Hello everyone, welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Garrett, and thanks for joining us. Today, we have our E-Report.
That’s right! I’m here with Esther, and we’re talking about Moon Cave, right?
Moon Cave.
These two words—moon and cave—don’t usually go together.
The moon is a light you see in the sky,
and a cave is a piece of land that people can go into sometimes.
Yeah, a cave is really just a hole, sometimes in a mountain, sometimes in the ground.
And this place we’re going to today is called Moon Cave—that’s its name.
I’m curious. I want to know why it’s called Moon Cave.
But first, we need to go to our Find-It Question:
Our question is: What can you see in the left room of Moon Cave?
What can you see in the left room of Moon Cave?
Well friends, the answer will be in our lesson today—if you haven’t been there yourself.
Now listen carefully, and let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our keywords.
今天介紹的是月洞遊憩區,它位於臺灣東岸的花蓮縣。
Moon Cave is in Hualien County, on the east coast of Taiwan.
名詞 coast 就是「海岸」。
說到為何取名為月洞,
也有可能是因為以前洞穴裡有一個洞,讓月光照了進來。
It may be because there used to be a hole in the cave
that allowed moonlight to shine into it.
名詞 hole 就是「洞」。
月洞裡面又黑又冷,全年溫度都在攝氏 20 度左右。
The temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius all year round.
名詞 degree 就是「度數」。
你會看到從洞穴頂部垂吊而下、又長又尖的岩石。
You’ll see long, pointed rocks that hang down from the ceiling.
名詞 ceiling 就是「頂部」或「天花板」。
它裡面有一個比較大的洞穴,以擁有數千隻蝙蝠而聞名。
It’s known for having thousands of bats.
名詞 bat 就是「蝙蝠」。
白天的時候蝙蝠會倒吊著休息。
They hang upside down from the ceiling during the day.
副詞 upside down 就是「上下顛倒的」。
Hi friends, welcome to E-Report. My name is Campbell.
I’m Gabe.
And I’m Anne Marie.
Today we’re in Hualien County, exploring a place called Moon Cave.
This should be interesting! I heard there’s a special animal that lives in this cave.
Animal? I hope it’s not too scary for my girls.
Yeah, I hope my girls will be okay too.
I have a feeling my boys are gonna love it.
Well, there’s only one way to find out—let’s go get our families and go in!
Moon Cave, or “Yue Dong,” is a natural cave in Hualien County, on the east coast of Taiwan.
There is a river inside the cave.
The water level of the river goes up and down with the tides, because of the moon’s pull.
When the tide is high, the river inside the cave rises.
When the tide is low, the water level drops.
This happens more during the full moon(滿月)and new moon(新月).
Some people say this is why the cave is called Moon Cave.
Others say it’s called Moon Cave because there used to be a hole in the cave
that allowed moonlight to shine into the cave.
You can reach Moon Cave by hiking along trails with beautiful views of trees and rivers.
People come here to hike, take photos, and enjoy nature.
We found out that Moon Cave is in Hualien County. That’s in Taiwan, and it’s on the east coast.
Yes, on the east coast, where there is a lot of beautiful nature to see.
You can find this cave there.
The coast is the area of land that is right by the water,
and this is on the eastern part—so if you look on a map, it will be on your right-hand side.
While here, there is a river in the cave, and the water goes up and down with the tides.
Tides are when the ocean water rises and falls throughout the day.
This is partially because of the moon.
And we learned that the water goes up and down more during the full moon and new moon.
That could be why the cave is called Moon Cave.
The water in it is affected by the moon.
Or, people might think it’s called Moon Cave because there used to be a hole in the cave—
just like a cave is a hole in the ground or under the ground.
A hole is something that is missing—it’s cut out of the rock.
Light from the moon would shine through that hole, showing you the moon.
Let’s go to Sonya now.
月洞名稱的由來可能是因為以前洞穴頂上有個洞,而月光可從那個洞照射進來。
Light from the moon would shine through it.
情態助動詞 would 是 will 的過去式。
舉例:He said he would call back later.(他說他稍後會回電話。)
Would 也可用在客氣的詢問,與過去式無關。
舉例:Would you like a cup of coffee?(你想來杯咖啡嗎?)
Would 也可以表示願望:
I wish they would stay longer.(我希望他們能待久一點。)
Thank you, Sonya.
So this cave is called Moon Cave,
and there are a couple of reasons as to why it might have that name.
Now let’s go to the next part of our lesson.
