Sea anemones catch small animals that drift along the bottom. This species belongs to the order Actiniaria. Credit: SMARTEX/NHM/NOC Transparent sea cucumbers, pink sea pigs, and bowl-shaped sponges are some of the fascinating animals discovered during a deep-sea expedition to the Abyssal Plains in the Pacific Ocean. A 45-day research expedition to the Clarion Clipperton Zone between Mexico and Hawaii in the eastern Pacific Ocean ended in March. One of the scientists on board the British research vessel James Cook was Thomas Dahlgren, a marine ecologist from the University of Gothenburg and the NORCE research institute. “These areas are the Earth’s least explored. It’s estimated that only one out of ten animal species living down here has been described by science,” he says. This transparent-bodied sea cucumber belongs to the Elpidiidae family and is called ‘unicumber’. You can clearly see its intestines and that it has been eating sediment. We can only guess what the long tail is used for, but probably to be able to swim. Credit: SMARTEX/NHM/NOC The area studied is a part of the Abyssal Plains, which are deep-sea areas at depths of 3,500 to 5,500 meters. Although they make up more than half of the Earth’s surface, there’s very little known about their fascinating animal life. “This is one of very few cases where researchers can be involved in discovering new species and ecosystems in the same way as they did in the 18th century. It’s very exciting,” says Thomas Dahlgren. Abyssal Plains The ocean floor that lies between 3,500 and 5,500 metres deep are called the Abyssal Plains. Despite the name, it’s not an entirely flat landscape. There are plenty of ridges and small seamounts that can rise several hundred metres from the ocean floor, but in most cases, this is not enough to be disclosed on existing maps. The environment on these plains is extremely nutrient poor. The nutrients present are either remainders from hot springs that lie further away, or excreted from the occasional whale cadavers sunk to the bottom. Otherwise, the nutrients originate from the productive sea surface several kilometres up, where only about one percent reach the ocean floor as marine snow. Sea Cucumbers and Glass Sponges The animals living in these deep-sea areas have adapted to a life with very little nutrition. Most feed on organic debris, known as marine snow, falling from the more productive area close to the surface. As a result, this animal population is dominated by filter feeders, such as sponges, and sediment feeders, such as sea cucumbers. “The lack of food causes individuals to live far apart, but the species richness in the area is surprisingly high. We see many exciting specialised adaptations among the animals in these areas,” says Dahlgren. One of the species discovered on the expedition was the pink sea pig, or ‘Barbie Sea Pig’ as it is called in English. It acquired its name because of its pink colour and small feet. Credit: SMARTEX/NHM/NOC Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the research team photographed the deep-sea life and took samples for future studies. One of the species captured on camera was a cup-shaped glass sponge, an animal believed to have the longest lifespan of any creature on Earth. They can live up to 15,000 years. Another species discovered on the expedition was a pink sea pig, a sea cucumber from the genus Amperima. The species moves very slowly with its tube feet across the desolate plains in search of nutrient-rich sediments. The outgrowths on the front end of the underside are remodeled feet used to stuff food into the mouth. “These sea cucumbers were some of the largest animals found on this expedition. They act as ocean floor vacuum cleaners, and specialize in finding sediment that has passed through the least number of stomachs,” says Dahlgren. Threatened by Mining The aim of the expedition was to map the biodiversity of the area, where deep-sea mining of rare metals used in solar panels, electric car batteries, and other green technologies is planned. Several countries and companies are waiting for authorization to extract these metals bound to mineral nodules lying on the ocean floor. The scientists want to find out more about how mining could affect the ecosystem, register existing species, and find out how the ecosystem is organized. “We need to know more about this environment to be able to protect the species living here. Today, 30% of these marine areas in consideration are protected, and we need to know whether this is enough to ensure that these species aren’t at risk of extinction,” says Dahlgren.

