ADDITIONAL NOTES IN CLASS:

 

VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

insult

definition: 1. to do or say something that is offensive to (someone) 2.to do or say something that shows a lack of respect for (someone)

use the word in a sentence: She felt they had insulted her by repeatedly ignoring her questions.

root: il, in- in, into  ex: illuminate, innovation, inspection

dragging

definition: to pull (someone or something that is heavy or difficult to move)

use the word in a sentence: She dragged one of the other tables over to ours.

evaporate

definition: to change from a liquid into a gas

use the word in a sentence: The heat evaporated the water.

root: e- out, away   ex: eloquent, emissary, eject

object

definition: a thing that you can see and touch and that is not alive

use the word in a sentence: There were three objects in the box: a comb, a pen, and a button.

root: ob, op- in the way, against  ex: object, opposition, obscure

decipher

definition:  to find the meaning of (something that is difficult to read or understand)

use the word in a sentence: I couldn't decipher his sloppy handwriting.

root: de- reduce  ex: dethrone, debug

coagulate

definition:  if a liquid coagulates or something coagulates it, it becomes thick and almost solid

use the word in a sentence: The heat will coagulate the egg mixture .

revoke

definition: to officially cancel the power or effect of (something, such as a law, license, agreement, etc.) : to make (something) not valid

use the word in a sentence: The judge revoked her driver's license.

sleeveless

definition: the part of a shirt, jacket, etc., that covers all or part of your arm

use the word in a sentence: The joint is covered with a metal sleeve.

capitalize 

definition: to write a letter of the alphabet using a CAPITAL letter

definition:  

1.a part of a tube or pipe that opens and shuts like a door to control the flow of liquid, gas, air etc passing through it 2. the part on a TRUMPET(1) or similar musical instrument that you press to change the sound of the note

recreational

definition: done for enjoyment

use the word in a sentence: Marijuana is a recreational drug.

aerodynamic

definition: a science that studies the movement of air and the way that objects (such as airplanes or cars) move through air

use the word in a sentence: An aerodynamic car, design etc uses the principles of aerodynamics to achieve high speed or low use of petrol.  

dull

definition: 1. not exciting or interesting 2. having an edge or point that is not sharpof a sound 3. not clear and loud

use the word in a sentence: the dull knife just bounced off the skin of the tomato without cutting it.

reference

definition: something you say or write that mentions another person or thing 

use the word in a sentence: The book references many other authors who have written on this topic.

homonym

definition: a word that is spelt the same and sounds the same as another, but is different in meaning or origin. The noun 'bear' and the verb 'bear' are homonyms

leash

definition: a piece of rope, leather etc fastened to a dog's collar in order to control it 

have sb on a leash -humorous -to be able to control someone

use the word in a sentence: Jerry ' s wife has him on a tight leash 

 

 

 

privilege

definition: 1. a right or benefit that is given to some people and not to others 2. a special opportunity to do something that makes you proud

use the word in a sentence: Good health care should be a right and not a privilege.

revealing

definition:  giving information about something that was not known before

use the word in a sentence: The book is a revealing account of being part of a gang.

circumvent

definition:  to manage to get around especially by ingenuity or stratagem 

use the word in a sentence:

We circumvented the problem by using a different program.

clamber  

definition:   to climb awkwardly (as by scrambling) 

use the word in a sentence: The children clambered over the rocks.

refuse

definition:  to say that you will not accept (something, such as a gift or offer)

use the word in a sentence: When they offered me the money, I couldn't refuse.

root: re- again, back, backward  ex: rebound, rewind, reaction

unstable

definition: likely to change

use the word in a sentence: the minute we put the books down on the unstable desk, the whole stack went crashing to the floor.

root: un- not, opposite of, lacking     ex: unabridged, unfair, unfriendly

concept

definition: an idea of what something is or how it works

use the word in a sentence: She is familiar with basic concepts of psychology.

root: con- with, jointly   ex: concur, contemporary , convention

predator

definition: an animal that lives by killing and eating other animals : an animal that preys on other animals

use the word in a sentence: The population of rabbits is controlled by natural predators.

root: pre- earlier, before, in front of   ex: prepare, prediction. preamble

 

 

 

 

enchanted

definition:  to attract and hold the attention of (someone) by being interesting, pretty, etc.

use the word in a sentence: The book has enchanted children for almost a century.

root: en/em into ,cover ex: engorge, empathy, empower
