That’s the excitement of bodyboarding—

surfing, where you stand up

and you go down the front side of a wave as it carries you.
But today, we’re talking about a special kind of board—
bodyboarding. How does our article begin?
Well, we read here:

All right. When you turn one thing into another,
it means you change its form or its identity.
But can you use that sentence pattern in another sentence?
Yeah, so you could say:
A walk can turn your bad mood into a good mood.
So here we see how this sentence pattern
shows that something becomes something else.
All right, well—what are we talking about here?
We’re talking about bodyboarding, and we read together:
Imagine the excitement
of riding a wave, your body just centimeters above
the rushing water as it carries you toward the shore.
Wow. There’s an adjective in here: rushing.
That means moving quickly.
How can we use that?
So, for example, you could say:
The rushing wind blew
the umbrella out of my hand.
Oftentimes, we use the verb rush
to mean to go somewhere in a hurry.
As well, you could say:
The person rushed from the office to their home.
If you’re always in a rush,
it means you’re in a hurry, right?
That’s right.
So here, we are talking about rushing waves,
and we see here these rushing waves or the rushing water
could carry you toward the shore.
That’s the excitement of bodyboarding—
a sport that’s exhilarating
and offers a rush like no other.
There you see another form of that word: rush.
And here it means something a little different.
Here, the word rush is talking about the feeling of excitement
that you get.
We could say that feeling is exhilarating.
This means it makes someone feel very happy,
excited, or elated.
You could say:
The surfer loved the exhilarating feeling
of riding on giant waves.
Emery, have you ever been surfing before?
I have not. I have really terrible balance.
I have tried wakeboarding before—
I was really bad at that too. How about you?
Okay, I have tried surfing,
but I’m not very good.
But I do love riding on the waves with body surfing,
or this sort of thing here
where you’re actually using some kind of a small board.
But we read here that this is a rush like no other.
We learn that in our usage tip—if something is unique,
you can say it’s like no other.
But we go on to read what many people think about this sport.
Yes, we do. We see here:
Many consider it the ultimate wave-riding sport.
Ultimate is a great word for you to know, friends.
If something is the ultimate,
it means it is the best or most extreme of its kind.
Yeah. Ultimate can also mean the last or the final,
but like you say, when we use it here,
it means that thing is the best.
It’s the top.
You really can’t go past it in terms of quality
or excitement.
Well, I don’t know if this is the ultimate sport—
I need to learn more.
So let’s go to the next section of our reading together:
Riding the Waves
Bodyboarding, sometimes called boogie boarding,
uses a short, soft board to catch the waves.
Unlike surfing, where you stand on the board,
bodyboarding has you lying flat.
This allows you to be closer to the water
and feel more connected to the power of the ocean.
Lying flat also makes bodyboarding easier to learn,
so many people start with it before trying other wave sports.

