Hello, I’m Ann Marie, and today is a great day to learn something new.
So let’s do that together. I’m David.
Welcome to the program, and welcome to Studio Classroom, friends.
As you see, we have Dave here with us for our lesson today.
He’ll be joining us for many of our lessons this month.
And we have a very exciting topic today.
We’re going to be talking about toys—one toy in particular.
We’ll get to that in a moment. But first,
I have a question for you, Dave.
All right, what’s your question?
My question is: Have you noticed any toys out there
recently that have started to make a comeback
from when you were a child?
I can’t think of any specific toys, but I can say that
I was very into
Pokémon when I was in middle school and elementary school.
And I don’t know if I can call it a comeback—
it’s like it never left. It just got bigger and bigger,
and now kids nowadays are still playing Pokémon games.
Yeah, that’s a good point.
I’ve noticed that a specific toy
I played with when I was little—
Polly Pocket—is starting to make a comeback now too.
And there’s another one.
We’re going to be talking all about Tamagotchi in our lesson
today. So let’s get right into our first reading.
Tamagotchi
This virtual pet game is making a return.
Before smartphones, there was one device that kids loved:
the Tamagotchi.
This digital pet fit right in your pocket,
but it demanded a considerable amount of care—
just like a real animal.
Welcome to Language Lab, I’m Jack.
我們先來看 "digital" 這個形容詞。它的意思是「數位的」。
譬如:
Doing business globally has become more convenient and efficient using digital signatures.
使用數位簽名讓全球商務變得更加便捷。
或者是:
Would you prefer me to send these digital images to you using Airdrop or Dropbox?
你希望我用 Airdrop 還是 Dropbox 傳送這些數位圖片給你?
"Digital" 的名詞是 "digit",意思是「數字」。
例如:
It is common in many countries for phone numbers to be ten digits long.
在許多國家,電話號碼通常是 10 位數字的長度。
Alright, thank you so much, Jack. Friends, are you ready to learn all
about Tamagotchi?
I know I am. Well,
we see here in our lesson:
“This virtual pet game is making a return.”
Now, there are a few things we want to take a look at here,
and the first thing is this word—
"virtual." Now, what does virtual mean? Well,
virtual means that something doesn’t physically exist,
but it might appear to exist
through some kind of computer software.
That’s right. For example,
you could say: “I took a virtual tour of a museum
using a special website.”
That’s right. And now we see here that this is a virtual pet
game. So this is a game that exists
online or on a computer.
But there’s another phrase that we want to take a look at—
that’s the phrase “to make a return.” Dave, what does that mean?
Well, if you make something,
it means that you’re performing or achieving something—
in this case, a return.
Coming back—maybe something was very popular,
then it fell out of popularity,
but now it is
making a return. It has successfully become popular again.
That’s right. Here’s an example:
“After taking a break from singing for five years,
she made a return to performing.”
So already,
we see here that there’s this toy that was popular before,
but now it’s happening again—
now it’s making a return
or making a comeback—becoming popular again. Before
smartphones,
there was one device that kids loved. We see in our reading—
it was the Tamagotchi.
This digital pet fit right in your pocket,
but it demanded a considerable amount of care—
just like a real animal. We have a few
words in that paragraph there.
That’s right. So we want to talk about this word “device.”
A lot of times we hear people talking about devices like:
“What kind of device
do you have?” or “Go ahead and get out your device.”
But what is the definition? Well,
it’s a piece of electronic equipment,
and specifically, this piece of equipment
has the ability to connect to the internet.
What are some types of devices that people might have?
One device you might be familiar with is a hearing aid—
for your grandfather who has trouble hearing.
Maybe he uses a hearing aid,
which is a device that
helps someone who has trouble hearing
to experience the world and be more independent.
Okay, so there are different kinds of devices. Now,
this little device that we’re talking about here is
a little toy. Now,
have you seen
these Tamagotchis before, Dave?
I saw the ones that I used when I was a kid,
when I was in middle school.
But the Tamagotchis they have now
are much more powerful. Although,
there’s one thing that’s the same—
they still demand a considerable amount of care
to take care of, because these Tamagotchis are not just
toys that you play games on.
They’re actual
virtual pets that you take care of,
like a real animal.
Now, what does that word “considerable” mean?
Something is “considerably” something—
it just means that it’s large in
size or amount, or important.
So it just means that these take a very
large amount of care.
For example,
“There is still a considerable amount of work to be done.”
Alright, friends,
we have more to learn about Tamagotchi in just a moment.
But first, let’s go to our next reading.
Tamagotchi
I met my first Tamagotchi in high school.
A classmate brought one to school and called it her pet.
I thought it was a strange idea and wouldn’t last long,
but soon Tamagotchis were all over the place.
Then, just as suddenly as they appeared, they disappeared.
Now, thanks to '90s nostalgia,
Tamagotchis are making a big comeback.
The latest Tamagotchi,
called the Tamagotchi Uni,
combines old-school charm with Wi-Fi,
global connections, and even a Tamagotchi-verse.
