amendment- the act of changing for the better; improvement.

laissez-faire-an economic doctrine that opposes governmental regulation of or

veto-the constitutional power of the chief executive of a state or nation to prevent or 

delay the enactment of legislation passed by the legislature.

executive- a person or group having administrative or managerial authority in an 

organization or the chief officer of a government, state, or political division.

impeachment-  a formal document charging a public official with misconduct 

in office.

red herring- any diversion intended to distract attention from the main issue.

referendum-the submission of a proposed public measure or actual statute to a 

direct popular vote.

appropriation-  something appropriated, especially public funds set aside for a 

specific purpose.

filibuster-the process or an instance of obstructing legislation by means of long speeches and other delaying tactics

judiciary- a system of courts of law for the administration of justice.

lame duck- an elected officeholder or group continuing in office during the period between failure to win an election and the inaugurationof a successor.

ratification-the declaration by which a nation formally accepts, with or without reservation, the content of a standardization agreement.  reservation; subscription.

gerrymandering-to divide (a geographic area) into voting districts in a way that givesone party an unfair 

advantage in elections.

eminent domain- the power of a government to take private property for public use without the owner's consent, provided just compensation is given.

boycott-to abstain from or act together in abstaining from using, buying, dealing with, or participating in as an expression of protest or disfavoror as a means of coercion.
