Welcome to Let’s Talk in English!
My name is Garrett.
And my name is Esther.
Today our topic is Special Days, and our special title is:
Lost Sock Memorial Day.
Lost Sock Memorial Day.
Now, a memorial is something that helps us remember.
It’s often a statue or a day,
and it’s when we think about and remember something
or someone with a thankful heart. Yeah.
There’s one specific day in the United States called
Memorial Day, which is on May 26.
This is a day to remember all the soldiers
who fought for the United States
and who died for it in different wars.
Now, today our special day is:
Lost Sock Memorial Day.
Garrett, can you help us with our reading?
Lost Sock Memorial Day is a fun day.
It is celebrated every year on May 9.
It was begun to remember all the socks that are missing.
To celebrate, you can search your house for any
single socks that have lost their mate.
Besides that, you can turn
single socks into sock puppets or bedwarmers.
It’s fun to remember that
even little things like socks can make us smile.
Thank you, Garrett. What you just read made me smile.
Now let’s go to our Find Out question.
Our question is:
What can you make with single socks?
What can you make with single socks?
Now, friends, a single sock is one sock.
Usually, when you wear socks, you wear two of them
that look the same.
So a single sock is one sock
that doesn’t have a matching sock to go with it.
Right, in our reading we heard the word “mate.”
This is like the sock that goes with that
single sock — that looks the same.
So what should we do with it? We’re going to find out later!
Exactly. Now,
let’s go over to Sonia to start learning today’s keywords.
I couldn’t find the mate to either sock.
Susie
We celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day.
You think of fun things to do with all your single socks.
What else can you do besides wearing two that don’t match?
Sam
I really should continue to search for my missing socks.
Sam, did you know that your socks don’t match?
Yes, I know. I couldn’t find the mate to either sock,
so I thought I’d wear them together.
Well, today is a good day to do that.
Why is that?
Because today we celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day.
How do you celebrate?
You think of fun things to do with all your single socks.
Friends, have you ever done this before?
Have you ever worn two different socks?
I have. I have some socks that are just one color,
but those colors are quite similar —
but not the same.
So I’ve accidentally worn socks that don’t match.
Alright. And today we start off with Susie asking Sam
if Sam knows that he’s wearing two different socks.
She says, “Did you know your socks don’t match?”
They don’t match because they look different.
They have different colors or pictures on them.
Well, Sam does know this.
He couldn’t find the mate to either sock.
Right, and here the word “mate” means your match in a pair.
But we often use this word when we talk about the person
you are married to — that person is your mate.
Right. And in other parts of the world, like Australia,
you might say mate to describe a good friend.
Right. Mate is a good word to use when you’re talking about
friends in Australia.
Well, Sam tells us that he thought he’d wear them together —
these two different socks.
Exactly. And I think we should go over to Sonia to learn more.
I couldn’t find the mate to either sock, so I thought I’d wear them together.
I don’t like either plan.
I won’t go to the game either.
She showed me two designs. Either is fine with me.
Thanks, Sonia.
Well, Susie says that today is a good day
to wear two socks that don’t match.
That’s a funny thing to say!
Today is a good day to do that.
And that’s today’s calendar phrase:

Today is a good day to do that.
Ah, it’s a beautiful day.
I think I’ll ride my bike.
Today is a good day to do that.
Or maybe I’ll play basketball.
Today is a good day to do that.
Or maybe I’ll go to the park.
Today is a good day to do that.
Today is a good day to do anything outside!
Yeah! Today’s a good day!
Today is a good day to do that.
Today is a good day to do that.

Sam wants to know, “Why is that?”
Why is today a good day to wear different socks?
Well, that’s because today we celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day.
That’s what Susie says, right?
If you celebrate something, it means you’re going to think about it
or do something special because it’s a special day.
Maybe you celebrate your birthday or Christmas.
Right. Like we said, memorial is a word that describes
having a memory of something or making it special.
Well, how do we celebrate this unique day?
Susie tells us how we celebrate. She says:
You think of fun things to do with all your single socks.
And here, the word single means one.
Single means one, just like the word double means two.
So Susie’s going to be telling us
what fun things we can do with these single socks that do not have a mate.
Exactly!
Well friends,
go find some of those single socks in your wardrobe
or around your house while we take a quick break.
We’ll be right back, so don’t go away!
🎵 Let’s Talk in English, Let’s Talk in English… 🎵
Let’s take this through the day, every day.
Friends, you know, socks are funny things.
If you buy different designs,
it’s often easy to lose one single sock.
Exactly.
Depending on where you put them—
in your wardrobe or in your room—
you might misplace them or put them in the wrong place.
Right, so I have a tip for you!
You can put your socks in a laundry bag with a zipper.
That way, you will keep them together.
Or—buy all socks that look the same!
Let’s get back to our lesson.
What else can you do with single socks besides wearing two that don’t match?
You can make sock puppets.
What else?
You can put rice in them and make bed warmers.
Those are fun ideas!
But I really should just continue to search for my missing socks.
You should!
And tomorrow is a perfect day to do that—
It’s National Clean Your Room Day!
Well, Sam wants to know what else we can do with these single socks that don’t match.
What can we do with them?
You can’t wear them—or you could,
if you want to wear socks that don’t match.
But let’s look at some other things you can do.
Right. And Sam uses this word besides.
Besides means other than.
So, other than wearing two different socks,
what other things can we do?
Sonia, can you help us with this word “besides”?
Sam
What else can you do with single socks besides wearing two that don’t match?
What other gifts did you get besides toys?
Good baseball players do a lot besides catching and throwing.
The couple walked beside the lake.
The dog ran beside the bike.
Thank you, Sonia.
Friends, now let’s answer our Find It question:
What can you make with single socks?
