One day twenty years ago, my wife and I went to a touching movie at a theater in Taipei. I can still remember clearly that the audience of the night was less than ten people, including us.

The film of Zhang Yimou illustrates that a 13-year-old substitute teacher was ordered to take care of every student of an elementary class in some backwater area, and "Not One Less" was her mission. The young teacher was played by a totally amateur actress, Wei Minzhi. In fact, Wei was a country girl from a poor family herself. With a tanned face, she is not a pretty girl at all, which made her not become a promising "Mou star".