Two genes that are unique to humans work together to influence the development of the cerebrum, according to a recent study by researchers at the German Primate Center – Leibniz Institute for Primate Research and the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics. The findings provide strong evidence that these genes jointly contribute to the evolutionary expansion of the human brain. The study reveals a precise interaction between the two genes: one gene increases the proliferation of brain progenitor cells, while the other promotes their transformation into a different type of progenitor cell, one that ultimately gives rise to neurons. This coordinated mechanism is believed to have played a key role in the evolution of the uniquely large and complex human brain. Beyond offering new insights into brain evolution, the research may also shed light on the origins of certain developmental brain disorders and neurological diseases. In the long term, they could contribute to the development of therapeutic approaches for malformations of the brain,” says Nesil Eşiyok, first author of the study. Combining Traditional and Alternative Research Methods Various methods were combined for the study: In addition to animal experiments with mice, alternative methods such as chimpanzee brain organoids were also used. “The remarkable feature of our study is that the results from animal experiments and alternative methods complement each other well and mutually confirm their findings. This not only emphasizes the high significance of our results, but could also help to reduce the need for animal experiments in the future by further developing, refining, and confirming alternative methods,” explains Michael Heide, the study’s lead researcher. A study on vervet monkeys has identified stable social traditions within different groups, particularly in grooming behaviors, indicating that these animals pass on social customs through generations. Males adapt their social behaviors to conform to the norms of new groups, showcasing a form of social conformity among non-human primates. For example, in certain areas, it’s customary to greet everyone you encounter on the street, whereas in other regions, this behavior is not observed. Sometimes, these variations can even be seen between different neighborhoods. Recent research published in the journal iScience has revealed that neighboring groups of vervet monkeys exhibit similarly varied social behaviors and customs. “We report the existence of behavioral traditions of social customs in vervet monkeys that are stable across 9 years,” says Elena Kerjean of the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and Paul Sabatier University in Toulouse, France. The researchers found that such differences in social traditions set up differences in “social atmosphere” that could be passed on from one generation to the next through social learning. Intriguingly, they also found that dispersing males quickly adapted their social style to that of their new group, suggesting that they may experience a phenomenon akin to social conformity driven by peer pressure. Study on Social Behavior and Conformity Kerjean and colleagues including Erica van de Waal and Charlotte Canteloup knew that other animals, like people, follow traditions. But most studies had focused primarily on the presence or absence of traditions such as tool use. They hadn’t explored more subtle, quantitative differences in social behavior that can lead to important differences in a group’s social atmosphere. Credit: Charlotte Canteloup To explore further in the new study, the researchers analyzed more than 84,000 social interactions between almost 250 vervet monkey individuals collected over nine years in three neighboring groups. Their analyses revealed an unexpected difference: in one of the groups, dubbed Ankhase (AK), the monkeys were more likely than in the other two groups to trade off when grooming each other. Unique Social Dynamics within Groups “We found that individuals in one group—AK—display significantly more affiliative behaviors than in the two other groups, and this difference was stable over 9 years of study,” Kerjean says. The AK group was not only more social than the other two, but they also exchanged grooming more reciprocally. When a monkey groomed another monkey, that monkey would usually repay the favor. As a result, grooming was exchanged more fairly in AK compared to the other two groups. “You can think about it like massage exchanges between individuals,” Kerjean explained. “If I give you a massage 100 times a year but you only did it two times, I may feel that our relation is quite unfair. That’s the kind of differences we observed between our groups.” Adaptation and Social Conformity The researchers also found that six males who moved from one group to another adapted their social interactions to better match their new groups. Those changes were also seen in both directions. Upon moving out of the AK group, males became less social and less likely to groom a partner fairly. Males leaving one of the less social groups for AK showed exactly the opposite trend. “Males adapted their sociality to the group they integrated with, which we believe is a good example of social conformity,” Kerjean says. “This normative rule—act like others—probably helps them to get better integrated in a new group. This conformity effect had been previously shown through a novel food experiment, but this is the first time that we observed that with social behavior.” The findings show that groups not only have different social traditions but that those traditions also can be stable over time in ways that are likely mediated socially. The researchers suggest that these differences are passed on through social learning, although they can’t rule out that there may be other differences in the environment at work, too. Now that they know about the existence of these social traditions, they say they’d like to learn more about how they are introduced and passed on. They note that they’re especially curious to explore the role of key individuals or leaders in pressuring newcomers to follow along.