I’ve always known bodyboarding by a totally different name,
and we read about that together.
We sure do! In this first sentence, we see:
Bodyboarding, sometimes called boogie boarding.
So here we see boogie boarding
is a short, light type of surfboard, and it’s ridden on your stomach.
So I think here,
John, that’s the main difference between traditional surfing
and bodyboarding, or boogie boarding.
Have you ever seen a boogie board?
They’re kind of cute, actually. They’re about this long,
they’re pretty wide, so you can actually fit on top of them,
and they are a lot of fun if you know how to use them.
But did you know, Emery, that
the boogie is actually a dance move where you
kind of twist your foot and your arms?
So the boogie was popularized in the U.S. in the 1970s,
I think, and 60s, by California beach bands.
And that became a global craze—
the boogie and California surfing culture.
So the boogie board went with that culture.
You know, that sounds like a pretty fun fact to me, John.
Yeah, I should talk to Ernest about that.
I’m Bob. Friends, boogie boarding uses a short, soft board
to catch the waves. We learned about surfing, right?
Catching the waves in surfing
means riding on the top of a wave swell,
which is where the wave goes up.
I have also heard people use this phrase to talk
about the act of going surfing.
So you could say:
I’m going to the beach tomorrow to catch some waves.
So this is kind of a term
that can be used in a few different ways.
Absolutely! If you want to sound like a surfer,
just tell your mom:
“Mom, I’m gonna go catch some waves. I’ll see you later.”
But we read here:
Unlike surfing, where you stand on the board,
bodyboarding has you lying flat.
And there’s a fun usage—to stand on, right?
That’s right!
This just means that you put your feet on top of something—
you’re in a standing position.
Yeah. You can use it in all kinds of different ways.
You can use it in a physical way just to say:
I’m standing on the carpet right now.
You could also use it in a more abstract or idea-based way.
You can say:
I really stand on the truth of this message.
Okay, so we read on here:
This allows you to be closer to the water
and feel more connected to the power of the ocean.
Now, you say you’ve been surfing and bodyboarding before, John.
Would you say that
bodyboarding or boogie boarding is a little easier than surfing?
Oh, yeah. Standing up on a surfboard was
really, really hard for me, and I’ve never
done it very successfully.
But a bodyboard is a lot more relaxed.
You’re kind of floating over the top of the water.
There’s another thing that I like to do called body surfing,
where you just have flippers on your feet and no board,
and you kind of just swim like a dolphin with the wave.
That is my favorite,
because my balance isn’t very good.
Okay, very interesting! Well,
we see here that:
This allows you to be closer to the water,
you feel more connected to the power of the ocean.
And:
Lying flat also makes bodyboarding easier to learn.
Well, this is good news for me,
because I know surfing would be way
too hard for me to learn.
But maybe I should try bodyboarding.
Maybe bodyboarding is your new best friend.
It is a lot more relaxed, and you can even use
a bodyboard, or a boogie board,
in other places too. You can practice in the swimming pool,
for example.

This sport can be traced to the ancient Polynesians,
who would slide across the waves on a wooden board.
The modern sport began in the 1970s, when Tom Morey,
an engineer and a surfer, created the first bodyboard.
He called it the boogie board.
Since then, it has gained popularity around the world,
especially in places with superior waves like Hawaii,
California, and Australia.

about what we mean when we say something is “traced to”
or “was traced to” something else.
This means that you are finding or discovering its origins,
or that this thing came from this group of people.
Oh cool! It can also be used as a noun—
the traces of something means what is left over.
So it’s a great word for history.
When you’re tracing something back,
you’re following it back through history.
The ancient Polynesians are a group
from the Pacific Islands.
And we read: who would slide across the waves on a wooden board.
But it’s not an ancient sport anymore, is it?
No, it’s not!
We read here:
The modern sport began in the 1970s
when Tom Morey, an engineer and a surfer,
created the first bodyboard.
So when we’re talking about something being modern,
or being a modern sport in this case,
we’re talking about how something is seen or used today
as opposed to how it used to be.
I see. So this guy Tom was an engineer.
He named his board after the boogie that we learned about.
And I think it’s really interesting that he created
the first bodyboard.
But we also read that he called it the boogie board.
Since then, it has gained popularity around the world.
We’ve heard that term before—to gain popularity.
That means something becomes famous.
But we can use that in all kinds of different ways.
That’s right! If something gains popularity,
it usually means that it wasn’t trendy or popular before,
but over time, it became more and more popular.
For example:
The cartoon character has gained popularity over the years.
Now friends, when something gains popularity,
sometimes it takes a short amount of time,
or sometimes it takes a long amount of time—
as you saw in my example.
So you can add a time word, such as over the years,
when you make a sentence.
Definitely.
And when we’re talking about popularity,
that’s a word that includes the root “pop”—which means people.
Population means the number of people.
Popularity means how much people are talking about it.
And there are other words that use that little bit of “pop” in there
when you’re talking about people.
But where is the boogie board most popular?
So we see here:
Especially in places with superior waves.
Now we see this word superior, friends,
and this is a really good one for you to know.
The word superior means to be higher in standard
or higher in quality.
Sometimes it just means that something is better.
So here in our lesson, we see
that there are some places in the world that have superior,
or better, waves.
These are places like Hawaii, California, and Australia.
Oh, those places are very famous for their waves.
Other things can be superior too.
For example,
maybe you like going to get food at a certain restaurant
because you believe the taste is superior.
Again, there’s that word super in the word superior.
Super means “above the rest”—like Superman, right?
He’s stronger than the others!
So friends,
there’s a lot more to learn about this superior sport
of bodyboarding.

