hello friends
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today, we have an activity lesson.
And the name of our lesson is:
Gardening is fun, right?
Gardening is an activity, or something we do,
and many people like to do it for fun, right?
If you have a place outside your apartment or home
where you plant plants, then we can call that your garden.
But sometimes people can have an indoor garden as well, right?
But usually, a garden is a place where you have ground,
so you have a garden around the first floor of your house.
In the ground, you plant things like food
you can eat or pretty flowers
and take care of them — that is gardening, right?
And today, gardening is an activity
many people would like to do.
Many people would like to plant their own
vegetables and flowers.
Right. Now to learn more about this fun activity,
let’s go to our reading:
Gardening is fun
You can plant many different things in a garden.
You can plant flowers.
They are beautiful.
You can plant vegetables.
They are delicious.
Gardening isn’t hard.
First, you plant some seeds. Then you water them.
Soon, little green plants come up from the soil.
Take good care of them and watch them grow.
Thanks, Esther.
Gardening can be a fun activity,
but it’s also a lot of work.
I haven’t done it in a long time
because I don’t have a
garden outside my apartment.
Right, you do need to have some space to have a garden.
Now let’s go to our Find It question.
Our question is: What comes up after about two weeks?
What comes up after about two weeks?
Well friends, you will definitely find out
if you listen carefully to today’s lesson.
Now, let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our keywords.
這裡問 James:你喜歡園藝嗎?
Do you like gardening, James?
動詞 garden 就是從事園藝、在院子裡種東西,
而名詞 garden 是花園或菜園。
Julie 很喜歡園藝喔!她在園子裡種了花和蔬菜。
I plant both flowers and vegetables in my garden.
Vegetable 就是蔬菜。
園藝的樂趣就是可以看著植物生長:
I can watch my plants grow.
動詞 grow 就是生長。
Julie 說種東西之前要先整理好土地,然後播下種子:
Then I plant seeds.
名詞 seed 就是種子。
James 說:「然後你就澆水,對吧?」
And after that, you water them, right?
動詞 water 就是給……澆水。
Do you like gardening, James?
Not really. I’m not very good at it.
I’m not either.
But I enjoy it.
I plant both flowers and vegetables in my garden.
That’s nice. A garden is a lot of work. It takes a lot of time.
Yes, but it’s fun. I can watch my plants grow. That makes me happy.
We start with Julie asking James a question.
She asks, Do you like gardening?
James, do you like gardening?
Yes. When you are doing the activity,
you are gardening or taking care of your garden, right?
So the word garden is both a noun and a verb.
What you do when you plant plants —
that’s the action, the verb: garden.
And the noun is the place where you do it — your garden.
Well, James says “Not really.”
He doesn’t really like gardening. He’s not very good at it.
And we hear the reason why.
James says, I’m not very good at it.
If you’re not very good at something,
it means that you can try to do it,
but you’re not always doing a good job at that, right?
You don’t have the skills for it.
That doesn’t mean you can’t learn it, though. But right now,
James says: I’m not very good at it.
But I am good at finding today’s calendar phrase:
I’m not very good at it.
I’m not very good at it.
I’m not very good at it.
我不是很擅長。
Grandpa, do you like gardening?
No, I’m not very good at it.
Do you like fishing?
No, I’m not very good at it.
Do you like hiking?
No, I’m not very good at it.
What are you good at?
Sleeping!
Yes, you’re very good at that.
I’m not very good at it.
我不是很擅長。
Julie tells James that she’s not very good at it either.
Julie tells James that she’s not very good at it either.
This word either here means also.
She is also not very good at gardening.
But she does enjoy it.
She plants both flowers and vegetables in her garden.
And vegetables are plants that we can eat,
like spinach, kale, and broccoli.
Right. There are many vegetables,
and a lot of them are quite good for us.
Well friends, I think it’s time now to go to Sonia
to learn more about the sentence we just heard.