今天的 Usage Tip 要來看 latest、last、least 這三個字。
它們非常相似,所以很容易混淆。
latest 是指時間上最新的,
譬如:
"the latest news"(最新消息)。
last 也可以當形容詞用,是指順序上最後的,
例如:"the last train"(最後一班火車),
或是「上一次的」,例如:"last night"(昨晚)。
least,它是 little 的最高級,表示「最不怎麼樣」或者「最小的某事」,經常跟形容詞或動詞搭配使用,
例如:"the least interesting novel"(最無趣的小說),
或者是:"the flavor I like the least"(我最不喜歡的口味)。
來看一個例句:
"The company’s latest report suggests that the last campaign was the least effective."
(該公司的最新報告顯示,上次的宣傳活動效果最差。)
Okay, thank you so much, Jack.
And now, friends, we’re going to hear a little bit
about our writer’s experience.
Our writer, Campbell, says, “I met my first Tamagotchi in high school.”
So this is something that he has seen before.
How does our lesson continue, Dave?
Well, he says that a classmate brought one to school and called it her pet.
I thought that’s kind of cute, you know? First of all, in the first sentence,
he says that he met his first Tamagotchi,
which makes it sound like a person, not a device. And then,
his classmate brought one to school and called it her pet.
This device is something that people treat like a living thing, you know.
Kids will treat a lot of different things like a pet—
like maybe a stuffed animal or...
Have you ever met someone who’s had a pet rock before?
I think I had a pet rock, actually.
Very interesting.
Lots of different things could be our pets.
But we see here that our writer thought it was a strange idea
and wouldn’t last long.
So he thinks this is some kind of passing fad
or something that’s not going to last.
But soon, Tamagotchis were all over the place.
This just means that they were everywhere.
That’s right. For example, you could also say,
“Oh, I spilled my bowl of ramen noodles, and now
there’s soup all over the place.”
Oh, that doesn’t sound good!
“To be all over the place” is a good phrase for you to remember, friends.
But we see here, just as suddenly as these Tamagotchis appeared,
they disappeared.
Now, thanks to ‘90s nostalgia...
Let’s stop there right now.
You may remember, friends, that we talked about nostalgia
quite a bit last month.
But let’s review for a minute.
Nostalgia is a very special word.
It sort of means an emotional memory about something from the past.
Exactly. So, for example,
you might watch a certain TV show from when you were growing up,
and it brings back a lot of nostalgia.
You feel very happy when you watch it.
And as you might remember, friends,
we talked about the idea of nostalgia
as being a bittersweet feeling.
You kind of miss that time before.
And since Tamagotchis were from a time before,
they are bringing back nostalgia for a lot of people.
That’s right. I really like the next phrase we have in this sentence—
“making a big comeback.”
I thought about this, actually,
when the video game company Nintendo...
Whenever they release a new video game console or system,
they always release a Super Mario game.
And every time, Super Mario makes a big comeback on
T-shirts and keychains and all kinds of things,
because people just love that character.
And this is a great phrase for you to know, friends,
because when you make a comeback,
you could be coming back to success—
after retirement or after a failure as well.
So in Nintendo’s case,
it’s kind of like this console was in retirement.
It came back and made a big comeback—it’s popular again!
But how does our lesson continue?
Well, this is not...
We’re not just talking about the old Tamagotchis making a comeback.
We’re talking about the company making a new product.
We see here that the latest Tamagotchi,
called the Tamagotchi Uni,
combines old-school charm with Wi-Fi,
global connections, and even a Tama-verse.
That sounds like something that exists online or on a computer, friends.
And we see that phrase “old-school charm” that we want to talk about.
How would we define that?
This is a very sweet word. If something has old-school charm,
it means that while it may be more traditional or something from the past,
it’s still appealing to a modern audience. For example,
records are a great example of something that has old-school charm.
Records are not a modern way of listening to music,
but people still buy them—
new ones—and spend a lot of money on them.
Here’s another example of how you could use “old-school charm” in a sentence:
“I like that quaint little town with its old-school charm.”
Alright, friends, we’ll be right back after today’s Info Cloud.
Hello, friends! Welcome to Info Cloud. Hey Rex,
have you ever heard the saying, “The more things change,
the more they stay the same”?
Yes, I have.
It’s a very interesting expression.
It means that even though things are always changing,
some things remain constant.
That’s right. Over time, circumstances,
technologies, and relationships can change a lot.
But some patterns, behaviors, and traditions do seem to persist.
Technology is a good example.
There are new versions of smartphones every year,
and each version brings new gadgets and features.
But despite those changes, the fundamental ways
we use smartphones to communicate
and entertain ourselves remain the same.
Another example is fashion.
Styles and trends evolve, but the basic human desire to express individuality through clothing stays the same.
The expression “The more things change, the more they stay the same” can apply to many aspects of life, from personal habits to societal trends.
Yes, and it reminds us that while change is inevitable, there are truths and principles that remain the same for long periods of time.

