Hello, friends.
My name is Anne Marie,
and today is a great day to learn something new.
So, let’s do that together, friends!
My name is John, and this is Studio Classroom.
Do you like shoes, friends?
Because today we are talking all about a fashion trend
that has to do with shoes. That’s right — we are talking about
Crocs. Do you like them? OK.
Crocs are those
really round, very squishy
shoes. They’re made of something called foam,
and I guess they’re really good for not
slipping.
My little daughter
loves her Crocs.
I don’t have any Crocs. How about you?
I don’t have any Crocs either.
I’ve never really liked this shoe,
but a lot of people really do like them.
We are going to learn all about them today in our article
called "Fabulous Footwear."
Let’s get started with our first reading for the day.
Fabulous Footwear
Comfortable Crocs are for everyone
Love them or hate them,
Crocs have made a splash in the world of footwear.
What began as a strange-looking, boat-friendly shoe
soon became a global fashion trend.
Hi, I’m Jack。
今天的 usage tip 是 “what began as... soon became” 的句型。
它是在表達某個事物一開始是什麼樣子,很快就變為另一個狀態。
來看今天課文的句子:
“What began as a strange-looking, boat-friendly shoe soon became a global fashion trend.”
句子的主詞是 what began as,是一個名詞子句,具有自己的主詞 what 和動詞 begin,但是名詞子句是一種不完整的詞句,無法單獨成句,所以搭配了主要動詞 became 來形成完整的句子。
再看一句:
“What began as a state-of-the-art facility soon became an abandoned building.”
這裡一開始是最先進的設施,很快就變成了一棟廢棄的建築。
OK, friends,
let’s talk about fabulous footwear, specifically Crocs.
But let’s first talk about what this word fabulous means.
If something is fabulous,
it means it’s strange and wonderful.
But typically,
we use this word when we’re saying something is
really outstanding or excellent.
You could say,
“Wow, kid, that was a fabulous violin performance!”
Here’s another example of how you could use it in a sentence:
“I had a fabulous night out last weekend.”
OK, we see here:
Comfortable Crocs are for everyone.
According to our writer,
these are shoes that anyone can wear.
John: I’m not quite sure if I agree with that or not,
but let’s keep reading and find out
what’s so great about Crocs.
OK, if you have feet,
you can wear them! And we read:
“Love them or hate them, Crocs have made a splash in the world of footwear.”
This phrase “love it or hate it / love them or hate them”
suggests that
you probably will have an opinion,
but regardless, Crocs have made a splash.
Crocs — I learned — is a U.S. company
from the state of Colorado,
those mountains in Colorado.
And they’re known for these foam clogs.
We call this style of shoe a clog —
it’s sort of heavy and chunky.
Yeah, that’s a really great point.
Clogs can be other types of shoes as well.
Sometimes the soles are made of wood,
or sometimes clogs can be comfortable work shoes too.
They have a rounded toe and they generally fit larger on the feet.
So yes, Crocs are a type of clog,
although they’re not made of the same material most clogs are made of.
Yeah, I think of wooden clogs in the Netherlands
being a very famous old kind of clog.
But there’s a phrase here — “make a splash.”
I know splash is normally something with water.
What does that mean?
OK, if something makes a splash,
it means that it attracts a lot of attention.
So if someone or something is making a splash,
usually a lot of people are paying attention or looking at it.
I see. So these shoes made a splash.
I think people were surprised by them,
because we read:
“What began as a strange-looking, boat-friendly shoe
soon became a global fashion trend.”
If something is boat-friendly,
it means it’s easy to use on a boat —
so they don’t slip very easily.
So they’re great if you’re walking on
something like a boat where there might be a lot of water — a slipping danger.
Now, this is really interesting,
because when I was in college, John,
one of the most popular shoes where I went to school
— because I went to school in Florida — was what was called a boat shoe.
Now, boat shoes are
kind of similar to Crocs,
but they’re a little bit dressier.
The kind I had was called Sperrys.
They were the type of shoe that could get wet
and also would keep you from slipping.