這裡說:「我喜歡園藝,我在我的園子裡種花也種菜。」
I plant both flowers and vegetables in my garden.
片語 both A and B 表示 A 和 B 兩者都……加入 both 可強調「兩者皆是」的意思。
來看例句:
I like both cooking and baking.
烹飪和烘焙我都喜歡。
或是:
The students saw both their teacher and principal.
學生們見到了他們的老師和校長。
再一句:
Gabe can play both soccer and basketball very well.
Gabe 足球和籃球都很擅長。
Thank you so much, Sonya.
That was both fun to learn about and helpful.
Right, friends, when you want someone to listen carefully to what you’re saying when you’re talking about two things,
you can also use this word both.
That’s right. Well, we continue our conversation and hear from James.
He says a garden is a lot of work.
What do you think, Esther? Is it a lot of work?
I agree.
It is a lot of work.
If you say something is a lot of work,
it means it’s not that easy to do.
Because when you plant a garden,
well, first of all, you need space.
Then you need to prepare many things.
You need to buy seeds and make sure you have good soil, right?
And it takes a lot of time.
You need to put in a lot of work.
You need to care for those plants every day.
Otherwise, they might not live long enough
to have beautiful flowers or tasty vegetables to eat.
That’s correct.
You have to think about many things.
Some plants need a lot of sunlight.
Some plants can’t get too much sunlight.
And different plants need different amounts of water.
When you water the plants, how much sunlight they get—these are things you have to think about.
All right, there’s a lot to learn.
Well, it is a lot of work.
But Julie does think it is fun,
and she likes to watch her plants grow.
Let’s talk some more about this word grow.
Sure. If something grows,
it means it becomes bigger or more mature.
We often talk about growing in children.
You might say, “Wow, you are growing!
You have grown three centimeters this summer!”
Right. And I think that was a good point from Esther.
When something grows,
we’re usually talking about it getting bigger—
like a plant getting higher and higher.
But we might just be talking about someone
getting older and older or more mature, like we just heard.
Right. That means they
know more about what’s happening in the world.
So plants make Julie happy.
And yes, plants make many people happy
because they are beautiful,
and we can eat lots of delicious vegetables.
That’s true.
Well friends, it is time now for a quick break.
Don’t worry, we’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s Talk in English
Let’s Talk in English every day, every day,
That’s the way!
Welcome back, friends!
You know, there’s a fun phrase we want to teach you.
This finger on your hand is called your thumb.
<<<to have a green thumb>>>
<<<to have a green thumb>>>
Garrett, what does it mean when someone has a green thumb?
Well, we have two thumbs.
But when you’re saying someone has a green thumb, it doesn’t mean that those thumbs have become green.
Well, not necessarily.
If someone has a green thumb, they’re really good at taking care of plants, or they really like it, right?
They seem to have a gift for it.
They seem to have a gift for it.
My sister has a green thumb, but I don’t.
How about you?
I don’t either.
I’ve tried to take care of some plants,
but they just kind of died.
Same here.
Friends, let’s continue today’s lesson.
What do you do first in your garden?
First, I get the soil ready. Then I plant seeds.
And after that, you water them, right?
Yes. I water them often.
And I wait about two weeks.
Then little green plants come up.
That’s exciting!
It is. I can watch them grow. I like that.
Well, James wants to ask Julie about gardening,
because Julie does have a beautiful garden.
So he asks, What do you do first in your garden?
Right. He’s asking her if she can give him some tips about gardening.
So Julie says: First, I get the soil ready.
And it sounds like we’re talking about
what to do when you want to plant a plant, right?
There again, we have another word that is both a noun and a verb—or an action.
Right. The word plant.
What you see—the green thing or flower—you see is a plant.
But the action you do—putting that seed in the soil—that’s called plant.
But let’s talk about this word: soil.
It’s that special dirt you use when you plant plants, right?
It really is just dirt,
but when we say it’s soil,
that means it has a lot of good things in it
that are good for that plant and will help it grow.
