歌詞當中的「Rio Grande」格蘭德河是位於北美南部的河流，全長3034公里，是美國第五長的河流，並作為美墨邊境長約2000公里，起源於科羅拉多州的聖胡安山脈，先往西再從北至南把新墨西哥州分為兩份，並在艾爾帕索開始成為美墨的界河，一直到注入墨西哥灣為止。

歌曲所描寫的背景應是十九世紀末的「美墨戰爭」（又稱墨西哥戰爭）。
