1. inaugurate
Definition: to introduce (someone, such as a newly elected official) into a job or position with a formal ceremony
Example: They inaugurated the new headquarters with a brief ceremony.
2. venturesome
Definition: willing to take risks
Example: The first solo pilot to undertake the venturesome crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by air.
3. bustle
Definition: to move or go in a busy or hurried way
Example: She bustled around the kitchen getting ready for dinner guests.
4. vie
Definition: to compete with others in an attempt to get or win something
Example: They are vying to win the championship for the third year in a row.
5. embark
Definition: to begin a journey especially on a ship or airplane
Example: Millions of Europeans embarked for America in the late 19th century.
6. imperative
Definition: expressing a command in a forceful and confident way
Example: “Eat your spinach!” is an imperative sentence.
7. cadence
Definition: a regular beat or rhythm
Example: Oars moved back and forth in smooth cadence.
8. preoccupy
Definition: to be thought about or worried about by (someone) very often or constantly
Example: The question of life after death has preoccupied many philosophers.
9. thug
Definition: a violent criminal
Example: He was beaten and robbed by street thugs.
10. rival
Definition: a person or thing that tries to defeat or be more successful than another
Example: The teams have been longtime rivals.
11. rhetorical
Definition: of, relating to, or concerned with the art of speaking or writing formally and effectively especially as a way to persuade or influence people
Example: My question was rhetorical. I wasn't really expecting an answer.
12. aesthetic
Definition: of or relating to art or beauty
Example: There are practical as well as aesthetic reasons for planting trees.
13. unleash
Definition: to allow or cause (something very powerful) to happen suddenly
Example: The storm unleashed its fury.
14. penance
Definition: something that you do or are given to do in order to show that you are sad or sorry about doing something wrong
Example: He did charitable work as a penance.
15. submission
Definition: something that is submitted
Example: I'm preparing the results of my study for submission to a medical journal.
16. assault
Definition: a violent physical attack
Example: She was injured in a brutal assault.
17. splitter
Definition: a device that divides or splits something
Example: A three-way phone line splitter.
18. adherence
Definition: the act of doing what is required by a rule, belief, etc.
Example: Adherence to convention requires that the couple send out formal wedding invitations.
19. entrench
Definition: to place (someone or something) in a very strong position that cannot easily be changed
Example: Officials who have tried to entrench themselves in office.
20. counsel
Definition: advice given to someone
Example: The student sought counsel from her teacher.
21. laboriously
Definition: requiring a lot of time and effort
Example: The volunteers have been commendably laborious in their cleanup of the beach.
22. ephemeral
Definition: lasting a very short time
Example: The autumnal blaze of colors is always to be treasured, all the more so because it is so ephemeral.
23. formidable
Definition: very powerful or strong
Example: He has mastered a formidable amount of material.
24. eloquence
Definition: the ability to speak or write well and in an effective way
Example: She spoke with eloquence on the need for better schools.
25. conspiracy
Definition: a secret plan made by two or more people to do something that is harmful or illegal
Example: The CIA uncovered a conspiracy against the government.