Soil is often a dark brown color,
but in some places around the world,
it might be special colors like yellow or even red.
Right. And that might be good for the plants.
早些時候我們聽到片語 get the soil ready。
Sonia,你可以幫我們解釋這個片語嗎?
Get something or someone ready(讓某物或某人準備好)
James 問 Julie:「你在園子裡會先做什麼?」
Julie 說:「我先把土壤整理好。」
First I get the soil ready.
動詞 get 表示「使……成為某種狀態」。
Get something ready 就是把某事物準備好。
來看例句:
Now get a pot of hot water ready.
現在去準備好一鍋熱水。
或是:
Mom is getting my lunch ready for school.
媽媽正在準備我上學的午餐。
Megan is getting the kids ready for bed.
Megan 正在幫孩子們準備上床睡覺。
Thank you, Sonia.
Garrett, what’s the next thing Julie does?
Well, then she plants seeds.
Now, a seed is kind of like a baby plant.
It is very small, usually.
Sometimes we even eat seeds, right?
Like pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
But sometimes you plant many seeds,
but they don’t all grow.
So you have to plant a few more seeds
and see which ones will actually grow.
Yeah, seeds don’t look like a full plant,
but if you plant them, or put them in that soil
and take care of them,
they will slowly grow up into a plant, right?
And then James asks if the next thing you do
after you plant the seeds is to water them.
If you water seeds, it means you put water on the seeds.
Again, we have another word that’s both a thing and an action.
Of course, we know what water is — we drink it to stay alive.
Well, plants also need to drink water,
and when we give them that water, we are watering them, right?
And Julie tells James that she waters these seeds often.
If you do something often, it means you do it quite a lot.
And she will wait about two weeks — that’s about fourteen days.
So wait about two weeks — that’s because
for those two weeks,
you probably won’t see anything coming out of the soil.
But if you watched our conversation,
you will find the answer to our Find It question.
Our question was: What comes up after about two weeks?
The answer is: Little green plants come up after about two weeks.
Right. You need to be patient.
If you’re patient and wait,
then after about two weeks, these seeds will grow,
and you will see small green plants.
Yeah, little green plants will come up, and you can watch them grow.
Julie likes that a lot, and James thinks that it is exciting.
It sure is fun to watch things grow.
Yes, it is.
Now friends, we learned a lot in our lesson today.
It’s time to review our keywords.
Here’s our first keyword:
Garden
Gardening is a lot of fun.
Vegetable
Spinach is a delicious vegetable.
Seeds
Plant these seeds in your garden.
Water
Dad is watering the plants.
Grow
What is growing in your garden?
Friends, those are today’s keywords.
You’re doing a great job!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are: garden, vegetable, seeds, water, and grow.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
Cucumbers are my favorite.
Correct! Cucumbers are my favorite vegetable.
Next:
Lisa loves to…
She likes to plant flowers — roses and lilies and…
You got it! Lisa loves to garden.
Next:
My mom… many kinds of flowers.
The answer is not "water."
Great job!
My mom grows many kinds of flowers.
Next:
Those are very small.
You need a noun here.
That’s correct! Those seeds are very small.
Last one:
You can… the grass now.
That’s right! You can water the grass now.
And you can come back tomorrow for your turn!
What do you do first in your garden?
First I get the soil ready. Then I plant seeds.
And after that, you water them, right?
Yes, I water them often.
And I wait about two weeks.
Then little green plants come up.
That’s exciting!
It is. I can watch them grow. I like that.
One, two, let’s review!
Hey David, look!
I have a seed here.
“Seed”? Yeah.
Do you like gardening?
Well, not really. I’m not very good at it.
Some people enjoy gardening.
You can grow flowers or vegetables.
I know. But gardening is a lot of work and takes a lot of time.
True.
You have to get the soil ready,
then plant the seeds and water them and wait,
and wait, and wait.
After waiting about two weeks,
the little green plants start to grow.
I know! And that’s exciting — watching them grow.
