1.Fiction
Fiction is the classifiction of stories and narratives about imaginary persons and events. Nowadays, we divide fiction into three major subgenres--short stories, novella , and novel. " The Lady with the Dog" is a short story written by Anton Chekhov. Fictional works can also be caracatarized by their dealing with particular elements such as plot or character. Sicence fiction and detective fiction are subgenres that include both novella and novel such as Frank Herbert's "Dune" and short story.
2.Plot
Plot is referred to the sequence of events inside a fictional work, which affect other events by the principle of cause and effect. The five main parts of plot are exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and conclusion. In "Roman Fever", the climax happens when Mrs. Slade reveals what she knows about Mrs. Ansley's rendez-vous with her husband Delphin.
3.Narration and Point of View
Narration is the act of telling a story, usually in some kind of chronological order. There are three type of narration. First-parson narration uses pronoun I. Elizabeth Gaskell's Cranford is a good example. Second-person narration uses pronoun You. Jay McInerney employed the second-person voice in Bright Lights, Big City. Third-person narration uses prnouns He,She, They. J▪ k. Rowling used it in Harry Portter. Point of view is the perspective from which persons, events, and other details are viewed in a story. In Raymond Carver's " Cathedral", Robert is viewed as being interested in the world around him.
4.Character
An imaginary person who acts, appears or is reffered to in a literary work of fiction, poetry, or drama. We divide the character into flatcharacter and round character, major character and minor character, dynamic character and static character. In most modern fiction, the neutral term protagonist and antagonist are used for leading character and his opponent, because leading character is much more ordinary, not simply a "good guy". These terms don't imply either the presence or the absence of virtues or vices. Ebenezer Scrooge in Dicken's Christmas Carol is regarded as a hero by some people, but looked as just a protagonise by most people. One type of protagonist is antihero who doesn't act in typically heroic ways. Jay Gatsby in The Great Gatsby is an example.
5.Setting
Setting is the time and place of the action in the work of fiction, poetry and drama. It's useful to distinguish between general setting--the general time and place in which the story unfolds and particular setting--the times and places in which individual scenes take place. Gone With the Wind is a good example. The general setting is civil war--era south. It has many particular scenes, too. It opens, for instance, on an April morning on the porch of a north Georgia mansion called Tara. Setting is used to establish mood, situation and character. The first sentence of Allan Poe's poem " The Fall of the House Usher" express the feeling of gloom.
6.Theme
Theme is the main central idea or insight conveyed by a work in its entirety. A single literary work expresses multiple ideas. The themes of " The Two Crabs" are that example is the best perccept and that childern are sometimes wiser than parents.

Literature is imaginative. A Midsummer Night's Dream describes events surrounding the marriage of Thesseus and Hippolyta, including adventures of four Athenian young lovers and six actors who are manipulated by faries inhabiting the forest. In Act V, Thesseus adds that darkness and love have a way of exciting imagination. The lunatics resemble some features with the lovers and the poets for their imagination. Literature is of recognized artistic value, sometimes called classics. So, literature is eternal. In "Shall I Compare Thee to the Summer's Day", the lover's beauty will last forever, unlike the "fleeting beauty" of a summer's day. By putting his lover's beauty in the form of poetry which will last as long as it can be read, the poet preserve the beauty forever.
Literature course is an approach to leading us to the world of literature. In the course, we can have knowledge and understanding of literature terminologies and techniques so that we can enhance our personal appreciation about literature. In course, we practice in analyzing literature in greater depth and in considering alternative views of both literature and the problems the works explore.
The reaason why we study literature is that we may feel the power and pleasure or ecstasy gained from literature.
