Hello everyone,
Welcome to Lets Talk in English. My name is Esther,
And my name is Garrett. Today, we have a holiday lesson,
and the name of our lesson is Lantern Festival.
Thats right,
Were talking about a special holiday in Chinese culture.
This day marks the 15th day of the New Year,
and we call it the Lantern Festival
because there are special lanterns involved, right?
What is a lantern? Well,
A lantern is a light that you can carry with you, right?
I think of lanterns from Western culture
as big, heavy metal things
that people used to carry around before electricity.
Inside, there was a candle or an oil lamp, right?
But today,
many people carry paper lanterns during Lantern Festival.
Thats right, some of them even fly up into the sky!
Friends, lets go learn about them in todays reading.
Lantern Festival is at the end of Chinese New Year. People
light and hang beautiful lanterns
everywhere. Lighting lanterns
is a symbol of letting go of the past years troubles.
It also means inviting good luck for the New Year. At night,
the lanterns shine
and make the streets and parks look wonderful.
There are riddles on the lanterns,
and everyone enjoys solving them. People also eat delicious food
such as sweet rice balls on Lantern Festival,
and there are parades with dancing dragons and lions.
Everyone has a great time celebrating with their friends
and family.
Thanks, Esther. That sounds like so much fun.
This is a special holiday.
Its not one of the ones we talk about the most,
but I think its worth celebrating.
And now,
lets go to our Find It question: What can James eat a lot of?
What can James eat a lot of? Find the answer in our lesson
today. Now, here’s Sonya with our keywords.
James說晚上點起燈籠真是好看。
They look so beautiful when you light them at night.
The verb "light" means to ignite or to turn on.
Sira說,點起燈籠象徵趕走過去一年的煩惱。
Lighting lanterns is a symbol of letting go of the past years troubles.
The phrase let go means to release or to put aside, and the noun trouble refers to problems or difficulties.
Siri說,今天是元宵節,我們到處都可以看到燈籠。
We’ll see lanterns everywhere tonight.
The adverb everywhere means in all places.
Sira說,
他的孩子在這一天不但愛吃湯圓,還喜歡看舞龍舞獅。
They also like watching the dancing dragons and lions.
The noun Lion means "獅子" in Chinese.
I love lanterns.
Me too! There are many different shapes and sizes.
They look so beautiful when you light them at night, yes.
Lighting lanterns
is a symbol of letting go of the past year’s troubles
and inviting good luck for the New Year, right?
I like to solve the riddles on the lanterns on Lantern Festival.
That’s fun, but not always easy.
Oh hey,
I thought of another type of lantern:
We didn’t talk about Jack-o’-lanterns.
We have those around Halloween time in October. They’re inside a pumpkin,
right? People will put a candle or a small light into a pumpkin,
and the pumpkin lights up.
Oh, its so fun. I love lanterns, and that’s what
Sarah says in our conversation today.
She thinks they’re great, and James also likes lanterns.
He tells us
there are many different shapes and sizes. We can say
there are many different kinds of lanterns.
They look so beautiful when you light them at night, yes.
It’s fun to see lots of little lights at night time
when it’s dark.
Now,
the word light here,
were using it as an action or a verb,
right? To light something up
means to add light to it, like a candle or a small lamp, to make it shine.
You might light a room by putting a candle there
or turning the lights on. Now,
Sonya’s gonna tell us about these words: look, taste, seem, and feel.
James說當你在夜裡點起燈籠,他們看起來好美.
They look so beautiful when you light them at night.
The linking verb look means "to appear" or "seem."
Other linking verbs include taste, seem, and feel.
Let’s look at some examples:
These chocolate cookies taste delicious.
(這些巧克力餅乾嘗起來很可口.)
Your plan seems good to me.
(我覺得你的計畫似乎很不錯.)
I don’t know why, but I feel very dizzy today.
(我不知道為什麼,不過我今天覺得頭很暈.)
Thank you, Sonya, and Sarah knows a lot about lanterns. She
knows why people light lanterns
during Lantern Festival.
She says that
lighting lanterns
is a symbol of letting go of the past year’s troubles.
Esther, what does that mean?
Right, well,
let’s talk about letting go of something.
When you let go of something,
you try to forget about it, usually.
It’s something that’s not very good.
Maybe you try to let go of your anger
you felt when you were young.