True. But it’s a lot of work, and it takes a lot of time.
But it’s fun.
Yeah, I can’t wait—what?
Oh hi, I’m Detective Carter.
I have a problem.
I have some items, and I need to find one that is different.
Can you help me find the odd one out?
There are four words.
We need to pick the one that is not the same.
Are you ready?
We have: gardening, water, banana, and grow.
Interesting! These words are about what happens in a garden.
But which one is a little different?
That’s right — banana is different!
Gardening, watering, and growing happen when you have plants in a garden.
A banana is a fruit. A banana can come from a garden,
but it is a thing, not an action.
Banana is the odd word out.
Here’s our next set: banana, vegetable, seed, and chili.
Hey, you can find these in the garden,
but one word is not the same. Which one is it?
The answer is seed.
Bananas, vegetables, and chilies are fruits and vegetables.
They all start as seeds,
and they grow into fruit or vegetable plants.
A seed is different.
Good work! You helped me find the odd one out.
See you next time, friends!
And today Julie has given us some tips and steps
on how we can have our own garden.
Right. You follow these steps
and hopefully have a beautiful flower
or delicious vegetables to eat.
Right. And make sure you buy good soil.
If your soil is good,
then your seed is more likely to grow.
Right. You might have good soil at home already,
but if you don’t,
there are many stores that can sell it to you.
You can ask a friend, like how James asked Julie,
who has a garden, and ask them where they
buy their soil and seeds.
I’m sure they’ll be happy to help you out.
Well friends, we hope to see you again tomorrow.
That’s right, here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!

Hello everyone!
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today, our topic is activity, and our title is Gardening is Fun.
We started talking about this fun activity yesterday.
Right — a garden is a place where plants grow.
Some people have their own garden, so they need to plant those plants.
And what you do is called gardening.
Yeah, we talked about many words like this yesterday — words that are both a thing and something you do, like the word plant.
A plant is something that’s alive, like a flower or a vegetable, right?
And vegetables are plants that we eat — like spinach and broccoli.
We also use the word water this way too.
We can drink water, but when you add water to your plants, what you’re doing is also called watering your plants.
So when youre gardening, plant your plants in the ground, then water them with water.
Got it, friends? Right!
And then you will be happy when you see your plants grow.
But remember — plants start off as seeds.
Those little tiny parts of the plant are like baby plants.
Yeah, they don’t look like much, but if you take good care of them, they will slowly grow into a beautiful plant.
Well friends, we have a Find It question for you today.
We hope you can find the answer, and it’s about our friend Sarah.
Listen carefully. The question is:
What is Sarah growing in her garden?
What is Sarah growing in her garden?
Friends, I’m sure you can find the answer in today’s lesson.
Now let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
Sara在一家花卉園藝店碰到了Greg。
他有點驚訝,他說:「我沒想到會在園藝店遇到你。」
I’m surprised to see you here at the garden center.
形容詞 surprised 就是「感到驚訝的、意外的」。
Greg說他對園藝並不擅長,他園子裡的雜草長得比其他植物都茂盛呢。
The weeds in my garden grow better than anything else.
名詞 weed 是「雜草」。
Sara說她需要買可以除蟲的產品。
I need a product to stop the bugs.
名詞 bug 就是「小蟲子」。
Sarah今年只種了生菜和番茄。
Just lettuce and tomatoes this year.
名詞 tomato 就是「番茄」。
對於園藝的難題或疑問,到這裡來,一定有人能夠為你提供一些建議:
Someone here can give you some advice.
名詞 advice 是「建議」。
Hi Greg.
I’m surprised to see you here at the garden center.
You are? Why?
I like gardening.
I didn’t know that! So you have a green thumb?
Not really.
The weeds in my garden grow better than anything else.
They grow better in mine too!
So I’m here to buy a product to stop the weeds.
I need a product to stop the bugs too.
They’re eating my vegetables!
Today, Sarah and Greg are at the garden center.
