子擊出，遭田子方於道，下車伏謁。子方不為禮。子擊怒，謂子方曰：“富貴者驕人乎？貧賤者驕人乎？”子方曰：“亦貧賤者驕人耳！富貴者安敢驕人！國君而驕人，則失去國；大夫而驕人則失去家。失其國者未聞有以國待之者也，失其家者未聞有以家待之者也。夫士貧賤，言不用，行不合，則納履而去耳，安往而不得貧賤哉！”子擊乃謝之。

Ziji, the prince of Wei, met his teacher, Mr. Tian Zifang, on the road. Ziji alighted from his cart and paid respect to his teacher. But Tian did not reciprocate. Enraged, Ziji said to his teacher, "Who could condescend to others. A noble and wealthy man or a low and poor man?" Tian replied, "Only the low and poor man could. How could a noble and wealthy man do the same? If a king condescends to his subjects, he will lose his kingdom. If a nobleman condescends to others, he will lose his fiefdom. I have heard that no one would treat the king without his kingdom as a king, nor the nobleman without his fief as a noble.  As for the poor and low, they could put on their sandals and leave if people do not like their words or behavior. Is there any place where they could not go?" So, Ziji apologized to Mr. Tian.
