. 她風華正茂. (字典上的例句.)
B-1-2. 大量出現/呈現/樣子...
Government spending is in full bloom. 政府支出是全力呈現著.
The full bloom of the PC refresh will come soon. PC換機(潮)的大量呈現會很快來臨.
B-2. 以不及物動詞出現時
Cautious optimism blooms like first flower of spring. 審慎的樂觀宛如春天第一個花朵盛開著.
Retailers' sales bloom in April. 零售業的業績在四月中很興旺.
Asia's bond markets has continued to blossom. 亞洲債市持續地發展/茂盛.
The stock market will blossom in May. 股市在五月份會開旺.

B-3. 以V+ing 當形容詞
The macro environment is healthy for the blooming e-commerce market. 大環境對興盛的電商市場是健康(有益)的.
blossoming innovations/demand. 成長中的創新/需求.
C. 轉為商業上負面含意的例句. (通常是以bloom (n.) + off ... 形式出現.)
The bloom is off Windows 7. 光釆不在Windows 7上面了.
The short-term results may be beautiful, but the bloom will soon be off the rose. 短期業績也許漂亮, 但是玫瑰花的綻放會很快消失. (意指業績會很快下來.)
Bloom comes off international stock funds. 國際股票型基金旺盛不再.
Apple is losing its bloom among Chinese shoppers. 蘋果在中國消費者間失去了光采.
D. blossom 的另外常見的動詞用法, 會以''發展成+into"的形式出現.
The market’s recent move is to blossom into a durable and powerful uptrend.市場近期的走勢會發展成一段可持續的又強勁的上升波段.
Growing appetite for leveraged loans could blossom into a big problem on Wall Street. 對摃捍型借款的上升慾望/渴求會對華爾街演化成大麻煩.
p.s.
1.這兩個字在商業上, 要翻譯成中文, 實在是要靠中文涵養, 因為它們不含很直接的表示, 如boom, bullish 等等, 我翻譯成中文, 要避免誤導. 用上了英文又覺得它們花俏, 不過可見老外的筆法有時也會呤詩作詞. (我以前買了二三十本的英詩和神話文學, 倒是沒有讀, 只當作歲月的紀念, 哈哈.) 但畢竟我又完成一篇了, 也對自己有幫助. 以上若有不順之處, 請指正.
2. 老外會用這些抽象式的單字在商業金融上, 多半和天時, 氣候, 事件有關, 這兩個字的出現當然會是在花開季節了.
3. 若論中文的"光釆", 類似這種抽象比喻型的英文單字, 在商業上, 我通常是用 luster, 再來是sheen, shine, sparkle ..