Were they also the kind of shoe you could just
slip on and off?
Yes, that’s exactly what they were.
OK, so the word slip means to slide, right?
So you don’t want to slip and fall.
But you can slip on Crocs —
and I think this is why they became a global fashion trend.
Fashion — remember, we learned that a few months ago —
means having to do with the clothes
and style of the things you wear.
Now, if something is a fashion trend,
it means that it is a style or way of dressing
that’s widely accepted by a lot of people,
but usually for a set amount of time.
Generally, fashion trends come and go.
What’s fashionable for a while
isn’t fashionable in later years.
OK, we have more to learn when it comes to Crocs, friends!
We’ll be right back after our next reading.
Fabulous Footwear
Born in 2002,
Crocs were designed as boating shoes
due to their water resistance and slip-proof soles.
Their creators had a simple goal:
they wanted to make
comfortable shoes that could handle wet surfaces.
When the first Crocs debuted at a boat show in Florida,
they sold out almost immediately.
The shoes also quickly became popular
with hospital workers and others
because they were comfortable and functional.
Let’s take a look at the noun "creator."
It means 創作者.
For example:
Though the creator is unknown, the beautiful workmanship shows the maker was highly skilled.
雖然創作者不詳,但從其精美的工藝可看出製作者的技藝高超。
A related noun is "creation," which refers to 創造或創立.
For instance:
The creation of Netflix forced the TV industry to shift from providing scheduled programming to on-demand content.
Netflix 的創立迫使電視業從提供排定好的節目轉為提供隨選點播內容。
The adjective "creative" means 有創意的.
For example:
I’m taking a creative writing course in hopes that someday I will become a published author.
我在上創意寫作課,希望有一天能成為一名出版作家。
All right, let’s continue learning about these fabulous shoes, friends.
Born in 2002, Crocs were designed as boating shoes
due to their water resistance and slip-proof soles.
There are a few things that we need to look at in this sentence.
First of all, let’s talk about what "resistance" is.
OK, well, resisting means fighting against something.
But when we’re talking about materials that have resistance or are resistant,
it means that they are keeping something, like water, out —
so your shoes basically won’t stay wet.
That’s right. And people can be resistant as well.
For example, you could be resistant to criticism,
or if you have a low resistance to cold,
it means that you don’t tolerate cold weather very easily.
OK, there’s something else we need to talk about.
We need to review for a minute the word "slip" or "slip-proof."
We talked about it a little bit earlier.
So the idea of slip-proof is to have a textured surface
that keeps you from slipping or falling.
And when you add a little hyphen and the word proof,
it means that thing will — hopefully — not happen.
You could talk about something being mosquito-proof, for example —
it doesn’t let mosquitoes in.
But here, having shoes that are slip-proof is really helpful.
And we learn another word here about shoes — the soles (s-o-l-e-s),
which means the part of your shoe that touches the ground.
You want that to be slip-proof, don’t you?
That’s right.
OK, friends, we read on here:
"Their creators had a simple goal."
I love it when there’s a product made
because there is a specific problem or a specific goal in mind.
Now, what is this goal?
They wanted to make comfortable shoes that could handle wet surfaces.
You know, earlier I talked about a pair of boat shoes that I had a long time ago,
and they gave me blisters.
I liked them, but they weren’t very comfortable.
So I can see why this was the goal of Crocs’ creators.
There’s a phrase: "comfort is king."
You might buy things for different reasons,
but you’ll use it if it’s comfortable.
We also read that they wanted to make shoes that could handle wet surfaces.
If you can handle something — that’s a verb — what does it mean?
It means that you’re able to manage something easily or well.
Cool.
And the Crocs creators obviously began selling them.
We read that:
"When the first Crocs debuted at a boat show in Florida, they sold out almost immediately."
Anne Marie, you said you went to college in Florida.
I did.
So that’s why boat shoes were so popular in Florida.
A lot of people spend time on the water —
either on boats or at the beach —
so boat shoes are something that a lot of people have.
Now, the word here, "debuted," has a silent "t" in it.