A garden center is a place where you can buy things that have to do with gardening.
All right — it’s kind of like a big garden store.
Garden centers are often really big and have all sorts of things — from decorations to useful tools.
Right! They sell many seeds, many small plants.
Sometimes they even sell small trees — like Christmas trees during the winter as well.
That’s a good point!
Well, we heard the word surprised in that sentence.
Sarah is surprised to see Greg.
When you’re surprised, you feel a little scared or excited because you see something you don’t expect.
Right — sometimes when you feel surprised, you might go like this: 😲
Or if someone surprises you, they do something you don’t think will happen.
Then you might feel nervous or happy.
So surprise can be an adjective or a verb.
Exactly! And listen carefully — we don’t always say that first "r," so it might sound like suprised.
All right — well, Greg is wondering why Sarah is surprised, because actually, he likes gardening — and Sarah did not know that.
So Sarah says, “You have a green thumb.”
Friends, do you remember this phrase green thumb from yesterday?
Remember, you can say, “Hey, you look like you have a green thumb!”
This means you’re talking to someone who’s good at gardening or likes it a lot.
Right — well, Greg enjoys gardening, but he doesn’t think he really has a green thumb.
He says, “The weeds in my garden grow better than anything else.”
Garrett, what are weeds?
They are things you don’t want.
They are plants, and they will grow in your garden, but you didn’t put them there — you didn’t plant them.
And they often grow quite quickly, right?
They are like the bad plants that you don’t want.
They’re not what you planted.
Sonia, can you help us with that sentence?
Sara說:「原來你是園藝高手!」
Greg回答:「算不上高手了,我院子裡的雜草長得比其他植物都還要茂盛。」
The weeds in my garden grow better than anything else.
片語 better than anything else 用來強調是最好的、最強的。來看例句:
I like hiking better than anything else.
比起任何其他活動,我最喜歡的就是登山。
或是:
The children want to eat pizza more than anything else.
比起其他任何食物,孩子們最想吃的就是披薩。
再一句:
Andy hates P.E. more than anything else.
比起其他任何課,Andy 最討厭的就是體育課。
Thank you, Sonia!
Yes, the weeds grow best in Greg’s garden.
That’s why he’s at the garden center.
He’s there to buy a product or something to stop the weeds from growing.
Yeah — a product is something you buy.
You go to a store to buy products.
He wants to buy one to stop the weeds.
Sometimes you can buy things to spray that will kill off weeds.
Or there are other ways to stop them too.
And Sara is there because she needs to buy a product to stop the bugs.
Bugs are insects — like mosquitoes or other insects that are often in gardens.
And they might eat the plants, right?
We often don’t like bugs.
They are not fun to be around.
They often fly around and bother us — and they bother our plants too.
And these bugs are eating Sarah’s vegetables — that’s why she wants to buy something to stop the bugs from bothering her vegetables.
That is a good idea!
All right, friends, we’ve learned a lot so far.
Now it’s time for a quick break.
We’ll be right back just after this.
🎵 Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English
🎵 Every day, every day — that’s the way!
Welcome back!
Friends, you know, not all garden bugs are bad bugs.
But the bad bugs have a special name. We call them pests — P-E-S-T.
(pest KK[pɛst] DJ[pest] n.有害的動物,害蟲;有害的植物)
Yeah, pests are things that bother you or damage things you have.
Not just bugs — other animals could be pests too, right?
If someone has a younger brother or sister who is always breaking their things, then they might say:
“Hey, stop being a pest! You are bothering me.”
Or: “Stop pestering me!”
All right friends, it’s time to get back to our conversation now.
What kind of vegetables are you growing?
Just lettuce and tomatoes this year.
There is nothing better than tomatoes right from the garden.
I know, but bugs are eating the leaves of my tomato plants.
That’s not good.
I need to stop them quickly or they will kill the plants.
And then you won’t get any tomatoes.
Well, someone here can give you some advice.
I hope so.
