What do we first read here in our article?
Well, we see: how one of the biggest stars of the 1980s manages a life-changing disease.
Now as we see here, he was very popular in the 1980s.
And we also see a verb that we want to talk about—
that’s the verb manages.
Now if you manage something,
it means that you succeed in surviving or achieving something,
even though it was difficult.
That’s right. So you could say,
“Even though it was really hard to run the restaurant,
she managed and did a great job.”
That’s right.
We also see that this disease was life-changing.
Some diseases we get,
and maybe they do affect our lives,
but they don’t change the rest of our lives. Maybe we get over them.
But this disease—it has really changed how he lives his life.

about that here in a moment.
That’s right. So we read here:

Here, there are two great English expressions
to add to your vocabulary and your knowledge.
The first is “the shock of one’s life.”
It means the most surprising experience or news you receive—
and typically this is negative, though not always.
Here’s an example:
When she received the news that she didn’t get into med school, it was the shock of her life.
You know, when we’re talking about electricity,
we often talk about a shock, right?
When electricity zaps you—and it’s a very painful experience.
So a shock is often really upsetting.
And we read here too that he received the shock of his life
at the height of his career. What does that expression mean?
Okay.
We often use this expression when someone’s career has already been viewed over a long period of time,
and this is saying that there is a point when the person
has achieved the greatest success or prominence or respect in their career.
So if we’re looking back over this person’s career,
we could say,
“Oh, that movie was the height of his career.”
Or if you’re talking about someone in the present,
you could say,
“He is now at the height of his career.”
Interesting—and this expression gets you thinking,
because even though you can work hard and be famous,
it often goes away because of various factors.
We read here:
The upsetting news initiated a battle he could never have anticipated.
So if something is upsetting, that means it’s unpleasant, right?
That’s right. It means that it makes you upset.
If something is upsetting, usually you feel very badly about it.
That’s right.
And it initiated, or it began, a battle.
What is that battle,
and why could he never have anticipated it?

Michael’s life began in 1961 in Alberta, Canada.
One of five siblings, he was always small,
which led to problems at school.
He was constantly bullied,
but learned to use humor to calm situations—

If you’re bullied, it means someone is trying to harm you,
intimidate you, or coerce you.
Coercing means convincing you to do something you know is wrong.
But what did he do?
Well—first of all, can you use bullied in a sentence?

She had to change schools because she was bullied so much.
Now of course, here bully or bullied is a verb.
But a person can be a bully as well, when we use the noun form of the word.

it means that it benefits you, it can be useful,

Do you know what else will definitely serve you well?
Practicing your English.
I know that when I’ve studied other languages,
it serves me well in unexpected situations.

We’re not saying exactly when this skill served him well.
We’re just saying later on in his life, it was useful.
This is a great way for you to say an amount of time
when you don’t know an exact date.
So this skill served him well in later years.
That’s right. You could say:
The farmer planted some apple trees, and in later years, they produced a lot of fruit.
Sometimes you might talk about a person’s later years
if you already know when they die—
that means the last part of their life, their later years.
It’s a little bit of a different usage.

The word audio—meaning to hear—is right in there.
So an audition is when the directors hear and see if you’re any good for the role.
That is the audition.
Rejection is another word that’s connected to auditions sometimes.
And a rejection is when you are turned down, refused, or said no to.
For example:
He received many rejections before he finally found an investor willing to fund his business.
And yes, at the beginning of today’s program, we talked about rejections.
This is something that everybody goes through, and Michael also had to go through as well.
But we read on:
Michael hit pay dirt when he won the role of Alex P. Keaton in Family Ties.
Now, this phrase hit pay dirt means to make money or a profit after you have put in a lot of effort.
That’s right. You could say:
He hit pay dirt when he dug up gold in his backyard.
That’s actually closer to the literal meaning of this.
Normally when you dig in the ground, you might find a treasure—
that’s hitting pay dirt.
But here, he won this role in the TV show Family Ties, which is pretty old,
but it became a top-ranked TV comedy.
What was next for him?
Next up was a starring role in Back to the Future,
the award-winning film that would catapult the young actor to widespread fame.
We have a really interesting word here—the word catapult.
Now, what exactly is a catapult?
Well, it’s a type of device that throws rocks.
You’ve probably seen small catapults before that children can hold in their hands,
pull a rock back, and make it go far.
Or there are large catapults as well.
But here in this situation, the meaning is that something is happening very, very quickly.
A lot of times we use this to talk about a career.
Yeah, you could say:
Her ability to make paintings catapulted her to international fame.
So you’re moving from one position to another very quickly—
and normally moving forward in some way.
And we also read this widespread—widespread fame.
Widespread means covering a large area.
That’s right. For example:
There was widespread support of the proposal.
What we read on here:
While in his 20s, Fox completed seven seasons of Family Ties,

