ADDITIONAL NOTES IN CLASS:

  1. 1.      primary, prime time  prim- main, basic
  2. 2.      sustainable: involving methods that do not completely use up or destroy natural resources

VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

obligation

definition: something that you must do because of a law, rule, promise, etc.

use the word in a sentence: She believes that all people have a moral obligation to defend human rights.

root: ob, op- in the way, against  ex: object, opposition, obscure

instinctively

definition: based on feelings or desires that do not come from thinking or learning

use the word in a sentence: Cats have an instinctive desire to hunt.

root: in-in, into  ex: illuminate, innovation, inspection

suspicion

definition: a feeling that someone is possibly guilty of a crime or of doing something wrong

use the word in a sentence: There has long been a suspicion that the painting is a fake.

primate

definition:  any member of the group of animals that includes human beings, apes, and monkeys/  the highest ranking priest in a particular country or area in some Christian churches 

use the word in a sentence: primate included man, together with the apes and monkeys.

root: prim- first  ex: primary, primer, primitive

suburb

definition: a town or other area where people live in houses near a larger city

use the word in a sentence: My parents lived in suburb.

root: sub- under, lower than, inferior to  ex: submarine, submerge, substandard

artifact

definition:  a simple object (such as a tool or weapon) that was made by people in the past

use the word in a sentence: The caves contained many prehistoric artifacts.

 

 

rainfall

definition:  the amount of rain that falls on a particular area

use the word in a sentence: This area has an average annual rainfall of 12 inches.

house

definition:  a structure or shelter in which animals are kept

use the word in a sentence: He made enough noise to wake the whole house.

pharaoh

definition: a ruler of ancient Egypt

use the word in a sentence: like some pharaoh of a third-world country, more interested in building monuments to himself than in creating a future for his people.

cemetery

definition: a place where dead people are buried

use the word in a sentence: many of the soldiers who died in the battle are buried in a cemetery nearby.

complex

definition: a group of buildings, apartments, etc., that are located near each other and used for a particular purpose

use the word in a sentence: She has a complex about her appearance.

settler

definition:  a person who goes to live in a new place where usually there are few or no people

use the word in a sentence: In 1889 Jane Addams, in an effort to provide Chicago's latest wave of settlers with much-needed services, founded the city's first settlement house.

archaeological

definition: a science that deals with past human life and activities by studying the bones, tools, etc., of ancient people

definition: not handled or used

mummy

definition: a body embalmed or treated for burial with 

use the word in a sentence:

antiquity

definition: 1. ancient times 2. very great age

use the word in a sentence: The town dates from antiquity.

remarkable

definition: unusual or surprising : likely to be noticed

use the word in a sentence: Competing in the Olympics is a remarkable achievement.

estimate

definition: to give or form a general idea about the value, size, or cost of (something) : to make an estimate of (something)

use the word in a sentence: They estimated the distance at about three miles.

translucent

definition: not completely clear or transparent but clear enough to allow light to pass through

alabaster

definition:  a white stone that is used to make vases and decorations

restoration

definition: 1.the act or process of returning something to its original condition by repairing it, cleaning it, etc. 2.the act of bringing back something that existed before 3. the act of returning something that was stolen or taken

batter

definition:  to beat with successive blows so as to bruise, shatter, or demolish

unrest

definition: a situation in which many of the people in a country are angry and hold protests or act violently

remains

definition: to be left when the other parts are gone or have been used 1.to be something that still needs to be done, dealt with, etc. 2. to stay in the same place or with the same person or group : to stay after others have gone

blueprint

definition: 1.a photographic print that shows how something (such as a building) will be made 2. a detailed plan of how to do something
