水手的總教練Mike Hargrove在水手八連勝後退休，官方的說法是：

"My passion has begun to fade.  ......  I've always asked players and coaches to give me their best physically and mentally. I've found that I haven't been able to do that myself. In my head I feel the players deserve more than I can give them right now."（我的熱情開始消逝．．．我總是提醒選手和其他教練不論身心都要全力以赴，但我自己卻再也做不到。我想，比起現階段我所能為他們做的，他們值得更多。)

　因為下臺的時間點實在是太詭異了，於是，就出現了一些，有點匪夷所思的非官方說法．．．

 　「為什麼會這麼突然呢？」我家老闆少見的在實驗室裡討論起棒球來。

　「這很簡單，球隊裡有無法克服的問題啊！」實驗室經理煞有其事地回答。

　「喔？」

　「像是鈴木一朗，大家都知道他們有心結。一朗從去年就一直對日本媒體暗示今年球季結束後他不會和水手續約了，如果水手要把搖錢樹留下來，當然要先把絆腳的石頭拿掉。」

　一朗從05年Hargrove剛接總教練時，因為棒球觀念和文化差異，兩人之間頗有摩擦這件事，在西雅圖一直都是公開的秘密。

　雖然，我個人比較認同水手一壘手Richie Sexson的說法：

"He's been doing this for 35 years, and there are things you miss. When he went home, maybe that hit him. But we are not robots, none of us. We have lives and families. And if he wasn't feeling good about it, we can understand that."（他在待在球場上35年了，這麼長的時間下來總是會錯過些事情。當他回到家，這個念頭也許讓他不好過。我們不是機器人，也有自己的生活和家人。如果他不喜歡這樣的情況，我們都可以理解。）

　但凱阿姨說的不禁讓我想起，一朗在去年的明星賽曾經暗指水手的球隊管理結構有問題（05和06兩個球季是水手隊史上最黑暗的兩年）：

"If there is a problem, we need to notice what creates the problem. The problem usually isn't on the cover. If you are talking about a tree -- if the tree has a problem, you need to look at the root. But you cannot see the root. The mistake is to keep watering the tree. That's not going to solve anything. You need to find where the problem is."（如果有問題，我們必須了解根源在哪裡，這又往往不是在表面就看得到的。如同一棵生病的樹，你必須檢查它的根。因為這不容易辦到，所以人們常常犯了過度澆水的錯誤，而這並不能解決問題，你必須找到哪裡出了錯。）

　然後，又在看起來前景大好的今年季初說：

"...... Something that I've realized since then (the All-Star Game) is that in the United States, the way to solve that problem is to do it by winning. If you lose, the problem gets magnified. But by continuing to win you can overcome that problem. I've kind of given up that part about being able to focus and look at the root in the United States. I realize that's not possible over here."（在明星賽後我開始了解，在美國，想要解決問題就得贏。如果你輸了，那問題就會變得更明顯，但是不斷的勝利能克服它。我有點放棄專注於尋找問題根源的念頭了，因為我明白這在美國是不可能的。）

　我懷疑一朗的翻譯在這裡用的overcome是overwhelm或cover over的意思，而不是常用的getting better，所以言下之意就是問題還在，只是連勝讓大家忽略了問題所在。看起來搖錢樹本人好像還是因為文化差距小有不平的樣子。

　這些流傳在球迷之間的耳語，大概證明了人類是種喜歡把問題複雜化的動物。我想，就算Hargrove退休的真正原因誠如他對媒體所說的是自認已倦勤不能再勝任總教練的工作，在鈴木一朗和他有心結的小道消息亂竄的情況之下，應該是沒有人會相信他就只是累了想休息吧！
