US Calls on
With Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe again apologizing for his earlier remarks concerning WWⅡ “comfort women”, Washington has called on Japan to accept its responsibility for the matters. "We appreciate that the apology was made.” said deputy State Department spokesperson Tom Casey. “It is a step forward. But I think this is a very difficult issue. We certainly want to see the Japanese continue to address this and to deal with it in a forthright and responsible manner that acknowledges the gravity of the crimes that were committed.”
Abe has indicated on numerous occasions that he supports the landmark statement of apology issued in 1993 but that he would not make a further apology addressing this issue of sexual slavery. On Monday, he changed his position. The 1993 statement by then-Chief Cabinet Secretary Yohei Kono addressed an apology to the “comfort women” involved and acknowledged that Japan had directly or indirectly caused their pain and suffering.
Historians state that as many as 200,000 young women were forced to work as “comfort women”, or sexual slaves, for the Japanese military.