Typically, it’s a feeling, right?
That’s right. If you feel on top of the world,
it means that you are really, really happy
and you feel very proud of yourself.
Here’s how you could use on top of the world in a sentence:
After getting the award, he felt like he was on top of the world.
There’s also this word here—tremors.
It’s a lot like the word to tremble or to shake.
But what are tremors?
Okay, so a tremor is an involuntary shaking or quivering.
Now, if something is involuntary, it means you aren’t doing it on purpose.
So this is when a part of your body shakes,
but you’re not making it do that.
Oh, sometimes a stroke could cause tremors.
We often use the word tremors for earthquakes as well.
You could say: After the big earthquake,
the town experienced tremors for several days.
That’s right. So we hear more about Michael’s story:
The young actor was only 29
when his doctor informed him that he had Parkinson’s disease—or PD.
Now, 29 is really young in general
to find out that you have a serious disease.
We see here that Parkinson’s disease is a movement disorder,
and this is something that affects your nervous system.
And the thing about Parkinson’s is that it gets worse over time.
Sometimes we call these neurodegenerative diseases.
It just means it’s hard to move,
and your nerves and muscles break down.
But what happened to Michael?
Well, until three more doctors confirmed the diagnosis,
Fox refused to believe that he had a disease
that typically strikes senior adults.
So this was unexpected.
We learned about diagnosis in our Language Lab, didn’t we?
That’s right. We also see here that he refused to believe something.
What does this mean, John?
If you refuse to believe something,
it means you do not accept a fact or a piece of information.
A lot of times we use the phrase refuse to believe something
when we’re talking about a person
believing something about themselves.
Like, for example: He refused to believe he was wrong.
He just couldn’t accept it.
And what Michael couldn’t believe here
was that he had a disease,
because this disease usually affects people
who are much older.
It’s usually not something had by someone who is only 29 years old.
Yeah. There’s an interesting verb our author uses here—
a disease that strikes senior adults.
That word strike means to move quickly and hit.
So sometimes we use that for sicknesses, or disasters,
or other bad things—they strike.
This comes from the idea of lightning striking.
When lightning strikes, it’s very, very quick,
and nobody knows when or where it’s going to strike or hit.
So when a disease strikes someone,
it usually is that way as well—
you don’t know where or when it is going to strike.
All right, friends, we have more to learn right now.
So let’s get into our next reading.

Incredible as it may seem,
he managed to keep his condition under wraps
for the next seven years,
while still starring in movies and TV shows.
But by 1998,
he could no longer conceal it.
He revealed his diagnosis,
indicating that he would be stepping away from acting
to focus on increasing the public’s knowledge of the disease.
今天的 Usage Tip 是：形容詞或副詞 + as + 主詞 + 動詞 的句型。

And then, he was able to keep this disease under wraps.
This means that you’re keeping something a secret and not revealing it to anyone.
Often, a wrap is a piece of cloth you might put over a wound.
So if you’re hiding something, you’re keeping it "under the wraps."
You can say:
We got engaged, but my wife and I kept it under wraps for a few weeks before telling all our friends.
Okay, now—this disease was kept under wraps for seven years.
So he was able to continue starring in TV shows and movies.
But by 1998, he could no longer conceal it.
Now we have another great word here: conceal.
This is very similar to the phrase under wraps.
But what does conceal mean, John?
To conceal something means to keep it hidden or to hide it.
Sometimes, you might conceal the truth.
That’s right. For example:
The little boy concealed something behind his back.
Have you ever seen a child do that before?
They are concealing something so that you can’t see it.
So we find out here that Michael wasn’t able to hide the fact
that he had this disease anymore.
So what did he do?
He revealed his diagnosis.
Now, reveal is the opposite of conceal.
Instead of concealing something, you might reveal—or show—it.
And diagnosis means what the doctors have told you about your disease.
We also read here:
This is indicating that he would be stepping away from acting to focus on something.
That’s right. Let’s look at this phrase: to step away from something.
If you decide to step away from something,
it means that you are choosing not to be involved with it anymore.
You could step away from a relationship or from a certain role in your job as well.
You could say:
The dad stepped away from trying to chase his career to spend more time with his kids.
Friends, have you ever had to step away from something?
This was probably a very hard decision for Michael J. Fox.
But he says he would focus on something new.
That’s right. Now he is going to focus on increasing the public’s knowledge of the disease.
We’re going to talk a little bit more about what that means in the next section, friends.
But what is he trying to do here?
It means that he is trying to help people know about this disease
and how it affects others.
There’s a phrase we often use when talking about increasing public knowledge of something,
and that phrase is raising awareness.
When you raise awareness, it means you help people understand that something is going on.
So Michael J. Fox is raising awareness of the issue of Parkinson’s.
That’s right!

It was really hard for his family.
However, he used the opportunity to turn his hobby into a business.
Now he’s doing better than ever.
Mmm, the phrase could also be used to talk about a bigger organization...
A new CEO might take a struggling company and turn it around.
He’s taking lemons and turning them into lemonade.
So remember, when life gives you something sour,
add some sweetness, man—turn it into something great!

All right, it comes from the Latin word credere, meaning "to believe."
So if someone or something is credible,
it means they are trustworthy, believable, and you listen to them.
That’s right. Here’s an example of how you could use the word credible in a sentence:
She gave us information in the meeting,
but I’m afraid her sources were not credible.
So if something is not credible,
it usually means that it’s not true or not trustworthy.
You’ll see this root word cred in other places.
For example, a credit card is one where people trust you—
they allow you to spend money you might not currently have.
That’s credit.
Or if something is incredible,
it means it cannot be believed—it’s just too much!
We also read here that
this foundation has raised nearly two billion dollars. Wow!
That’s a lot of money.
We see here that Fox has never shied away from being honest.
Now we see this phrase: shied away from—
and this is a good one for you to know, friends.
If you shy away from something,
it means that you try to avoid it due to nervousness, fear,

You’ve seen shy as an adjective before, right?

I always think about horses when I think about shying away.
A horse might often shy away—or move quickly away in fear—from a loud noise.

We read that he approaches Parkinson’s disease with optimism.
Optimism means having a positive outlook or attitude.
It’s a great thing to have!
That’s right. For example,
people who are very optimistic—or who have optimism—
are very good to be around.