and I have a fun fact for you today!
Did you know that dolphins like to bodyboard?
They often ride waves.

Though, since they are usually unemployed,
they cannot afford a board.
But bodyboarding is pretty fun for people!
And that is today’s Fun Fact!

It’s a fun sport, and it’s certainly popular.
But now, a serious question—are you ready?
I’m ready.
Anne Marie, what dangers might you face while bodyboarding?
Oh, well, I’ve never been bodyboarding before. However,
I can imagine that when you’re out
surfing or bodyboarding on the waves,
there are some dangerous things that
have to do with the ocean—
and maybe even your board.
For example, if you have waves crashing down on you,
you would really have to be a good swimmer
to make sure that you don’t drown.
That’s right. Be very, very careful when you’re out in the ocean.
Sometimes when you’re surfing,
there can be rocks or shallow beach areas,
and if you get caught in a wave,
it can hit you into the bottom of the ocean,
and you could get injured—God forbid!
But friends,
there’s a lot you can do in the ocean.
And the more you practice your English,
the more you’ll be able to talk about these fun activities
with people from different countries
who are sharing in this fun, international sport of bodyboarding.

To start bodyboarding, you need some basic equipment: a bodyboard, fins, and a leash to attach the board to your wrist or ankle.
The bodyboard is usually made from materials like foam, making it easy to control.
Fins help you paddle out to catch waves, and the leash keeps your board from drifting away if you fall.

Well, our lesson lets us know right away, John. We read here:
To start bodyboarding, you need some basic equipment.
So here it is:
A bodyboard, of course, fins, and a leash.
Let’s pause here for a minute to talk about what these things are.
Now first, we see a fin—or fins. These are called swim fins.
The fin on an animal is that part—usually on a fish—that kind of looks like a wing, and it propels the fish through the water.
So similarly, these are something that people can wear on their feet, and they help them go faster or swim better.
That’s right! In California, I had a pair of fins.
Sometimes in English, we call them flippers, especially when talking about a person’s or a dolphin’s fins.
Flippers is a fun word to say too.
But there’s another word here, Anne Marie—a leash. That’s something for a dog usually, right?
Yes! Usually a leash is something that you attach to an animal, like a long rope or a chain. This is to lead the animal or keep it from running away.
So similarly, when you go bodyboarding, you need a leash to attach the bodyboard to your body, so that you don’t lose it.
That’s right, because you’re going to be in the waves and you might drop your board.
You could say this in a sentence:
The surfer was connected to his board by a leash, so he was able to pull the board back to him when he fell off.
Okay, we also see something else in this sentence, friends.
We see here that you need the leash to attach the board to your wrist or your ankle.
Now John, what’s a wrist?
Well, it’s got that silent “w” in there, so don’t get tricked!
The wrist is the joint between your hand and your forearm. So you can move your wrist like that.
That’s right! And the wrist is usually where you wear bracelets.
Some people wear bracelets on their wrists.
Now, we read on here:
The bodyboard is usually made from materials like foam.
Now, what is foam?
Well, foam is a lightweight material, and it’s usually made of rubber or plastic.
That’s right—it’s very light and can float.
Some boats are made of foam because it’s so light.
This makes the bodyboard easy to control.
Now, you saw this sentence pattern in your usage tip today:
...making it easy to control.
How does our lesson continue, John?
Well, we learned a little bit about those fins. We read:
Fins help you paddle out to catch waves, and the leash keeps your board from drifting away if you fall.
Drifting is a great verb, especially when we’re talking about water.
To drift means to slowly move without a definite purpose, often in or under the water from a current.
That’s right. A lot of times when I think of the word drifting, I think of something like a river.
If sticks or leaves fall into the river, they will drift slowly away because of the current.
But we can use “drifting” in other situations as well, friends.
For example:
Clouds can drift across the sky—they move very slowly because of the wind.
It’s a lot of fun to drift in the water when you’re at a pool and you have an inner tube.
You can float and drift—it’s very relaxing.
But did you know that “drift” is not just a verb?
Sometimes we call piled-up snow a snowdrift if it has drifted because of the wind.
That’s a really good point.
Alright friends, let’s continue learning more about bodyboarding right now with our next reading:
Riding the Waves
The fun begins when you learn how to catch a wave.
First, you paddle out to the line-up, the spot where the waves are forming.
As a wave approaches, you kick hard to position your board so the wave can lift and push you forward.
Once the wave picks you up, you’re in for an exhilarating experience—speeding toward the beach.
You’ll get an amazing ride as the ocean carries you.

