VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

segment

definition: one of the parts into which something can be divided

use the word in a sentence: The railroad track is divided into segments.

root: se- apart  ex: secede, seclude, serum

unison

definition: identity in musical pitch; specifically :  the interval of a perfect prime

use the word in a sentence: the members of the committee are in unison on this point.

root: uni- one, single   ex: unicycle, unilateral, unique

 

disregard

definition:  to ignore (something) or treat (something) as unimportant

use the word in a sentence: lease disregard what I said before.

root: di, s- apart, away   ex: digression, disappear, dissect

strength

definition: the quality or state of being physically strong

use the word in a sentence: I was impressed by his strength.

essential

definition: extremely important and necessary

use the word in a sentence: As a fighter pilot, he knows that good vision is essential.

flawed

definition:  a sudden brief burst of wind. a spell of stormy weather

use the word in a sentence: that crack has flawed the vase to the extent that its value in the antiques market is greatly reduced.

outlet

definition: 1. something that people use to express their emotions or talents

2. a store that sells products made usually by one company and often at reduced prices

3. a television, radio, or publishing company

use the word in a sentence: this road is the only outlet for traffic coming from the racetrack

aggravate

definition: 1. to make (an injury, problem, etc.) more serious or severe2. to make (someone) angry. 3. to annoy or bother (someone)

obsolete

definition: no longer used because something newer exists : replaced by something newer.

significantly

definition:  in a way that is large or important enough to be noticed or have an effect.

outrageously

definition: very bad or wrong in a way that causes anger : too bad to be accepted or allowed.

definition:  a bright, deep purplish-red color

chain  

definition: a series of usually metal links or rings that are connected to each other in a line and used for supporting heavy things, for holding things together, for decoration, etc.

definition: tending to prevent, inhibit, or destroy life.

definition:  a plant that is related to the onion and that has small sections (called cloves) which have a strong taste and smell and are used for flavoring foods.

definition:  to make (something or someone) holy by saying a special prayer

definition: to run away from danger.

definition: having had an existence of many years.

use the word in a sentence: The people in the village still observe the ancient customs of their ancestors.

sanitation

definition: the process of keeping places free from dirt, infection, disease, etc., by removing waste, trash and garbage, by cleaning streets, etc.

sense

definition: one of the five natural powers (touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing) through which you receive information about the world around you

sensation

definition: a particular feeling or effect that your body experiences.

definition: positioned up and down rather than from side to side : going straight up.

definition: to look, feel, or behave like (something)

use the word in a sentence: The model will be used to simulate the effects of an earthquake.

patent

definition: of, relating to, or concerned with patents.

use the word in a sentence: The company settled a patent dispute last year.

definition: 1. to surround (something) 2. to put something around (something) 3. to include (something) with a letter or in a package
