Hello everyone! Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Garrett. And my name is Esther.
Today our topic is animals. Yes, and our title is Are You Afraid of Sharks? What’s your answer, friends? Right. Sharks are very large fish, and they have sharp teeth.
I am afraid of sharks. And I think that’s normal. I think most people are afraid of sharks.
Sharks are some of the biggest fish in the ocean, and there aren’t too many enemies they have. They’re kind of like the bosses of the ocean. Right.
When you hear about sharks, sometimes you might hear scary stories of people being killed because a shark bit them or ate them. But of course, it’s important to know that sharks, for the most part, aren’t very dangerous. You need to be careful around them, but they don’t often attack people.
So make sure you don’t go around telling people that we should kill all the sharks. That is true. We’re going to learn a lot about sharks today.
Garrett, can you help us?
Sharks live in every ocean. These large fish are strong and have sharp teeth. They use them to catch their food.
Sharks swim very well and use their fins to move through the water. Some people are afraid of sharks because of their sharp teeth. They worry about sharks when they swim.
Sharks can attack people, but that doesn’t happen very often, and it’s usually by mistake. Thanks, Garrett. I’m glad to know that you told us that they usually attack people by mistake, so not on purpose.
Now let’s go to our Find It question. Our question is, what do sharks have? What do sharks have? The answer will be in today’s lesson. Now let’s go over to Sonia to learn today’s keywords.
What happened yesterday in Florida? I’m afraid of sharks. That doesn’t happen very often. But what Sarah cares about is that they have big, sharp teeth.
The adjective sharp is sharp. And the noun tooth is teeth. Its plural form is t-e-e-t-h, teeth.
Julie thinks sharks need those teeth because they use them to catch their food. The verb catch is to catch. Are they okay? Yes, but they’re in the hospital.
I’m afraid of sharks. I’m not. They’re interesting animals.
I don’t think so. They can see, hear, and smell really well. Sometimes they attack people.
Yes, but that doesn’t happen very often. Julie seems a bit worried about something. Right.
She uses the word terrible. Terrible means something is very bad. If something really bad happened, we can say that was terrible.
Sarah wants to know what happened. Julie tells us that she was just reading the news. The news tells us about what is happening in our country and around the world.
What did she read in the news? Well, she read that a shark attacked someone yesterday in Florida. Florida is a part of the United States, and it’s surrounded by a lot of ocean. There, sometimes, you might hear about a shark attack.
Right. Sharks are very large fish. They’re the topic of today’s lesson.
And yes, sharks have sharp teeth, so they might attack people, sometimes for different reasons. Sarah is not happy to hear about this. She wants to know if that person is okay, but she’s not sure who the person is that was attacked, so she uses the pronoun they and asks, Are they okay? Sonia, can you help us more with pronouns like this?
Because she’s not sure if the person is a boy or a girl, she uses they instead.
B says, She must be having a wonderful time. Let’s look at the case of a single animal. A says, Because she doesn’t know if the cat is male or female, she uses it instead.
It keeps meowing at us.
Thank you, Sonia. Thankfully, that person is okay.
And that person is in the hospital. Yes, they’re in the hospital getting better. And Sarah shares that she is afraid of sharks.
Esther, what are you afraid of? I’m afraid of sharks and water. Yes, if you are afraid of something, it means you are scared of something. Garrett, what are you afraid of? What am I afraid of? I don’t know.
Maybe a burning building? Probably a lot of things. Well, friends, I’m afraid of sharks. It’s today’s calendar phrase.
Do you like sharks? No, I’m afraid of sharks. Sharks are interesting animals. I’m afraid of sharks.
Sharks are cool. I’m afraid of sharks. Sharks have big sharp teeth.
I know. That’s why I’m afraid of sharks. Well, Julie is not afraid of sharks, she says.
She thinks they’re really interesting animals. I agree with Julie. Right.
If you think something is interesting, you want to know more about it. Well, Sarah doesn’t think so. No, she doesn’t.