It means to be shown to the public for the first time.
I wonder if they expected this response.
I don’t think that they did,
because it seems like it was kind of a surprise.
But that word "debuted," friends,
can be used in other ways as well.
Sometimes we talk about a movie star or a singer’s career,
and we use the word "debut" to tell when they first appeared to the public.
For example:
You could say that actress first debuted on a children’s show.
All right, but we read on here that these shoes
"sold out almost immediately."
Now, if you sell out of something,
it means that you’re selling a product
and then there’s nothing left because they’ve all been bought.
It’s a great thing if you’re selling things,
but it’s a bad thing if you want to buy something.
I could say:
I wanted to buy a chocolate chip cookie, but they were all sold out.
Here, these shoes sold out almost immediately — or right away.
And the shoes also quickly became popular with another group:
hospital workers and others, because they were comfortable and functional.
That’s the word we want you to know today: functional.
It means useful or able to be used in a convenient way, right?
That’s right.
All right, friends — we’ll be right back after today’s Info Cloud.
Hello, friends! Welcome to Info Cloud!
Hey Garrett, have you noticed how confident Sara has been lately?
Do you know what changed?
Mmm, yes — she recently started a new job
and decided to put her best foot forward.
Oh, that’s great to hear!
When you say she decided to put her best foot forward,
you mean she is making a great effort to make a good impression, right?
Yes. To put your best foot forward means to try your hardest
and do your best to make a positive impression.
That expression is often used when someone is starting something new,
like a job or a project, and they want to show their best qualities.
Right.
It’s like when you’re meeting someone for the first time —
you want to be at your best to leave
a good impression on the person.
I think by putting your best foot forward,
you not only impress others
but also boost your own confidence.
And it’s important to remember
that even if things don’t go perfectly,
the effort you put in can make a big difference.
put your best foot forward 拿出最好的表現
好的開始是成功的一半。
今天跟大家介紹的用語是:put your best foot forward,字面上是「踏出你最好的那一隻腳」,意思就是盡最大的努力做到最好,給別人留下積極的印象。
這個片語通常用來形容一個人開始做一件新的事情,比如一份新的工作,他們想拿出最好的表現。就像你第一次見某人的時候,你會希望給對方留下好的印象。
John is putting his best foot forward at his new job.
John 在新的工作崗位上努力拿出最好的表現。
Put your best foot forward 不僅能打動別人,還能夠提升自己的信心。
而重要的是,即使事情不完美,你所付出的努力也會產生正面的影響。
這就是今天的 Info Cloud。下次雲端見!

Many doubted that Crocs —
often called the ugliest shoes around —
would ever be fashionable.
But fashion works in mysterious ways,
and by the mid-2010s,
they began appearing on famous feet and in fashion shows.
Crocs now come in many styles and in a rainbow of colors,
and those thirteen holes in the top are perfect for Jibbitz —
these small charms: flowers, stars,
hearts, and animals, just to name a few —
let wearers express their personality.
So, will Crocs have a place on your feet?
其次來看 charm 這個名詞,意思是小飾品。
譬如:
Friends gave his girlfriend a bracelet decorated with little silver charms, each symbolizing a special memory they shared.
Friends 送給女友一條手鍊,上面有一些小銀飾,每一個都象徵著他們一段共同的特殊記憶。
Charm 當動詞則是指「使著迷、使迷住」,
譬如:
"You can’t charm your way out of doing the chores, Justin, so don’t even try," his mother said.
他媽媽說:「Justin,你不可能靠自己的魅力來逃避做家事,連想都別想。」
Charm 的形容詞是 charming,意思是迷人的。
譬如:
"For our honeymoon, we stayed in the charming English village of Bibury, known for ancient cottages and stained-glass churches."
我們蜜月時住在迷人的英國 Bibury 村莊,這裡以古老的小屋與彩繪玻璃教堂而聞名。
Okay, friends, let’s continue learning about Crocs together.
Many doubted that Crocs,
often called the ugliest shoes around,
would ever be fashionable.
What do you think, friends?
