新聞英文的語態雖然以主動居多，但在句中動作行為者不明確或不重要時，還是用被動語態比較清楚，而且易於銜接上下文，因此被動語態還是可以表達特定的功能，我們在翻譯上也需要瞭解中英文對於被動語態用法的差異。在中文裡的被動語態比英文要少很多，因為中文許多被動的概念其實是用主動的形式來表達，所以翻譯英文被動語態時不妨先考慮是否可改成中文的主動形式。而一般人在翻譯英文被動語態時最常用「被」字來表示，但實際上我們還有許多其它的方式來翻譯，包括譯成主動語態或是使用「據」、「受」、「給」、「遭」、「讓」、「承」、「由」、「蒙」、「獲」、「挨」、「予」、「為…所」等字也可譯成被動語態。例句如下:

Chinese-designed PCs were introduced to expand the product line and Bollywood stars hired to pump up the brand. (Time)

引進中國設計的個人電腦以擴大產品線，並聘請寶萊塢明星為品牌造勢。

說明: 此句英文雖是被動語態，但譯成中文卻成主動語態。原文中出現兩個被動語態were introduced 和(were) hired，其中hired前的be動詞were被省略掉。而譯文可將此兩個被動語態都譯成主動語態。 

The group said that Li was reported to be in good physical and psychological condition, but that he had expressed a wish not to speak to media. (AP)

該團體表示據報導李民英的身心狀況良好，但他不願意面對媒體。

說明: 該句中文的被動語態是以「據」來表示。 

The PLA has been criticized for its lack of transparency about its buildup. (AP)

解放軍向來因擴充軍備不夠透明而遭受批評。

說明: 該句中文的被動語態是以「遭受」來表示。 

Scores of villagers, even elderly ones, were taken away by police after being beaten. (AP)

許多村民，甚至連老人在內都遭警察毆打後給帶走了。

說明: 該句中文的被動語態是以「遭」和「給」來表示。 

All the sites are free and are supported by advertising and sales of data to companies such as limousine services. (Washington Post)

所有的網址都免費，是由廣告和出售資料給像禮車服務這類的公司所資助。說明: 該句中文的被動語態是以「由」來表示。 

An atmosphere of moral rigidity governs much of campus life. (Time)

校園生活大多受到嚴格的道德氛圍所控制。

說明: 在符合中文語法習慣的情況下，英文句的主動語態也可譯成中文句的被動語態。
