I’ve heard people say chess is like exercise for your brain.

Chess is one of the oldest games in the world.
Each player starts with sixteen pieces. There’s a king,
a queen, eight pawns, and other pieces.
Players take turns moving their pieces.
There are special rules to move each kind of piece.
A player wins when they checkmate the other player’s king.
In a checkmate, the king is trapped and can’t move.
Chess is not an easy game.
Each player must think carefully before moving each piece.

when you play a game with someone

You say it at the end of the game,
often if you have lost it or
if you thought it was a good competition.
Well, it sounds like they had a good time.
Sarah says, “That was fun,” and Greg agrees with Sarah.
He says, “It was. And you won.”
What does it mean to win in a game?
Well, it means you’re the best—you are number one.
In chess, there are only two players,
so one person wins and one person loses,
and occasionally no one wins, right?
And when you win a game,
we can say that you are the winner,
and the person who loses the game is called the loser.
Well, friends, did you listen closely and find our Find It answer?
Remember, the question is: How did Sarah win the game?
The answer is: She checkmated Greg’s king.
Garrett, can you tell us what it means to checkmate someone’s king?
Sure. Checkmate is a big word. Let’s talk about king first.
Each player has sixteen pieces, one of which is the king.
Your king might be your most important piece.
You can’t have your king die, or you lose the game.
So, when you checkmate,
it doesn’t mean that the king dies or is about to die.
It means the king is about to die
and can’t do anything to stop it.
No matter where they move or what they do,
they will always lose—so the game ends.
So, when your king is checkmated, then you lose. Is that right?
That’s right.
And there is also checking the king. If you say check,
then you’re about to kill the other king,
but they can do something to stop it.

Okay, so Sarah says that she was just lucky.
She says that she doesn’t play chess often,
so she’s not very good.
She’s not very good.
That’s all right—she’s still learning this great game of chess.
Greg says he doesn’t know about that.

He tells her that she was confident with her moves.
If you’re confident doing something,
it means that you believe in yourself.
You don’t think twice about it—you are sure about it.
Sarah is thankful and says that Greg was confident too.
Greg continues to share about something that happened:
Sarah took his queen early on in the game.
Now, when we think about a queen,
we usually think about the queen being the wife of a king.
So Garrett, am I guessing correctly that in chess,
a queen is a very important piece as well?
Your queen might be your most capable or most powerful piece on the board.
If you lose it, it’s hard to win the game.
Now, friends, let’s go over to Sonya.

But sometimes it does, right? Because people need to take turns.
This means one person makes a move,

How do the pieces move around the board in Chinese chess?
The pieces move on lines, not from square to square.
Well, we hear that chess and Chinese chess
do have some things that are similar.
They both have pieces that can do different things.
In chess, you have a king,
and in Chinese chess, there’s a general—right?
When we talk about the word general,
we are talking about the army.
Soldiers fight in an army,
and the general is the leader of the army.
So in Chinese chess, the general is the most powerful piece.

just like you would trap a king in chess.
And James tells Susie that yes, it’s the same that way.
Now Susie wants to know: How else—
in what other ways—are the pieces different?
Well, James says that all the pieces are round.
If you see pieces from Chinese chess,
they’re just little circles with pictures on them.
Whereas chess pieces are a little more 3D—usually, right?
These pieces are round.
On one side, you’ll see a Chinese character or a Chinese word,
and then you turn it over so you can’t see the other side.
These words include words such as:
soldier, elephant, or cannon.
Well, let’s talk about some of the words that we just learned.
First of all, those pieces are round.
Round things are kind of like a circle.
Circles have round edges.
And soldiers are the people who fight in an army.
Soldiers in Chinese chess have the lowest rank—
they’re like the pawns in Western chess.
All right.
And we also hear the word cannon...
A cannon is a machine in an army
that can shoot out powerful metal balls or other things
that can destroy things.
Right. Now Susie wants to know more about the game.
She asks, "How do the pieces move around the board?"
The board is that flat surface that you’re playing on.
There might be pictures on a game board, right?
And Garrett just used the term game board.
Yes, when you play a board game,
you have a piece of cardboard or a piece of paper,
and that is your board—
that’s where you play the game.
Well, in Chinese chess,
the pieces move on lines, not from square to square.
Yes, in chess, you put your pieces in the middle of a square,
but in Chinese chess, you put them on top of the lines.
Right.
So some of the rules are the same,
but it sounds like most of the rules are quite different.
