VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

agriculture

definition:  the science or occupation of farming

use the word in a sentence: They cleared the land to use it for agriculture.

root: agr- farming   ex: agribusiness, agrarian

devote

definition: to commit by a solemn act

use the word in a sentence: I conscientiously devote several hours every weekend to playing with my dog.

root: de- reduce, away, down  ex: decelerate,  dethrone

crate

definition: a large wooden or plastic box used for moving things from one place to another

use the word in a sentence: The bear arrived at the zoo in a crate.

splash

definition: of a liquid : to move, fall, or hit something in a noisy or messy way

use the word in a sentence: He dropped the bottle and bleach splashed onto the floor.

companionship

definition:  the good feeling that comes from being with someone else

use the word in a sentence: the widow's pet cats provided her with her only companionship.

root: com- together  ex: commemorate, composition, commune

favorable

definition: a favorable report, comment, or reaction shows that you think that someone or something is good or that you agree with them

cardinal

definition:  very important or basic

use the word in a sentence: Having clean hands is one of the cardinal rules when preparingfood .

definition: showing the effect of grief or anxiety

cargo

definition: the goods or merchandise conveyed in a ship, airplane, or vehicle

carom

definition: a shot in billiards in which the cue ball strikes each of two object balls

definition: a person who has just started learning or doing something

massage

definition:  the action of rubbing or pressing someone's body in a way that helps muscles to relax or reduces pain in muscles and joints

definition:  to cause (someone) to feel very excited or happy

castigate

definition:  to subject to severe punishment, reproof, or criticism

casualty

definition:   a military person lost through death, wounds, injury, sickness, internment, or capture or through being missing in action

irrelevant

definition: not useful or not relating to a particular situation, and therefore not important

cede  

definition:  formal -to give something such as an area of land or a right to a country or person, especially when you are forced to

characteristic

definition: very typical of a particular thing or of someone's character

offensive

definition: very rude or insulting and likely to upset people

chaff

definition: the seed coverings and other debris separated from the seed in threshing grain

use the word in a sentence: Chaffed her about the brightly colored shirt she had received as a gift. 

ambiguous

definition:  capable of being understood in two or more possible senses or ways

use the word in a sentence: We were confused by the ambiguous wording of the message.

concept

definition:  an idea of what something is or how it works

use the word in a sentence: She is familiar with basic concepts of psychology.

keynote

definition: the most important idea or part of something

use the word in a sentence: Humor is the keynote of the play.

chime

definition:  to make a musical and especially a harmonious sound / to be or act in accord 

use the word in a sentence: The music and the mood chimed well together. 

fussy

definition:  requiring or giving close attention to details 

use the word in a sentence: I'm not fussy about where we eat.