All right, so I just went in and talked to the tour guide inside the cave.
We’re going to ride a boat inside the cave,
but the boat can only sit a few people at a time,
so we’ll need to split up.
Okay, well—Campbell, why don’t you take your family first,
and then Gabe can take his family,
and me and my family will go last.
Sounds good.
Then we can share our experiences together afterward.
Sounds great! Hey, Changs, let’s go!
Alright guys, ready?
Okay, careful getting into the boat, everybody.
Daddy, I’m scared.
It’s okay, it’s okay.
Mommy and Daddy are here—you’re safe. Let’s go.
Oh, this looks fun, guys!
There’s the boat. Now remember to always stay seated,
and don’t ever take off your life jacket.
That’s right, buddy.
Okay, you ready?
You guys ready? Okay, let’s go!
Whoa, it’s dark in here.
Let’s hold hands tightly. Family, are you ready to explore?
Let’s go!
Inside Moon Cave, it is cool and dark.
The temperature inside the cave is about 20 degrees Celsius all year round.
When you enter the cave, you will be guided into a boat.
Once everyone is seated, a tour guide will sail the boat into the cave.
The cave is filled with wonders waiting for you to discover.
As you shine lights on the walls, you’ll see long, pointed rocks that hang down from the ceiling.
They look like icicles.
They add to the mystery of the cave.
There are also other things inside the cave as well.
For example, there are old birds’ nests and fish heads that have turned into fossils over time.
Every turn reveals something new and exciting.
This makes your visit to Moon Cave a truly memorable adventure.
What does it look like inside this cave?
Well, we learn that it is cool and dark.
It is cool and dark in most caves, and that is true in Moon Cave.
The temperature is about 20 degrees Celsius all year round.
Right, and temperature is how hot or cold something is.
We use the word Celsius to tell us what degree, or how hot or cold it is.
The degree is that number that we use.
To enter this cave, you ride in a boat on top of that river.
As you look around, you’ll see long, pointed rocks that hang down from the ceiling.
Right, the ceiling is the top of where you are.
If you are in a room, then there is a ceiling above your head.
That’s right. These rocks look like icicles.
Icicles are pieces of ice that hang down from things during the winter in some places.
But in Moon Cave, these are not icicles—they’re pieces of rock!
And we learn that there are many interesting things to see in the cave.
Every time you turn, every turn shows you something new and exciting.
And that makes your visit to Moon Cave a wonderful experience.
You know, many of our teachers went with their families, and they all had a great time.
It was nice and cool, even though the temperature outside was very hot.
It sure looked great!
Well friends, it’s time now for us to take a quick break.
Don’t worry—we’ll be right back just after this.
Let’s Talk in English—ten minutes every day!
Testa Wave, welcome back!
Today, we’re talking about Moon Cave.
Earlier, we heard the phrases full moon and new moon.
Full moon is when you see all of the moon.
Garrett, can you tell us—what is a new moon?
Well, when there’s a new moon, you can’t see anything, actually.
The light shining off of the moon—it’s not there.
All throughout the month, the amount of the moon that you can see with that light changes, right?
During the new moon, the stars shine the brightest—
or you can see the stars the clearest during that time.
Let’s keep watching.
Inside Moon Cave, there are two main caverns(洞室).
The one on the right is smaller and has lots of interesting rock shapes.
The one on the left is much larger and is known for having thousands of bats(蝙蝠).
These bats live high up in the cave and hang upside down from the ceiling during the day.
At night, they leave the cave and fly around searching for food.
Some people fear bats, but the bats are not dangerous.
They eat insects and help keep the cave clean.
Seeing the bats can be an exciting part of exploring Moon Cave.
Hey, welcome back!
Thanks, that was quite the adventure!
The cave was nice and cold, but my girls were a little bit afraid because it was so dark at first.
But they were really excited once they saw the bats.
Yeah, my girls were really nervous about being in the dark too, and the bats kind of scared them.
But after they got used to it, they thought it was pretty neat.
It was really cool how the inside of the cave felt like another world.
You know, my boys were scared of the bats at first, and then later,
one of them asked if we could keep one as a pet.
I said, “Ask your mom.”
It’s amazing how a place so dark and full of mystery can hold so much beauty.
It reminds me that if we step outside our comfort zone,
we can be open to having all kinds of new experiences.
Definitely! And I’m glad that we got to experience that bat cave together.
Well friends, thanks for joining us for today’s fun adventure inside Moon Cave.
I hope you enjoyed it!
