菱形奴草是一年生的寄生性植物，寄生於殼斗科植物的根部生長，通常於8-9月開始從殼斗科樹木的根部萌芽。

靠著寄生的栲科植物根部來取得所需的養分，寄生多年後，寄主會枯萎。一旦選定寄生樹就跟定一輩子，只要離開那棵樹就活不成，所以也不要想自行栽種喔！目前由研究中心全力保育，中心呼籲山友運氣好瞧見奴草芳蹤觀察植物世界奧妙就好，切勿採摘破壞。

菱形奴草發現了八十多年, 一般認為僅見於臺灣南投縣魚池鄉蓮華池, 2004年10月22日新竹林區管理處國家森林解說志工謝永康、鍾明均及中興大學植物系蕭淑娟副教授於桃園縣復興鄉東眼山國家森林遊樂區發現了這種植物, 為菱形奴草的第二個生境點。
