VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

antique

definition: belonging to an earlier period, style, or fashion : old and often valuable use the word in a sentence: That car is an antique.

root: anti- against, opposite  ex: antibody, antiseptic, antisocial

captivating

definition:  to attract and hold the attention of (someone) by being interesting, pretty, etc.

use the word in a sentence: The play has been captivating audiences for years.

root: capt, cept, ceive- take, hold  ex: intercept, captivating, perceive

submerge

definition: to make (someone or something) go under the surface of water or some other liquid : to cover (someone or something) with a liquid

use the word in a sentence: After boiling the broccoli, submerge it in ice water to stop the cooking process.

root: sub- under, lower than, inferior to  ex: submarine, suburb, substandard

invader

definition:  to enter (a place, such as a foreign country) in order to take control by military force

blast

definition:  a mass of air that moves very quickly and forcefully 2. a mass of water, gas, heat, etc., that moves very quickly and forcefully through the air 3. the loud sound made by a horn or a whistle

definition: a person who sees something happen and is able to describe it