That way, you’re not thinking about it constantly,
you’re able to be free and live a more happy life. So here,
we are letting go of the past year’s troubles
or the difficult things that happened in the past year, right?
And this is
the meaning, or this is what lighting lanterns symbolizes.
James says they also are for inviting good luck for the New Year,
so we want good things to happen to us in the next year to come.
And theres something Sarah likes to do when she lights lanterns.
She likes to solve riddles on the lanterns! Ah,
that is interesting! Remember,
we are talking about special paper Chinese lanterns here,
and you can write things on the outside of them, right?
A riddle is like a question,
but
it’s almost like a trick question that you have to think about,
and if you can find the answer,
then that means you solve the answer to this riddle.
You can probably look up some fun easy riddles
online to see what we’re talking about,
though even the easy ones can be pretty difficult.
Right, and James thinks that these riddles are fun,
but not always easy to solve. I agree with him. Esther,
have you ever done a riddle on a lantern?
I have! When I taught at school,
my students would write riddles on lanterns,
but it was too hard for me to solve
because it was in Chinese. Wow!
Well, this is my first time hearing about this tradition,
but I’ll have to try it. Friends,
it’s time for a quick break. We’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s Talk in English: Ten minutes every day,
Every day, that’s the way!
Welcome back to the show, everyone!
Have you thought of any fun riddles for the Lantern Festival?
Is this something that you do every time
around this time of year?
Or would you prefer to just release or let go of a paper lantern
to show your letting go of the past year’s troubles?
Let’s continue to the next part of today’s lesson.
We’ll see lanterns everywhere tonight.
Yes, I can’t wait.
Me neither! Tonight,
I’m going to eat good food.
One of my favorites is sweet rice balls.
I like those too! I can eat a lot of them.
So can my children.
They also like watching the dancing dragons
and lions. That is fun!
Everyone has a great time celebrating Lantern Festival.
Sarah continues to share about this holiday
and says that they will see lanterns everywhere for the Lantern
Festival. Now, if you see something everywhere,
it means every place you look,
you will see it.
It’s all around you, yeah.
Everywhere is every place you might say in this town. There are bakeries everywhere. Seems like every time you walk, you’ll see a bakery in this town. Well, James says he can’t wait. That just means he doesn’t want to wait. He’s excited to go and see these lanterns. Sarah also can’t wait. She also really looks forward to seeing the lanterns, and she uses this word, "neither." Sonia, can you help us with it?
James 說,我等不及要看燈籠了。
Sarah
A 說,"I don’t like to work extra hours" (我不喜歡加班),B 說 "Me neither" 或是 "I don’t either" (我也不喜歡)。
還有對肯定句表示贊同,用 "to"。
A 說,"I want to go to that concert" (我想去看那場演唱會),B 說 "Me too" 或是 "I do too" (我也想去)。
Thank you, Sonia!
Now, this word "neither" can also be pronounced "neither," right? It means the same thing.
Sarah says that tonight she’s going to eat good food. That’s part of her celebration for the Lantern Festival.
What is she going to eat?
She says one of her favorites is sweet rice balls.
This is made from a special kind of rice flour, and there are fillings inside. Or sometimes, its just the plain rice flour with water.
Okay, well, Esther, what does that taste like?
Well, it’s kind of soft and chewy. It tastes like a mochi.
Okay, and they can have flavors like peanut or red bean, right?
Right.
And that leads us to our "Find It" question and the answer to it.
Our question is: What can James eat a lot of?
He can eat a lot of sweet rice balls, yes.
I know for this holiday, I’ve had a few too many of these before and got really full. They’re tasty.
They are very tasty!
And James also likes those. He eats a lot of them.
Sarah says her children can also eat a lot of them. They’re nice and sweet. Kids love them.
Now, there’s something that Sarah’s children also do during Lantern Festival.
They like to watch dancing dragons and lions. Really?
But dragons aren’t real, right?
Well, during Lantern Festival, there’s often a dragon and lion dance.
Okay, so what do they look like?
Well, people will wear costumes and pretend they are dragons and lions. They often have a special dance.
Wow, that sounds cool!
Yeah!
Lions are animals you would often find at the zoo or in places like Africa, but during Lantern Festival, you can see these special dances, right?
James says these dances are fun. We hear that everyone has a great time celebrating Lantern Festival.
