１９８６年６月３０日，美國樂壇女王瑪丹娜（Madonna）發行第三張大碟〔True Blue／忠實者〕（Sire／Warner Bros.）

這回她首次掌握大權, 除Stephen Bray外, 也找來Patrick Leonard,　與她共同製作。

〔True Blue〕獲得普遍好評, 商業更是成功

登上２８國冠軍　創下當時奪冠紀錄

成為１９８６年全球最暢銷專輯　至今賣出２５００萬張, 為瑪丹娜事業最成功錄音室大碟（精選輯除外）

讓她確定樂壇經典偶像地位。

 

１９８６年３月，瑪丹娜推出首支主打［Live to Tell／告白一生］

 

由瑪丹娜和Patrick Leonard創作，歌詞探討了欺騙、不信任和童年傷痛。

這首歌最初由Patrick Leonard構思，作為派拉蒙電影《Fire with Fire》（1986）配樂的伴奏，但被派拉蒙否決，因為他們認為這首歌不適合這部電影。

Leonard隨後將這首歌曲交給瑪丹娜，她決定將其用於由她當時丈夫肖恩潘（Sean Penn）主演的［At Close Range］電影主題曲。

瑪丹娜創作歌詞，構思一段橋段和一些自己的旋律，並與Leonard共同製作成一首流行抒情曲，

編曲帶有一股懺悔的神秘性，在緩慢的速度中，瑪丹娜娓娓演繹這首內省的歌曲．

［Live to Tell］是她專輯［True Blue］中的一大亮點。

在回顧性評論中，這首歌經常被認為是她最優秀的抒情歌曲之一。
