Hello, friends!
Welcome to Let’s Talk in English.
My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett.
Today, we’re talking about special days.
And the name of our lesson is: Earth Day, Earth Day!
Yes, friends, it’s a day to talk all about the Earth.
Well, we know every day is a new day to learn something new.
And that is true on the planet Earth, where we all live, right?
Today is a special day — we celebrate our planet Earth.
Many people do special things as they think about this world
and how we can keep this world
a safe, healthy place for us to live in.
On this day, we talk about ways to care for this planet —
to be a little greener, right?
That means that you will use fewer things
so that the Earth will have more of its resources.
Now, let’s go to our reading:
Today is Earth Day.
It began in 1970 to get people to take care of the Earth.
It also started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
On Earth Day, people think about keeping air,
water, and land clean.
This year, Earth Day celebrates its 55th anniversary.
The theme is “Our Power, Our Planet.”
This helps everyone to work together for clean energy.
The goal is to triple the world’s clean energy by 2030.
Thank you, Garrett.
Yes, we heard many terms and words that we’ll talk about later in our lesson.
Now, let’s go to our “Find It!” question.
Our question is:
What is the goal for the world?
What is the goal for the world?
Wow, that’s a big question!
I feel like the answer is many things...
But friends, find the one answer in our lesson today.
And now, let’s go to Sonia, who will teach us our keywords.
這裡說:「今天是世界地球日成立55週年。」
Today is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.
名詞 anniversary 就是「周年紀念日」。
它的成立是為了要幫助制止污染和保護大自然。
It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
名詞 pollution 是「污染」。
大家都應該好好地思考有關維護空氣品質、水源和陸地清潔的事情。
People should think about keeping the air, water, and land clean.
名詞 land 就是「陸地」。
今年世界地球日的主題是什麼?
Julie 回答:是 我們的能源,我們的星球。
It’s “Our Power, Our Planet.”
名詞 power 在這裡指「能源」。
它的目標是要在2030年讓世界的潔淨能源達到三倍。
The goal is to triple the world’s clean energy by 2030.
名詞 goal 就是「目標」。
Happy Earth Day!
Sam: Is that today?
Julie: Yes, today is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.
So it began in 1970?
Yes, it did! It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
That’s important. People should think about keeping the air, water, and land clean.
We need to keep our planet healthy.
We start with Julie telling Sam, “Happy Earth Day!”
When you want to celebrate a special day,
you can use the word “happy” in front of it —
like Happy Birthday or Happy Thanksgiving.
Then, Happy Earth Day sounds kind of like Happy Birthday — that’s kind of funny.
Well, this is a special day that’s been around for quite a while.
But not everyone knows about it. That’s probably why
Sam says, “Is that today?” and Julie tells him, “Yes, it is today.”
She says: Today is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.
Now let’s talk about this word: anniversary.
An anniversary is a date that is remembered or celebrated
because something special happened on that date in a year in the past.
This word is most often used for people who are married.
You have your wedding anniversary every year
on the same date as the day that you got married.
Sam’s math is pretty good,
so he knows that 55 years ago was in 1970.
So he asks, “So Earth Day began in 1970?”
And he’s right! It did begin in 1970.
That was the first Earth Day.
It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
Right! Let’s talk about this word: pollution.
Pollution is the bad air
that comes from gas and other things when it is burned.
Stopping pollution is important,
because when we take in pollution,
it can cause us to get sick.
You’re right! So that is air pollution.
We might also talk about pollution
that’s in our water —
from dumping bad things into rivers and lakes
that we might drink, right?
And we also want to protect nature
or keep nature the way it is.
Sonia, can you help us with the word too?
朱理說地球日的成立是為了要協助制止污染和保護大自然。
It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
本句的 "to" 原本是 "in order to",表示「只為了要……」。
來看例句:
The student studied hard to pass the test.
學生們認真讀書是為了通過考試。
再看一句:
The boys played basketball every day to improve their skills.
男孩們為了增進球技,天天打籃球。
最後一句:
I’m saving up to buy a new scooter.
我為了買一台新機車正在存錢。
Thank you, Sonia.
And Sam agrees with Julie —
Stopping pollution and protecting nature is important.
So he says, “That’s important.”