After paddling my surfboard out to the lineup, I waited anxiously for the first suitable wave.

Let’s talk about bodyboarding, friends.

Remember, catching a wave means getting to the wave to ride on it.
But what do you do first?
Okay, well, as we learned earlier, first you need to get your equipment.
So, you have your bodyboard, you have your fins, and you have the leash to attach the bodyboard to your body.
And now, you can finally have fun.
That’s why we use this phrase: “The fun begins.”
First, you paddle out to the lineup.
Now, paddle is a great word for you to know, friends.
If you paddle, it means you are swimming in a very specific motion.
And as you learned in your Language Lab, we see that word lineup—this is the spot where the waves are forming.
That’s right.
Now, if you’ve ever been to a beach in California, be very careful.
Don’t get in the way of somebody else when you’re at that lineup, because in surfing, respect is really important,
especially when you’re at a local beach where not many tourists go.
So be careful.
We also see a verb here you really need to know: forming.
We read: “The spot where the waves are forming.”
What does that verb mean?
Okay, so if something is forming, it means that things or parts are being brought together and they’re creating something new.
So here, we see that the waves aren’t existing already—water has to come together to create or form these waves. Cool!
You could also say someone is forming a new idea—you’re putting something together.
Well, here the waves are forming, but as a wave approaches, we read:
“You kick hard to position your board so the wave can lift and push you forward.”
Here, position is a verb.
Normally, we see it as a noun, right? The position of something.
But the verb means to move into a specific location.
Here’s an example of how you could use position in a sentence:
“In order to do that exercise, you need to position your body in the right way.”
So as you see here, after the word position, you can put the object—to position something.
Here, we’re talking about positioning your board.
Or you could also position your body.
Yeah! If you don’t know how surfing works, normally I thought that surfing is riding on the top of the wave—but it’s not.
You’re actually sliding down the front of the wave as it grows bigger.
So positioning is really important.
And you’re not just going straight—you’re trying to go along the wave so that you can escape out the side of it and you don’t get hurt.
We also read:
“Once the wave picks you up, you’re in for an exhilarating experience.”
There’s that phrase: “You’re in for something.”
That’s right! If you’re in for something, it means that you are about to experience something—and normally, it’s good.
You could say:
“Wow, you’re in for a treat! He’s a really good cook and he’s making dinner for us.”
But you could also use it in another way. You could say:
“You’re in for a lot of trouble if you keep doing that.”
That’s right.
Now, we also see this word: exhilarating, that we learned yesterday.
As you remember, friends, if something is exhilarating, it means that it is very, very exciting or very thrilling.
You know the word hilarious? If you say something is hilarious, it means it gets you really excited and happy—or laughing.
That word hilarious is connected to the word exhilarating.
It makes you excited, and it usually is a lot of fun.
We finally read here:
“Speeding toward the beach, you’ll get an amazing ride as the ocean carries you.”

