金谷園故址在今河南洛陽西北，是西晉富豪石崇的別墅，繁榮華麗，極一時之盛。唐時園已荒廢，成為供人憑弔的古蹟。據《晉書。石崇傳》記載：石崇有妓曰綠珠，美而艷。孫秀使人求之，不得，矯詔收崇。崇正宴於樓上，謂綠珠曰：“我今為爾得罪。”綠珠泣曰：“當效死於君前。”因自投於樓下而死。杜牧過金谷園，即景生情，寫下了這首詠春弔古之作。