You can make sock puppets or bedwarmers.
Yes, friends! These are some fun crafts you can do with those socks.
So let’s talk about them.
Earlier this month, we showed you how you can make a sock puppet.
This is when you take a single sock and make a puppet out of it.
It can be a fun thing to do
if you are around kids a lot,
or if you just like the look of a fun sock puppet.
You take that single sock and you can stick
craft foam, or eyes and a nose—other things—to it to make a puppet.
What else can we make with a single sock?
Well, we heard you can put rice into that sock and—eat it?
No! Make a bed warmer, right?
Sometimes in the winter, it’s very cold and your bed is cold.
Now, if you first heat the rice and put it in a sock,
then place this single sock with rice under your blanket,
it will keep your bed warm.
Yeah. But you’ll need to make sure to close off that sock
so the rice doesn’t come pouring out all over your bed.
That would not be fun to clean up.
These are fun ideas!
But Sam thinks he should just continue to search for his missing socks.
If something is missing,
you can’t find it—you’re not sure where it is—
but you might be able to find it if you keep looking.
Suzy agrees with him. So she said, "You should."
And Suzy tells us about another special day that is tomorrow.
Ah yes—tomorrow is a perfect day to look for that missing sock.
It’s National Clean Your Room Day!
So, May 10 is a day when everyone
can be cleaning their rooms and looking for their missing socks.
I do have a missing sock.
I guess I’ll have to look for it tomorrow.
Friends, it’s time now to review all of our keywords!
Here is our first keyword:
celebrate
We celebrated her birthday today.
missing
The dog is missing.
single
There is a single tree in the park.
mate
Where is the mate to this shoe?
besides
Who is coming besides Allen?
Friends, those are today’s keywords. You’re doing a great job!
And now it’s your turn.
Let’s practice using them in a sentence:
I lost the ____ to this chopstick. I need a pair of chopsticks to eat, but I can’t find one of them.
You’re right: I lost the mate to this chopstick.
She has only a ____ pencil. She only has one.
Good job: She has only a single pencil.
What will we eat? Pizza, fried chicken, French fries.
Correct: What will we eat besides pizza?
Did you find your ____ shoe? One shoe was lost. You couldn’t find it.
That’s right: Did you find your missing shoe?
We won the game! Let’s ____!
Great answer: We won the game! Let’s celebrate!
You guessed all the words correctly!
Let’s celebrate! Be sure to come again for Your Turn!
Suzy:
“Sam, did you know that your socks don’t match?”
Sam:
“Yes, I know. I couldn’t find the mate to either sock,
so I thought I’d wear them together.”
Suzy:
“Well, today is a good day to do that!”
Sam:
“Why is that?”
Suzy:
“Because today we celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day!”
Sam:
“How do you celebrate?”
Suzy:
“You think of fun things to do with all your single socks!”
Sam:
“What else can you do with single socks besides wearing two that don’t match?”
Suzy:
“You can make sock puppets.”
Sam:
“What else?”
Suzy:
“You can put rice in them and make bed warmers.”
Sam:
“Those are fun ideas! But I really should just continue to search for my missing socks.”
Suzy:
“You should! And tomorrow is a perfect day to do that—it’s National Clean Your Room Day!”
One, two—let’s review!
Let’s talk about socks.
Socks?
Yes—lost socks!
Why lost socks? Don’t you know?
Today we celebrate Lost Sock Memorial Day!
Really?
That’s a special day to remember lost socks.
Yes! And I’m always losing socks.
Me too!
So how do we celebrate?
We think of fun things to do with our single socks.
That’s easy! We can wear socks that don’t match.
Besides that, what else can we do?
Yeah—make sock puppets!
Well, that’s a fun idea. Anything else?
Put rice in them and make bed warmers!
That’s a great idea. Anything else?
I think the best idea is to keep looking for the other sock.
You’re right.
And probably the best way to find it is to clean your room.
Ah yes—and the best time to clean your room is tomorrow.
Do it tomorrow!
Hey, welcome back friends!
My name is Cela, and this is What’s Next.
In this feature, we look at some pictures that tell a story.
Let’s look at the first two pictures and guess what will happen next.
The first picture has a boy—sleepy, hmm...
Let’s take a closer look.
I see lots of papers around, and a notebook. Oh!
I think he was studying or doing homework late into the night.
I also see an alarm clock.
Time is midnight!
But wait—the clock is not plugged in.
Ah—the boy’s awake now!
And he and his cat do not look happy.
He looks very surprised—maybe a little scared too.
He’s looking at his alarm clock...
Did the boy forget something?
Did he forget to go somewhere?
Hmm… what do you think?
What will happen next?
Of course! The boy’s late for school.
He tries to catch his bus, but the bus left without him.
Oh no! The boy missed his bus—and maybe a class too!
This happened because of the clock.
The boy overslept and didn’t wake up early.
I usually get up early before going to school.
I like getting up early.
But once in a while, I oversleep—
especially after a long night of studying or doing homework.
Always turn on your alarm clock, friends!
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next!
Friends, there are many different kinds of socks.
What kinds of socks do you usually wear?
Do you wear sports socks or dress socks?
Yeah! Do you wear short socks or long socks—or even toe socks?
You know, those socks where your toes go into different holes.
Those are fun socks!
And in the wintertime, many women wear long tights—
these are socks that go all the way up to your waist
and cover your toes.
They can keep you nice and warm!
That’s right—we wear socks because they keep our shoes nice.
If you walk around all day without socks,
your shoes will be a bit more smelly.
Right! And remember to change your socks often
so your feet won’t get too wet in the summertime.
Good point!
Friends, we hope to see you again tomorrow.
Remember—that’s right here on
Let’s Talk in English!
Goodbye!