Yes! I watched it in a theater—I was blown away by the special effects.
Action movies always have amazing fights and explosions.
So, you were impressed to the point of being blown away.
Does this idiom refer to explosions?
Mmm… if you blow something up, you make it explode.
But being blown away makes me think of a strong wind or something that pushes you back.
Right—a strong or powerful force that moves you over time.
This physical feeling of being blown by the wind also took on the meaning of something that is very exciting or overwhelming.
A very similar idea is to blow someone’s mind.
That means something is so shocking or incredible that your brain can’t even process it.
It’s a little bit of an exaggeration, but saying something blew your mind is pretty common now.
This irregular verb blow has three forms: blow, blew, blown.
And they are all useful! For example:
“Maddy’s mind was blown by her first live concert.”
The experience of being at the concert was very impressive for Maddy.
And the action movie I saw was very impressive to me—
It blew my mind.

For those who get hooked on the sport,
bodyboarding can become a lasting passion.
Experienced riders can do tricks like spins and rolls
using the force of the wave.
Whether you’re catching your first small wave
or challenging yourself with bigger surf,
bodyboarding will keep you coming back for more.
接下來看 passion 這個名詞，意思是「熱情」。

What is a hook?
Okay, well, a hook is an object that is curved at the end,
and usually it is used to hold on to something.
So you might have a hook in your house
where you hang your coat,
or when you go fishing, you might use a hook to catch fish.
Oh, it’s hard to get off a hook if you’re a fish
and you’ve been unfortunate enough to bite the hook.
So if you’re hooked on something —
what does that mean?
Okay, if you’re hooked on something,
it kind of means like you are attached to a hook and you can’t get away.
But the meaning here is that you are strongly attached to something
or strongly attached to someone.
We use this to talk about things that we usually enjoy.
So for example,
you could get hooked on a good book —
you don’t want to stop reading it.
Or in this case, you might get hooked on bodyboarding — cool!
You could get hooked on all kinds of stuff —
good stuff or bad stuff.
You could say:
I am hooked on following the news about this latest fashion trend.
I can’t stop researching it.
Well friends, what are you hooked on?
Hopefully something fun like bodyboarding.
We read here that bodyboarding can become a lasting passion.

But what can experienced riders sometimes do?
Okay, so if you get experienced with bodyboarding,
you can do tricks like spins and rolls,
using the force of the wave.
So what is the difference between a spin and a roll here, John?
Okay, let me see if I can make this clear.
A spin is when you twist in a circle — right, kind of like this —
you’re spinning.
But a roll is when you twist going upside down.
I’m not gonna do a roll here — I would hurt myself —
but a roll would be when you go head over heels.
So you could look it up. These tricks are amazing!
Maybe you have seen a ballerina do a spin in the air, friends.
And maybe you, as a child, have rolled down a hill before —
going head over heels or to the side.
Okay, so these are two kinds of tricks that you can do
if you get experienced with bodyboarding.
And you do these tricks by using the force of the wave.
That’s right.
Both of those words can be used as a verb, right?
To spin or to roll means you’re doing a spin or you’re doing a roll.
That sounds dangerous!
But we read here:
Whether you’re catching your first small wave or challenging yourself with bigger surf, bodyboarding will keep you coming back for more.
There’s the word in there: surf —
and that’s a noun we’ve learned before here at Studio Classroom.
That means the waves or the part of the ocean
where the waves break on the shore.
All right, we also see another great phrase at the end of this sentence, friends:

This is a really good thing for you to know.
Here’s what it means:
It means that there is a thing that you like,
and you return to it again and again.
So for example,
maybe there is a restaurant that you really like,