It sure sounds like it, right?
Everyone has a great time celebrating.
That’s today’s calendar phrase:
Everyone has a great time celebrating.
Everyone has a great time celebrating.
大家慶祝得很開心!
Woo hoo! I love holidays!
Everyone has a great time celebrating. Our family gets together.
Everyone has a great time celebrating. We play games together.
Everyone has a great time celebrating. We have a special meal together, too.
And everyone has a great time eating and eating and eating!
Hahaha!
Everyone has a great time celebrating.
Everyone has a great time celebrating.
大家慶祝得很開心!
Wow, it sure does sound like fun to celebrate Lantern Festival!
There’s food, dances, and you even get to make those cool lanterns, right?
Don’t forget those riddles that you can write!
That’s right. Now, friends, let’s go ahead and review today’s keywords.
Here is our first keyword: light.
Light the candles on the cake.
Everywhere, everywhere. There are people everywhere today.
Let go, let go.
Can he let go of his old habits?
Trouble, trouble.
Mary worries about her troubles.
Lion, lion.
I’ve read a book about lions.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep practicing!
And now, it’s your turn.
Today’s words are light, everywhere, let go, troubles, and lions. Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
He wants to travel everywhere.
Can we light a fire tonight?
Lions are powerful animals.
Do you have many troubles?
I need to let go of my worries.
That’s right! I need to remind you to come again for your turn!
I love lanterns!
Me too!
There are many different shapes and sizes. They look so beautiful when you light them at night.
Yes, lighting lanterns is a symbol of letting go of the past year’s troubles and inviting good luck for the New Year, right?
I like to solve the riddles on the lanterns during Lantern Festival.
That’s fun, but not always easy!
We’ll see lanterns everywhere tonight.
Yes, I can’t wait!
Me neither. Tonight, I’m going to eat good food.
One of my favorites is sweet rice balls.
I like those too. I can eat a lot of them.
So can my children.
They also like watching the dancing dragons and lions.
That is fun!
Everyone has a great time celebrating Lantern Festival.
Hee hee hee!
Hi, Ginger! What are you doing here?
I’m here to celebrate the Lantern Festival. Look!
Oh, that’s a nice lantern, but it doesn’t look Chinese, huh?
I know, but lanterns come in different shapes and sizes.
That’s true!
Do you know why people like lanterns?
Yeah, so they can see at night.
Well, yes, but lanterns are also a symbol of letting go of troubles.
Oh, haha, good-bye, troubles! Hey, what about riddles? Do you know any riddles?
Yes, here’s a riddle: What can’t be used until it’s broken?
Huh? I don’t know. What can’t be used until it’s broken?
An egg!
Okay, here’s a riddle for you. What goes up but never comes down?
Hmm, I don’t know. What goes up but never comes down?
Your age! Hee hee hee!
Those are good riddles, yeah!
Hey, I’m going to share them with my friends.
That’s a good idea! Happy Lantern Festival, everyone!
Yeah!
Share the riddles!
Hi, Grandpa!
Happy Lantern Festival!
Hey, thanks, Maria!
Do you know any riddles?
Yes, I do.
But first, you need to answer a question.
Oh, well, okay. What’s the question?
What’s fun but not always easy?
Oh, let’s see. Oh, hiking is fun, but it’s not always easy.
True, but that’s not the answer I’m looking for. Try again.
Oh, I know! Solving riddles is fun, but it’s not always easy.
That’s right!
Yay! Now, can we do a riddle?
No, not yet. You need to answer one more question.
Okay, what’s the last question?
What do you like to do on Lantern Festival?
That’s easy! I like to solve riddles!
Ha ha! Good answer! Now, can you tell me your riddle?
Sure! What has no beginning, no end, and no middle?
No beginning, no end, and no middle? I give up. Tell me.
A donut!
Haha, no beginning, no middle, and no end.
Well, if you eat it, it has an end.
Every year for the Lantern Festival, thousands of paper lanterns are released out into the sky.
It looks amazing, but it can create a lot of trash that flies out into the world.
That’s true.
So think about other ways you can make these paper lanterns.
Do you have to send them up into the sky?
And there might even be some special materials you can use that disappear over time as they float out into nature.
So, friends, do enjoy celebrating this holiday!
We will see you again tomorrow, right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
