在大嫂的鼓勵下，開始啃我生平第一本英本小說：life of Pi!(捲袖&握拳!)。雖然沒有想像中難，但也不太能以向來的略讀方式對待。依目前的進度，及老是不能專注在同一件事的惡習看來，全部看完恐怕已經是一年二年後的事了~(這還是樂觀的估計勒，呵呵)

今天學到的詞兒是memento mori，根據wiki的解釋是：

A memento mori (Latin 'remember that you will die') is an artistic or symbolic reminder of the inevitability of death. The expression 'memento mori' developed with the growth of Christianity, which emphasized Heaven, Hell, and salvation of the soul in the afterlife."

Wiki提到，一般認為，這個詞來自古羅馬，當羅馬將軍打勝仗在街上遊行時，會有將軍的隨從站在他後面，主要的工作是提醒將軍雖然今天是他的顛峰，但明天可能會失勢-更可能發生的是，被拉下台來。因此一般認為隨從會呼喊道："Memento mori"。也有些人猜測認為隨從可能說的是："Respice post te! Hominem te esse memento! Memento mori!"，意指：小心你的背後！要記得你是凡人，是會死亡的。'memento mori'人終將一死的概念就隨著強調的天堂、地獄、及來世靈魂救贖的基督教發展出來。

Life of Pi 裡的那一段是這樣說的：My life is like a memento mori painting from European art: there is always a grinning skull at my side to remind me of the folly of human ambition. I mock this skull. I look at it and I say, ”You’ve got the wrong fellow. You may not believe in life, but I don’t believe in death. Move on!” The skull snickers and moves ever closer, but that doesn't surprise me. The reason death sticks so closely to life isn't biological necessity-it's envy. Life is so beautiful that death has fallen in love with it, a jealous, possessive love that grabs at what it can.

我的人生就像歐洲的警世畫作，總會出現骷髏頭來提醒自己人類野心的愚昧。我對著這樣的骷髏頭戲謔道：你挑錯人了。你或許不相信生命，但我也不買死亡的帳。骷髏頭訕笑著又更靠了上來。死亡這麼接近生命並非生物的必然，而是羨慕。正因為生命如此美好，死亡因而戀上了它，那種充滿嫉妒而佔有的愛讓死亡儘可能地抓著它。

真的很棒的哲理，是吧！