That’s important.
And that’s today’s Calendar Phrase:
That’s important.
That’s important.
That’s important.
那很重要
Let’s protect nature.
That’s important.
Let’s work for clean energy.
That’s important.
Let’s keep our planet healthy.
That’s important.
Yeah, let’s all work together.
Oh, that’s important too.
Mm-hmm!
That’s important.
That’s important.
那很重要
Sam reminds us that people should think about keeping
Sam reminds us that people should think about keeping
the air, water, and land clean.
That’s what stopping pollution and protecting nature means.
So we talked a little bit about air — what we breathe in —
and water. The land is what we stand on, like the ground outside.
Sometimes, bad pollution can also go into the land, right?
Julie agrees with him.
She says, “We need to keep our planet healthy.”
Yes, keeping the world healthy — keeping planet Earth healthy —
is done by stopping pollution and protecting nature.
It might sound silly to say that —
we often use the word “healthy” when we’re talking about one person or one animal,
but the whole planet, as a system,
can also be healthy or unhealthy,
depending on whether it’s working well or not.
Right, friends, now it’s time to take a break.
Don’t go away — we’ll be right back!
Let’s Talk in English — ten minutes every day!
Welcome back!
Earlier, Sam reminded us that we need to think about keeping the air, water, and land clean.
Garrett, what does "clean" mean here?
Clean means free from all those bad things that create pollution.
So, bad things in the air from cooking things, or releasing harmful substances into it —
right, burning things, the air from factories, burning, and chemicals.
And also, water needs to be clean too, so we can drink it.
Clean things are usually more natural.
Well, friends, let’s get back to our conversation.
Earth Day usually has a theme.
What’s the theme for this year?
It’s "Our Power, Our Planet."
That’s a great theme!
The idea is to have everyone work together for clean energy.
That’s good, yes.
The goal is to triple the world’s clean energy by 2030.
The world will need to work together to make that happen.
And on Earth Day, we should all remember that.
Now, in this section, we heard Sam use the word "theme."
We often hear this word when we talk about stories.
A theme is like a main idea —
something someone wants you to think about in stories.
Themes of friendship, love, and forgiveness are often seen.
You might go and see a special theater play that has a theme of love,
or the theme is Christmas.
Well, Earth Day usually also has a theme.
And Sam wants to ask Julie:
“What’s the theme for Earth Day this year?”
Well, Julie lets him — and us — know:
The theme is "Our Power, Our Planet."
Right, “Our Power, Our Planet.”
Here, power has many different meanings.
The word power is what gives you strength.
You can say:
A person who has a lot of power is very powerful.
Yeah, you might be saying they have the ability to decide things or change things.
And it does mean that here —
but it also refers to electricity —
the kind that powers all the machines around us, right?
Power can also mean energy.
So if the Earth has enough power, enough energy,
then it will lead to a good future.
Right!
And those machines that we use — like our cars and everything around our house —
are not going away.
So, the theme is to have everyone work together for clean energy, right?
Clean energy is energy you get from things like water —
that’s hydroelectric energy, or wind — wind energy.
We don’t want to burn too much coal.
That kind of energy is not clean energy — it creates pollution.
Well, let’s go to Sonia now to learn more about energy.
Judy 說今年的主題是「我們的能源,我們的星球」,用意是要大家齊心努力開發潔淨能源。
The idea is to have everyone work together for clean energy.
名詞 energy 有不同的意思和用法。
來看「能源」這個意思的例句:
Wind energy is one kind of clean energy.
風力是一種潔淨能源。
或是:
How can we use the energy from the sun?
我們如何能使用太陽能?
再來看 energy 當「精力」或「活力」的例句:
Those kids have so much energy.
那些孩子真是精力充沛。
再看一句:
I had no more energy left after the party.
派對結束後,我一點力氣都沒有了。
Thank you, Sonya.
Well, friends, I think it’s time now for us to answer our Find It question.
What is the goal for the world?
To triple the world’s clean energy by 2030.
To triple means to take something and multiply it by three.
So we want to create more kinds of clean energy by 2030.
We want three times the amount of clean energy in just... how many years?
Five years.
That’s not a lot of time — that’s why this is a goal,
or something we are setting as something we want to do.
