In the wake of my posting yesterday, I would like to share an anecdote of my encounter regarding 紅豆詞.
In final "test" of the music course of my junior year in high school, the teacher asked every student to sing a song, any song but the national anthem and 紅豆詞. Why not 紅豆詞? Some classmates wondered. The teacher said it is a frivolous song, categorically.
PS. In my days in that prestigious high school, it seemed the purpose of teaching and learning was only for advanced study, not a holistic and balanced education. Under such a circumstance, music, fine arts, and physical education became associate subjects, which earned much less attention by the school and students. It is a shame that I cannot read the musical staff or know what perspective drawing is to teach my grandchildren now.

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you that I attended the same high school and college as yours. But I did not have the same music teacher.

Mr. Zhang Shijie was the teacher of the music course. He was also the head of the prestigious Zhonghua Chorus. Chances are Mr. Zhang engaged too much of his time in the choir business, so he was absent from the class often. Even he showed up, he seldom taught us anything related to music. My memories of him was he was an enthusiastic ROC supporter and a hater of Japanese and communism, often talking about politics to us on the platform.
Since he scarcely taught us the knowledge of music, how could he verify the achievement of each student? That was why he asked us sing a song in the final "test".