The more things change, the more they remain constant.
今天要分享一句很有趣的諺語:
The more things change, the more they remain constant.(越是改變,越是保持不變)
意思就是儘管環境和情況在改變,有些模式或原則卻沒有任何改變。
例如科技業每年都推出創新的產品,但我們使用它們的目的——交流和娛樂,卻沒有改變。
還有時尚界的風格和潮流快速演變,這些都是基於人們透過服裝表達個性的基本需求。
“The more things change, the more they remain constant.”
雖然聽起來有點矛盾,但卻有它的道理。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud,下次雲端見!

Tamagotchi
The name Tamagotchi comes from the Japanese word “tamago” (egg) and “chi,”
the second half of the Japanese pronunciation of “watch.”
It taught kids to care for a living pet and created lasting memories.
Now, my generation is remembering our youth and sharing the fun with our kids and grandkids.
Tamagotchis are proof that while trends come and go, they often come back again.
接下來看 "pronunciation" 這個名詞,它的意思就是「發音」。
來看例句:
"To improve your speech contest score, ensure correct pronunciation of every word."
(為了提高演講比賽的分數,必須確保每個單字的發音正確。)
"pronunciation" 的動詞是 "pronounce",例如:
"Young children often find it difficult to pronounce words like 'spaghetti' or 'traffic'."
(年幼的孩子往往很難發出像是 spaghetti 或 traffic 這樣的字。)
"pronounced" 是過去分詞,也可以當形容詞用,意思是「明顯的」。
例如:
"The company’s need for strong leadership is more pronounced now that it is losing money."
(現在公司虧損,更需要強而有力的領導。)
Alright friends, let’s finish out our lesson about Tamagotchi right now.
The name Tamagotchi comes from the Japanese word "tamago" and "chi,"
the second half of the Japanese pronunciation of "watch."
That’s right! So these special Tamagotchis taught kids to care for a living pet and created lasting memories.
If you create lasting memories, it means that you’re making or doing something that you will remember for a long time.
So what’s another way we could use “to create memories” in a sentence?
You could say that the camping trip you took with your family in the mountains created memories that would last a lifetime.
I like that!
So, it taught kids to care for a living pet—of course, Tamagotchis aren’t actually alive—and it created lasting memories.
Now the writer’s generation is remembering their youth and sharing the fun with kids and grandkids.
How does our lesson end here?
It ends with the note that Tamagotchis are proof that while trends come and go, they often come back again.
Now we have this word “proof” here, and we need to talk about what it means. Dave, can you give us a definition?
Absolutely. “Proof” typically is a piece of evidence or a fact that shows something is true.
So, for example, you could say, “She said that he stole her lunch, but she has no proof.”
There is nothing that actually shows that he did what she is accusing him of. She has no proof.
That’s right. Maybe they should check and see if there are any sandwich crumbs on his desk—that would be proof!
But we also have this phrase “come and go,” and we’re talking about trends.
That’s right. So if something comes and goes, it means that it occurs or appears briefly—
it’s there for a short time and then it goes away.
This often happens with things that are trendy or popular.
For example, clothing styles. Some clothing styles come and go.
They’re popular for a few months or a few years, and then they fall out of fashion.
Another good example is something like pop music. A lot of popular music comes and goes.
It’s really popular for a few weeks during the summer, and then you don’t hear it again
until years later when they play it on a “remember the oldies” radio station.
That’s a really good point.
This lesson has reminded me a lot of the lesson we had last month about nostalgia,
because there are so many things from my childhood that are starting to come back.
Originally, it was a trend and it had already gone out of fashion,
but because of social media, and now people in my generation having kids, these trends are coming back.
That’s right. Even I’m giving a lot of things to my kids—
old video games that I used to play are making a comeback in my home as I share them with my kids.
That’s right. Friends, do you know of any toys that are making a comeback from your childhood?
What kind of trends have you seen come and go?
Think about that as we go to today’s Fun Fact.
Hello Fact Friends!
My name is Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun fact for you today!
Did you know that the first Tamagotchis were aliens from Planet Tamagotchi?
It’s true! They were still a toy—not a real alien, I hope!
But each day was a year of their life, and they died after around 28 days. Uh-oh!
But don’t worry—you could get another one! Haha! Sounds fun.
And that is today’s Fun Fact!
Well friends, as we come to the end of our lesson, I have a question for you and for Dave. Are you ready?
I’m ready.
Here’s our Talk About It question for today: Would you want to own a Tamagotchi? What do you think?
I don’t think I would want to own a Tamagotchi now. I might get one for my kids,
just to give them some practice with having a pet.
But actually, I don’t really need that because they already have some pets at home, so… maybe not.
I think that’s very similar to my answer as well.
My kids already have two cats at home that they enjoy playing with and taking care of.
So for me, that’s better.
But maybe if you can’t have a pet at home, a Tamagotchi is a good option for you.
Well friends, that’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And I’m David.
And we’ll see you next time, right here on Studio Classroom. Bye!