Greg is curious about Sarah’s garden. He asks:
What kind of vegetables are you growing?
What kind of vegetables — of course, in your garden, you can’t grow every kind of vegetable.
There’s not enough space. So people need to choose what things they will grow.
And Sarah’s not just growing one vegetable.
We learn that Sarah’s growing two different kinds of vegetables.
So that leads us to today’s Climb It question:
What is Sarah growing in her garden?
She’s growing lettuce and tomatoes.
And she says: “Just lettuce and tomatoes this year.”
Now, tomatoes are a very popular garden plant.
Many people grow tomatoes.
Tomatoes are actually a fruit.
They’re usually red and they have seeds inside.
Exactly.
Now, if you call them a vegetable, that’s not a big deal.
Many people do, because we use them like vegetables — by putting them in all kinds of dishes, in meals, or even in salads, right?
And many people use tomatoes to make that red sauce in pasta.
It’s very tasty.
Well, Greg continues and says:
There is nothing better than tomatoes right from the garden.
Yes! Fresh tomatoes from your own garden do taste very good, right?
They’re often sweeter, and they’re firm and juicy as well.
This phrase, nothing is better than, means what you talked about previously is the best.
Sonia, can you help us?
小冉說今年只有種生菜和番茄。
Greg回答:「嗯,沒有什麼比從菜園裡直接摘下來的番茄更好了。」
Hmm, there is nothing better than tomatoes right from the garden.
比起直接說
Tomatoes right from the garden are the best.
句型 There is nothing better than + something 更能夠強調某事物的優異性。
來看例句:
There is nothing better than a glass of milk in the morning.
沒有什麼比早晨來一杯牛奶更好了。
或是:
There is nothing better than a walk in the park after work.
沒有什麼比下班後在公園散步更好了。
這一句:
There is nothing better than spending time with friends and family.
沒有什麼比和朋友家人共度時光更好了。
Thank you, Sonia.
Sara agrees with Greg — eating fresh tomatoes is the best.
But she has a problem.
What’s her problem?
Well, we hear that bugs are eating the leaves of her tomato plants.
Now, of course, we don’t eat the leaves of our tomato plants,
but if those plants don’t have leaves, they can’t keep growing, right?
And then tomatoes will not grow well either.
Well, Greg says: That’s not good.
And that’s not good is today’s calendar phrase.
That’s not good.
That’s not good.
這樣可不好。
— Hey, tell me about your garden.
— Well, the rabbits are eating my carrots.
— Oh, that’s not good.
— And the birds are eating my corn.
— That’s not good.
— And the deer ate all my tomatoes.
— That’s not good.
— It’s not good for my garden, but it’s good for the animals.
— Oh, that’s good.
That’s not good.
That’s not good.
這樣可不好。
Sarah tells us that she needs to stop them quickly —
stop these bugs from eating those leaves quickly.
Or these bugs will kill the plants.
Yeah, those bugs are hungry and will keep on eating.
And Greg reminds her:
Then you won’t get any tomatoes.
And he says:
Someone here at the garden center can give you some advice.
That’s good to hear — and Greg is right!
Advice is tips or information that will help you.
Because at the garden center, the people who work there
know a lot about gardening and plants, right?
Whenever you’re learning something,
you might want some advice or information to know how to do it better.
If you want advice for learning English —
just keep watching our show every day, right?
And we sure hope that Sarah will get the advice she needs
about buying a product that will stop those bugs
from eating her tomato plants.
I agree.
Well friends, it’s time now for us to review our key words.
Here is our first key word:
Surprised
When he saw me, he was surprised.
Weed
There are too many weeds in the garden.
Bug
Amy is scared of bugs.
Tomato
He ate some tomatoes at lunch.
Advice
Can you give me some advice?
Friends, those are today’s key words. Keep practicing.
And now it’s your turn!
Today’s words are:
surprised, weeds, bugs, tomato, and advice.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence!
First one:
Her mom is ______ in the garden.
