hello friends
welcome to Let’s Talk in English
My name is Esther, and my name is Garrett. Today,
we have our talk about its story, and our story is called
"Oops, I Broke It!" "Oops, I Broke It!"
You say "oops" when you do something wrong by accident, right?
And you’re kind of letting people
know that you made a mistake.
And your story is about it exactly.
Especially if you break something and it’s not yours,
you’ll definitely say "oops."
Right, things that can get broken
sometimes can’t be fixed. For example,
if you have a vase and you break it,
you might not be able to fix it.
A vase is one of those things you put flowers in.
Well, it sounds like someone
will break something in our story today,
but hopefully, things will be all right. We’ll see.
And now, let’s go to our Find It question.
Our question is: Who are Wesley and Annie helping?
Who are Wesley and Annie helping?
Friends, you’ll find the answer in our lesson today.
Now, let’s go to Sonia for today’s keywords.
Her house is too big, so she is moving to a smaller place.
Kevin
Come with me to the kitchen.
Kevin
Kevin points to some boxes.
It falls on the floor and breaks.
It’s my fault.
Wesley likes to help others. Today,
he, Annie, and Kevin are helping Kevin’s grandmother move.
Her house is too big,
so she is moving to a smaller place.
"Thank you so much for helping my grandmother.
She really appreciates it, and so do I."
"We’re glad to help. What should we do first?"
"You can help pack things. Come with me to the kitchen."
So we meet some of our characters here.
Wesley is someone who likes to help others, right?
If you like to help others,
you like to make other people feel happy.
Maybe you hold things for them, or you do things for them.
Well friends, who is
Wesley helping today?
That gets us to our Find It answer:
Who are Wesley and Annie helping?
They are helping Kevin’s grandmother.
So we’re going to hear
about a grandmother. And this is Kevin’s grandmother, right?
So the three of them are helping Kevin’s grandmother
move—move to a different house.
Her house is too big,
so she’s moving to a smaller place.
Right friends, did you hear the word "smaller"?
If something is "small",
it’s not very big.
But the word "smaller" means we’re going to compare
two things—one thing will be
even more small than the other thing—it’s even smaller.
Exactly. So a small place can’t fit as much stuff.
Kevin says:
"Thank you so much for helping my grandmother.
She really appreciates it, and so do I."
And this is a good word to learn: appreciate.
If you appreciate someone,
it means you are thankful for them.
So Kevin’s grandmother is thankful
for Wesley and Annie, and so is Kevin.
Now we hear that Wesley is wondering what they can do first—
what they can help out with first.
Kevin says they can help pack things.
So he wants them to go with him to the kitchen.
The kitchen is a place where we cook food.
A kitchen is one room that most people have in their house.
Yes, it’s where you make food.
You might put food there, and also things like bowls,
plates, and cups.
Well, they’re going to start packing.
We’re going to watch the next part—
in the kitchen.
Kevin points to some boxes:
"Pack Grandma’s cups into these boxes.
Wrap them in this newspaper so they don’t break."
"Okay, that will be easy."
"Be sure to pack the cups carefully.
Grandma loves them, and some are very old."
Kevin leads.
Annie and Wesley begin to take the cups from the cupboard
and wrap them in newspaper.
Well, they get to the kitchen and
Kevin is showing them what they can do, right?
And he points to some boxes. If you point at
something, you are using your finger
or something else to show people
what you want them to look at.
And it’s boxes.
Boxes are big rectangles or squares that you put things
into, especially when you’re moving.
Now let’s go to Sonia for more on pointing to things.
In the kitchen, Kevin points to some boxes."
除了本句中的 point to,常見的還有 point at。
He pointed to the bird in the sky.
The sign is pointing to the left.
Sammy pointed at the spider on the wall.
Sammy
She is pointing at the cake she wants.
Thank you, Sonia. All right, so what does Kevin want them to do?
He wants them to pack—or put away—Grandma’s cups
into these boxes, the ones he is pointing to.
"Wrap them in this newspaper so they don’t break," he says.
I often do that when I’ve had to move—
put things that break easily inside of paper or clothing
so they don’t break easily.
And Wesley and Annie say,
"Okay, that will be easy."
"Sure!"
"Be sure to pack the cups carefully," Kevin reminds them.
These are glass cups that could break quite easily,
and Kevin’s grandmother loves them.
Some of these cups are very old—
Grandma has had these cups for a long time.
It sounds like it. So,
Annie and Wesley begin to take the cups from the cupboard
and wrap them in newspaper.
When you wrap something,
you put it in that thing and move it
so it covers the whole outside, right?
We call that the wrapping as well.
And where do they take it from?
They take it from a cupboard.
This is a place in the kitchen where you
keep things or store things—not just cups.
And you might see that word "cup" in the word "cupboard",
but we pronounce it "cupboard" without the "p" sound.
Right—plates, pots, and pans can all be stored in the cupboard.
Now it’s time for us to take a break.
Don’t go away—we’ll be right back after this!
Let’s Talk in English! Let’s Talk in English!
That’s the way!
Welcome back to the show, everyone.
Moving to a new house is not easy.
It’s always nice when people are there to help out, right?
Because packing is hard work,
and it takes a long time to pack right.
But when you let other people help,
things can go a little wrong at times.
