Influenza Vaccination Up in Kids, Holds Steady in Adults ， September 18, 2014
Washington, DC — Influenza vaccination coverage for all Americans aged 6 months and older was 46.2% during the 2013 to 2014 season, a percentage point increase from 2012 to 2013, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

There is good and bad news within that statistic, including a 2.3 percentage point rise among children aged 6 months to 17 years, to 58.9%, as well as a near-flatline among adults, holding steady at the same 42% as last year.

"Influenza is constantly evolving as a virus and is unpredictable, which is why we recommend influenza vaccine every year for everyone aged 6 months and older," William Schaffner, MD, professor of preventive medicine in the Division of Health Policy and professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee, said during a press briefing held here today by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases.

"Healthy people are not excluded. Last year was an unfortunate reminder that no one is exempt from flu's most severe consequences. Flu hit young and middle-aged adults hard last year, and just over 100 children died," Dr. Schaffner said.

In an interview with Medscape Medical News before the briefing, CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, said, "The bottom line is everyone 6 months or over should get a flu shot unless they have a contraindication, and there are very few contraindications."