Right — your goal might be to do well on your next test.
Or if you’re an athlete, your goal might be to join and finish a race, right?
Well, the world will need to work together to meet this goal.
And on Earth Day, we should all remember this goal, right?
And that’s what Julie tells Sam.
Yes — if we want to create clean energy, everyone needs to be part of it.
Maybe we can turn on the air conditioner less,
or find new ways to produce more energy in clean ways —
and not use those dirty ways, right?
Because if we can protect the world well, we will all be more comfortable,
and the air will be cleaner as well.
All right, friends, it’s time now to go back and review our keywords.
Here is our first keyword:
Pollution
The pollution in the city is bad.
Land
He stood on the land next to the water.
Anniversary
It’s our third wedding anniversary.
Power
The lights don’t work — we have no power.
Goal
Her goal is to read four books a week.
Friends, those are today’s keywords. Keep practicing!
And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are: pollution, land, anniversary, power, and goal.
Now, it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one:
When is the school’s...
(This is an important day, and it happens every year.)
Good job:
When is the school’s anniversary?
Next:
The TV needs to work...
(You need this for the TV to turn on.)
That’s correct:
The TV needs power to work.
Next:
The ______ around us is so beautiful.
You’re right:
The land around us is so beautiful.
Next:
What are your ______ for the summer?
(These are important to have.)
You got it:
What are your goals for the summer?
Last one:
How can we stop ______?
Great job:
How can we stop pollution?
Great work, friends!
See you next time for Your Turn!
Happy Earth Day!
Sam: Is that today?
Julie: Yes, today is the 55th anniversary of Earth Day.
So it began in 1970?
It did. It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
That’s important!
People should think about keeping the air, water, and land clean.
We need to keep our planet healthy.
Birthdays usually have a theme — what’s the theme for this year?
It’s “Our Power, Our Planet.”
That’s a great theme!
The idea is to have everyone work together for clean energy.
That’s good, yes.
The goal is to triple the world’s clean energy by 2030.
The world will need to work together to make that happen.
And on Earth Day, we should all remember that.
You know, I do love the Earth.
I’ve lived here my whole life.
The Earth is our home, and we need to take care of it.
That’s right — save the planet!
What’s the theme of this year’s Earth Day?
The theme is “Stop Pollution.”
Oh, stopping pollution is important.
We should work together to make our world a cleaner place.
Mmm... that’s right — stop pollution!
Yeah! Stop air pollution!
Yeah! Stop water pollution!
Yes! Stop all pollution!
Yeah!
Happy birthday to you... and stop noise pollution!
All right, friends.
Let’s try to answer some questions about today’s lesson.
Here’s the first one:
Why did Earth Day start?
We can find the answer in Conversation A:
It started to help stop pollution and protect nature.
Here’s our second question:
Is Earth Day important to you? Why or why not?
Let’s go to our friends and hear their answers:
Is Earth Day important to me? Why or why not?
Yes, Earth Day is important to me. Although it’s important to always think about what you can do to help the environment, it’s nice to have one day to really celebrate and think about how you can help the Earth improve.
Is Earth Day important to me? Why or why not?
Yes, Earth Day is important. It should be important for all of us because we all live on Earth, and we need to help protect it.
So what about you? Is Earth Day important to you? Why or why not?
Is Earth Day important to me? Why or why not?
Well, I think it is important. It reminds us to do things to protect the Earth — even if there are small things like recycling or not wasting food.
What about you? Is Earth Day important for me?
To tell the truth, I don’t need a special day to remind me to take care of our Earth. Every time I go outside, it’s a day where I celebrate Earth Day. I want to always take care of the Earth and keep it clean. Pick that up!
Is Earth Day important to me?
To be honest, I have never celebrated Earth Day before.
But I do think their goal to protect the Earth is important.
We should all work together to keep air, water, and land clean.
It begins with us. It begins with me. Hmm… maybe I should begin by celebrating Earth Day to remind me to take care of the Earth.
Thanks for those answers, friends.
Yes — it’s a big goal to have more clean energy in the world,
but it can help all of us, right?
And we hope you’ll do the activity in our magazine as well —
to change each sentence into a question.
We’ll see you again tomorrow — right here on Let’s Talk in English!
Goodbye!