Let’s see what happens next.
Wesley reaches for another cup.
As he takes it from the cupboard, it slips from his hand.
It falls on the floor and breaks.
"Oh no! I broke one of Grandma’s cups!"
"Don’t worry. We can just wrap the pieces in newspaper
and put them in the box. No one will know when it broke."
"But it’s my fault. I dropped the cup."
What should Wesley do?
Wesley should tell Kevin about the cup.
Wesley should just pack the pieces in the box.
Your choice. What would you do?
So, Wesley reaches for another cup—remember,
they’re packing Grandma’s glass cups, right?
And these cups are in the cupboard.
Now, as he is taking this cup from the cupboard,
something bad happens: it slips from his hand.
If something slips from your hand,
it kind of moves out of it really smoothly
and falls to whatever is below, right?
And this cup falls on the floor—
the place on the bottom where we stand—
and this cup breaks. Yes,
the cup breaks into a thousand different pieces—
or a lot, I don’t know the number.
And well, I’m sure Grandma will be sad about this.
Now let’s go to Sonia for ways to use these two words: fall and feel.
It falls on the floor and breaks.
In October, the leaves start falling from the trees.
She fell off her bike and hurt her knee.
Do you feel cold? I can turn down the AC.
The students felt tired after a long day of school.
Thank you, Sonia.
Wesley says, "Oh no! I broke one of Grandma’s cups!"
"Oh no" is right—or you might say "Oops!"
He made a mistake.
But Annie doesn’t seem to be quite so worried about it, right?
She says, "Don’t worry."
If you want someone to stop thinking about something
that they keep thinking about,
you can tell them, "Don’t worry."
Well, Annie has an idea.
She says, "We can just wrap the pieces in newspaper
and put them in the box.
No one will know when it broke."
Right—this means no person.
So Grandma’s not gonna know.
Kevin’s not gonna know.
Grandma’s family members will not know
when this cup broke.
They won’t know if these two friends broke the cup
or if it broke later when they were moving the box.
No one will know.
And that’s today’s calendar phrase:
No one will know.
No one will know.
No one will know.
Uh-oh! Was that the boss’s favorite cup?
Yes, I broke it.
"Don’t worry. No one will know.
It fell off the desk."
"Don’t worry. No one will know."
"But it’s my fault. I broke it."
"Don’t worry. No one will know."
Hey, where’s my favorite cup?"
"Dim Smith broke it."
"Oh no, now everyone will know! Why did you tell?"
"Sorry."
No one will know.
No one will know.
Wesley says, "But it’s my fault.
Wesley says, "But it’s my fault.
I dropped the cup."
He knows that he’s the one that made the cup break.
Yes—he says, "I dropped the cup."
If something is your fault,
then you did it. It’s your responsibility.
And friends, it’s all of our responsibility
to review our keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
small
My parents drive a small car.
kitchen
Mom is cooking in the kitchen.
box
Can you put these books in a box?
floor
We can sit on the floor.
fault
Don’t worry, it’s not your fault.
Friends, those are today’s keywords.
You’re doing a great job!
And now it’s your turn!
The keywords for today are:
small, kitchen, box, floor, and fault.
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence:
First one:
Did she buy a ___ of cookies? I hope so.
Did she buy a box of cookies?
Next:
The accident was Phil’s.
Phil caused the accident, so the accident was Phil’s fault.
Next:
Jenny has ___ hands. They’re not big, they’re...
Correct! Jenny has small hands.
Next:
Can you clean up the dirt on the ___?
You’re right! Can you clean up the dirt on the floor?
Last one:
We can get some food from the ___
Good job! We can get some food from the kitchen.
And we can meet here again at Your Turn!
Wesley likes to help others.

What should Wesley do?
One, two—let’s review!
David, do you like helping others?
Sure! Helping others is a good thing.
I agree. But sometimes, when you’re helping—oh!
Things go wrong.
You’re right, and that’s what happened in today’s lesson.
Friends were helping a grandmother move.
She was moving to a smaller place,
and they were helping her pack.
They were taking cups from the cupboard
and wrapping them in newspaper.
Yeah... and I just broke one.
Yeah, one of Grandma’s favorite cups.
It slipped out of my hand.
Don’t worry—just wrap the pieces back in the newspaper
and put them in a box.
But no one will ever know.
But it’s my fault.
True.
Sometimes, things go wrong when you try to help others.
When things go wrong, what would you do?
Well Esther, with some of our stories,
I think it can be hard to decide
what the characters should do—what’s the right decision.
But I think we’ll agree on this one.
I think so as well.
We both believe that Wesley should tell Kevin about the cup.
Because it means a lot to Kevin’s grandmother.
Wesley should be honest.
Yeah, you should be honest when you make a mistake.
But I will say—
packing those pieces up and hiding them in the box
is the kind of thing I’ve done before in my life.
And I’m sure many of you have as well.
We feel bad when something is our fault,
and we want to hide it, right?
But somehow, they will find out that cup is broken,
and they will feel bad about it.
So, if they tell Grandma that it wasn’t something
they did on purpose,
I believe Grandma would understand—hopefully.
Well friends, hopefully you learned something from our lesson.
And we hope to see you again tomorrow
right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
