VOCABULARY JOURNAL:

endeavor

definition: to seriously or continually try to do (something)

use the word in a sentence: The school endeavors to teach students to be good citizens.

root: en/em- into, cover   ex: engorge, empathy, empower

activate

definition:  to make active or more active

use the word in a sentence: The camera is activated by pushing a button.

root: a-to, toward, near  ex: accelerate, accessible, approached, admittance

hyperactive

definition: extremely active or too active

use the word in a sentence: The skyrocketing price of oil resulted in a wildly fluctuating, hyperactive stock market.

root: hyper- too much, over, excessive, beyond  ex: hypercritical, hypertension

illusion

definition:  something that looks or seems different from what it is : something that is false or not real but that seems to be true or real

use the word in a sentence: The video game is designed to give the illusion that you are in control of an airplane.

root: ig, il, im, in, ir- not, without  ex: impossible, inappropriate, irresponsible

curriculum

definition: the courses that are taught by a school, college, etc.

use the word in a sentence: The college has a liberal arts curriculum.

root: curr, curs- run   ex: cursive, concurrent, current

persuade

definition: to make someone decide to do something, especially by giving them reasons why they should do it, or asking them many times to do it

use the word in a sentence: I finally managed to persuade her to go out for a drink with me.

province

definition: one of the large areas into which some countries are divided, and which usually has its own local government

use the word in a sentence: Sichuan is China’s most populous province

serve  

definition: to give someone food or drink, especially as part of a meal or in a restaurant, bar etc

governor

definition: the person in charge of governing a country that is under the political control of another country

preserve

definition: to save something or someone from being harmed or destroyed

earl

definition: a man with a high social rank

invert  

definition:  to put something in the opposite position to the one it was in before, especially by turning it upside down

scale  

definition: the size or level lf something, or the amount that something it happening

exposition

definition: a large public event at which you show or sell products, art etc

thermometer

definition: a piece of equipment that measures the temperature of the air, of your body

use the word in a sentence: The thermometer reads 30 degrees.

industry

definition: the production of goods, especially in factories

definition: to move from one country, place, or locality to another

use the word in a sentence: He migrates from New York to Florida each winter.

elaborate

definition: planned or carried out with great care  elaborate precaution

explore

definition:  to look at (something) in a careful way to learn more about it : to study or analyze (something)

use the word in a sentence: Researchers are exploring how language is acquired by children.

significant

definition: large enough to be noticed or have an effect

use the word in a sentence: significant number of customers complained about the service.

submit

definition:  to give (a document, proposal, piece of writing, etc.) to someone so that it can be considered or approved

use the word in a sentence: Candidates interested in the position should submit their résumés to the Office of Human Resources.

striking

definition:  unusual or extreme in a way that attracts attention

use the word in a sentence: The poverty of the city is striking.

eagerly

definition: very excited and interested : feeling a strong and impatient desire to do something or for something

use the word in a sentence: She was eager to get started.

incorporate

definition: to include (something) as part of something else

business : to form into a corporation

use the word in a sentence: This design incorporates the best features of our earlier models.

sophisticated

definition: having or showing a lot of experience and knowledge about the world and about culture, art, literature, etc.
