１９９０年代中期，美國音樂鬼才巨星王子（Prince）為擺脫與華納兄弟的合約義務，開始接連發行專輯。

王子力推他的接下來兩張專輯［Come］和［The Gold Experience］同時發行。

華納接受這兩張專輯，但由於擔心市場飽和，推遲了［The Gold Experience］的發行。

作為報復，Prince開始在公開露面時臉上寫著「奴隸」二字。

 

１９９５年９月，王子推出第１７張錄音室大碟〔The Gold Experience／金色體驗〕（NPG／Warner Bros.）

專輯中的歌曲由王子譜寫(除兩首歌曲與他人合寫),編曲,製作。

這張專輯已他當時的藝名掛名──一個無法發音的符號（出現在專輯封面上），也被稱為「愛情符號」。

由王子譜寫，並製作成一首R&B／靈魂抒情曲，不過明尼阿波利斯音樂家Ricky Peterson 也參與聯合製作和編曲，並提供額外的鍵盤手。

［I Hate U／我恨你］悠長，速度悠緩，

王子以假音與真音輪流交換演唱，充滿戲劇性．

最後以一段簡短卻動聽的吉他獨奏結束整首歌，將歌曲推向高潮。

 

美國演員／模特兒／歌手 Carmen Electra說王子告訴她這首歌是關於她的：

我和一個男人約會過——我沒和這個人上過床——王子發現了。

他說：“我寫了這首歌是關於妳的”，然後他播放了《I Hate U》。