Maybe one day, you can come and visit Moon Cave with your family.
We’ll see you next time for our next fun E-Report adventure.
Bye-bye! Bye-bye!
We learned that in Moon Cave there are two rooms.
That’s right. These are not rooms like the rooms in your house,
but big spaces inside the cave.
The one on the right is smaller and has lots of interesting rock shapes.
Right, this means that the rocks are seen in many interesting and fun shapes.
And that leads us to the answer to today’s Find-It Question:
Our question is: What can you see in the left room of Moon Cave?
You can see thousands of bats.
Bats are animals that can fly.
Besides their wings, they look a little bit like cats, right?
And they usually hang upside down.
When they spread out their wings, their wings can be very wide.
Some people are afraid of bats, right?
So they hang upside down—with their feet up and their heads down.
At night, these bats leave the cave and fly around searching for food.
Right, because bats are animals that are active at night,
we call these nocturnal animals.
Seeing the bats is an exciting part of visiting Moon Cave.
And… we think seeing Sonia is an exciting part of our lessons!
月洞左邊的洞室有上千隻的蝙蝠。
看到那些蝙蝠是參觀月洞相當刺激的一部分。
Seeing the bats is an exciting part of visiting Moon Cave.
本句中的主詞為動名詞片語 seeing the bats,主詞為一件事,
所以動詞需用單數 is。

學習異文化是旅行中令人興奮的一部分。
Thanks, Sonia!
Boy, I think I would love to see those bats,
but I would not want to get too close—right?
Because there are thousands of bats—lots and lots of bats in that one left room!
Well friends, now it’s time to review today’s keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
Coast
I live in a small town on the coast.
Hole
Look through the hole in the wall.
Degree
It’s forty degrees outside today.
Ceiling
Look up at the ceiling.
Bat
Do you see the bats flying around?
Upside down
The child hung upside down in the tree.
Well friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep on practicing them!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are:
coast
hole
degrees
ceiling
bats
upside down
Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
There’s a ___ in your shirt.
Uh oh, that’s not good.
There’s a hole in your shirt.
Next:
Let’s drive along the ___.
You will have a beautiful ocean view.
Let’s drive along the coast.
Next:
___ are very interesting animals.
These animals sleep during the day.
Bats are very interesting animals.
Next:
The box is ___.
You need to turn it over.
The box is upside down.
Next:
Is that a spider on the ___?
Is that a spider on the ceiling?
Last one:
Water boils at a hundred ___ Celsius.
Water boils at a hundred degrees Celsius.
That was fun!
Be sure to come again for Your Turn!
Oh, is it time again for What’s Next?
It must be! Let’s take a look at some pictures and try to understand the story.
Let’s see if we can guess what the third picture will show next.
Oh, what an interesting picture! We see a bird on the water.
This bird is called a seagull.
These kinds of birds are often found by the coast.
And what else do we see? Hmm… a bottle… a sock?
Why are they floating there?
Oh, I know—they must be trash!
Oh, that’s so sad.
This bird is swimming in water that is filled with trash.
That’s not healthy or safe. Uh oh, what is happening now?
A person is holding a knife and the bird… what will they do to that poor bird?
Don’t kill the bird!
Huh—wait a minute…
The bird has some plastic trash around its neck!
That’s dangerous. Maybe the bird is trapped.
So here’s the big question—what will happen next?
Oh good!
The bird is still alive and free! That’s very good.
I think the people helped the bird.
They must have cut the plastic away from the bird.
Now what are the people doing? They are carrying bags.
What’s inside the bags? Oh, I know—they are cleaning the beach!
Trash and pollution are big problems for nature and animals,
but people can help change that.
What a nice way to end the story!
I was starting to worry about that bird.
Hopefully, that bird will stay away from the trash.
That can be pretty hard though.
Let’s take care of the beaches, friends.
Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next.
Garrett, would you like to visit Moon Cave? Why or why not?
Well, I have visited some caves before, and I thought they were really interesting.
Seeing the different shapes of the rocks was cool,
and it was really fun to ride a boat in a cave.
That’s true! And I’d love to visit Moon Cave, especially during the summer,
because I know it gets very hot in Hualien.
I’d love to see all those bats in that left room.
Oh yeah!
If you go there, be careful. Don’t get too close to the bats, and have a good time!
Well friends, we loved learning with you today,
and we hope to see you back here tomorrow for some review.
That’s right—right here on Let’s Talk in English.
Goodbye!