I tend to think that Crocs are kind of ugly.
I know they’re popular.
I know a lot of people like them.
But I might have to agree with this.
Well, there’s the word "fashionable" you should also know.
We learned "fashion" as a noun —
right, the style of the things you wear.
So fashionable is the adjective,
and it means something is in good fashion, basically.
That’s right.
Here’s an example of how you could use it in a sentence:
"She liked the dress even though it wasn’t very fashionable."
But we read here:
"Fashion works in mysterious ways,"
and by the mid-2000s,
they began appearing on famous feet and in fashion shows.
I like this phrase:
"Something works in mysterious ways."
It means that nobody knows why it happens —
nobody knows why things become fashionable or not. It just happens sometimes.
Yeah, and this phrase comes from a very famous English saying:
"God works in mysterious ways."
You just don’t know why or when something will happen in life.
So, friends, it’s so true with fashion.
Sometimes something that is ugly becomes really popular.
If you remember a few months ago,
we learned all about high heels and how men used to wear incredibly high heels in the world of fashion.
But here we read more about where Crocs have arrived.
"Crocs now come in many styles and in a rainbow of colors."
That’s an interesting use of that word.
If you see this:
"A rainbow of something,"
the idea is that there are a lot of different colors to choose from
or that something is comprised of many different colors.
Oh, that makes sense.
So you could say:
"There were a rainbow of different candies on the counter of the store."
Many different styles — but we typically use this phrase when the colors are different.
And I’ll tell you what — if you go to the Crocs website,
there are so many different kinds of Crocs.
There’s a lot to choose from.
But there’s something else that you can get to go with your Crocs —
and that’s what we’re learning about in this next sentence:
"Those 13 holes in the top of them are perfect for Jibbitz."
Now, Jibbitz is something very interesting.
We find out in the next sentence that these are small charms —
and charm is a word you learned about.
It’s a little piece of jewelry, normally —
like a little picture of something: flowers, stars, hearts, and animals, just to name a few.
This phrase — "just to name a few" — is used when you’re listing
some examples out of many.
Can you use that in another sentence?
Sure:
"There are many drink options at the restaurant: soda, coffee, tea — just to name a few."
Cool. Well, we are just naming a few things about Crocs.
I do know that I’ve seen some famous musicians who wear Crocs,
and a lot of college students are wearing Crocs —
probably because they’re convenient.
I think so.
I know a lot of my friends’ children also wear Crocs
because they’re easy to put on and take off.
They also don’t get dirty as easily.
We have one more sentence here at the end of our lesson, friends:
"Will Crocs have a place on your feet?"
Now, if something has a place somewhere,
it means that it has a role or it occupies a position.
So I could say:
"Does turkey have a place in a Thanksgiving meal?"
Or:
"Oh, I hope I have a place in that meeting!"
It’s always a question with fashion —
does this one item in your wardrobe have a place in your outfit?
That’s right.
All right, friends —
we’ll be right back after we go to today’s Fun Fact.
Oh hello, fact friends! I am Detective Ah Back.
I am Detective Ernest Finder, and I have a fun crocodile fact — ah, back, back, back!
I have a fun fact for you today.
Did you know that Crocs get their name from crocodiles?
Crocodiles are big reptiles — ah! Don’t bite me!
Crocodiles are able to handle water and land — just like Crocs. Get away!
And that is today’s fun crocodile fact. Excuse me — I shouldn’t have brought crocodiles today.
Friends, it’s the end of our lesson, which means it’s time for a "Talk About It" question.
Here we go:
"What is most important to you when choosing footwear for yourself?"
Oh wow — well, there are different kinds of footwear.
If I’m trying to go to a nice event,
I want footwear that is clean and looks good.
But I think something that’s comfortable —
that I can use a lot — is important to me.
I don’t like having shoes that I only use like once every few months.
That’s a really good point.
What about you, friends?
How do you choose your footwear?
That’s all the time we have for today.
My name is Anne Marie.
And my name is John.
Friends, we’ll see you next time —
right here on Studio Classroom.