You don’t want this in your garden.
— That’s correct! Her mom is pulling weeds in the garden.
Next:
Jim listened to the teacher’s ______.
— You got it! Jim listened to the teacher’s advice.
Next:
She was ______ when she got the gift.
— Correct! She was surprised when she got the gift.
Next:
This ______ tastes really good. It is round and red.
— Good answer! This tomato tastes really good.
Last one:
Did you kill all the ______?
— Great job! Did you kill all the bugs?
And did you guess all the words correctly?
Great job! I’ll see you tomorrow for Your Turn!
Hi Greg.
I’m surprised to see you here at the garden center.
— You are? Why?
— I like gardening.
— I didn’t know that! So you have a green thumb?
— Not really. The weeds in my garden grow better than anything else.
— They grow better in mine too!
— So I’m here to buy a product to stop the weeds.
— I need a product to stop the bugs too. They’re eating my vegetables.
— What kind of vegetables are you growing?
— Just lettuce and tomatoes this year.
— There is nothing better than tomatoes right from the garden.
— I know, but bugs are eating the leaves of my tomato plants.
— That’s not good. I need to stop them quickly, or they will kill the plants.
— And then you won’t get any tomatoes.
— Well, someone here can give you some advice.
— I hope so.
Let’s review.
Look what I have!
It’s a flower!
— Yeah, that’s right! I planted a seed and now I have a flower.
— I’m so surprised.
— It’s beautiful!
— You have a green thumb.
— Well, that’s for sure. But the weeds in my garden are growing so well.
— Oh no! How can you stop the weeds?
— I’ll buy a product from the garden center.
— I need something to stop the bugs too. They’re eating all my vegetables.
— What kind of vegetables?
— Lettuce and tomatoes.
— Tomatoes! I love tomatoes!
— So do the bugs. They’re eating the leaves from the tomato plants.
— That’s not good.
— Stop them quickly! Don’t let them kill the plants.
— Don’t worry. I’ll ask someone at the garden center for advice.
— Good idea! They can give you advice — and you can give me some tomatoes.
— Sounds good.
— Just grow flowers. That might be easier.
All right, friends, it’s time now for us to ask some questions and answer them to see if we remember today’s lesson.
Here’s our first question:
What grows the best in Greg’s garden?
We found the answer in Conversation A:
The weeds grow the best.
Next question:
If you had a garden, what would you grow?
Let’s go to our friends and hear their answers:
— If I had a garden, what would I plant?
Well, I like flowers, so I’ll plant lots of flowers instead of vegetables.
Flowers like sunflowers — those are my favorite.
Maybe I’ll plant some roses as well. They are pretty.
— What about you?
If I had a garden, what would I grow?
I would grow tomatoes because they’re not hard to grow.
They’re pretty easy, and you can get a lot of tomatoes.
Tomatoes are good for you — you can use them in salads and sandwiches, and they taste so good.
The deer think they taste good too — so I hope they don’t eat all my tomatoes!
— If I had a garden, what would I grow?
Hmm... I think I would like to grow some fruits or vegetables in the garden.
I think it would be fun to grow some watermelon or potatoes.
And maybe I will plant some flowers for my wife too — haha!
— If I had a garden, what would I grow?
Friends, you know I like to travel around the world, so if I had a garden,
I would grow herbs — like basil I can put in pizza and pasta,
peppermint I can put in tea, and rosemary I can add to different meats.
— Grandpa, if you had a garden, what would you grow?
— Oh, if I had a garden, I’d grow vegetables. I’d also grow fruit.
And I might grow flowers — I love flowers.
But mostly I’d grow tired!
It’s not easy planting in the garden.
— No, it’s not!
Those were some great answers!
Friends, what would you grow?
Would you grow tomatoes and lettuce — or chili peppers?
That’s a good idea.
I think I would grow some chili peppers and some herbs like basil.
Well friends, we hope to see you again tomorrow right here on Let’s Talk in English!
Goodbye!