Julie says that sharks can see, hear, and smell really well. That’s how they find their way around the giant ocean they live in. But Sarah knows that sometimes they attack people.
Now, if someone attacks you, it means that they hurt you. Yeah, they go after you and try to hurt you. But we hear that doesn’t happen very often.
If something happens, well, it comes true. It happens. Now, friends, let’s go to a quick break.
We’ll be right back just after this. Welcome back to the show, everyone. Let’s talk more about one of our keywords, the word happen.
Say I am thinking about making cookies. Has that happened? Have I made cookies? Not yet. So when you use happen, you talk about something that is or has been.
Yeah, you actually did it. Or it actually came true in the world. Friends, let’s go back to our conversation.
What’s so interesting about sharks? They look cool and they swim so well. They use their fins to move through the water. But they have big, sharp teeth.
They need them. They use them to catch their food. What do sharks eat? Fish and other things, not people.
No, when they attack people, it’s often by mistake. Remember, everyone, Julie said she thinks sharks are interesting. She likes to know about them.
But Sarah wants to know what exactly is so interesting about them. Right, why does Julie want to know so much about sharks? Well, this word, interesting, is a good word to learn. We’ll learn how to use that word and the word interested with Sonia.
What’s so interesting about sharks? I read an interesting book on robots. The museum has many interesting pieces of art. Are you interested in our new product? Are you interested in our new product? Or That girl is interested in stars and planets.
It’s a word that’s become much more popular in recent years to describe things that we like the look of or the sound of. And yes, sharks do look cool. They use their fins to move through the water.
Esther wants a fin. A fin is a special part of the body on fish. They’re almost like little flippers.
And when fish move their fins, they can move through water. Right. Animals like sharks might have fins on the back of their body, by their tail, and on the sides.
Now friends, this takes us to our find it question. What do sharks have? They have big, sharp teeth. Hmm, big, sharp teeth.
Yes, teeth are what we use to chew things with. We use them when we’re eating food. You have one tooth, or more than one teeth.
Right, and sharks have sharp teeth. Now if something is very sharp, it means that it can cut through things very well. We often use this word when we talk about a knife.
We can say, this is a sharp knife. It cuts well. A good new knife should be very sharp.
Well, sharks need sharp teeth. They need them to catch their food. Right.
When you catch something, it means that you get something. Think about a ball. When you catch a ball, it means you are getting that ball.
Right. And the sharks want to catch fish or other things with their teeth. They bite down and hope those things don’t swim away.
Right. Well, Julie knows that sharks eat fish and other things. But because Sarah is afraid of sharks, she says not people.
Not people? No, sharks do not eat people. When they attack people, it’s often by mistake. Right.
If you do something by mistake, it means you don’t do it on purpose. It is an accident. These sharks don’t want to go and attack people or hurt them with their sharp teeth.
It’s by mistake. They might think the person is actually a different kind of animal. Right.
Friends, now let’s go and review today’s keywords. Here’s your first keyword for today. Shark.
Shark. Are there sharks in the water here? Sharp. Sharp.
These rocks are very sharp. Tooth. Tooth.
Did you brush your teeth today? Catch. Catch. They are trying to catch the dog.
Afraid. Afraid. Tammy is afraid of snakes.
Happen. Happen. What happened to you? Friends, those are today’s keywords.
You’re doing a great job. Keep practicing. And now it’s your turn.
Today’s words are sharks, sharp, tooth, catch, afraid, and happens. Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence. First one.
This knife cuts well. It’s... You need an adjective here. Great job.
This knife cuts well. It’s sharp. Next.
The little girl lost a... Today. It’s a noun. Good answer.
The little girl lost a tooth today. Next. He forgot his phone? That never... That’s right.
He forgot his phone? That never happens. Next. What are you of? It’s another word for scared.
Correct. What are you afraid of? Next. Some are really big.
This is an animal in the ocean. Good job. Some sharks are really big.
Last one. Did you... Any fish in the lake? You’re right. Did you catch any fish in the lake? And did you guess all the correct words? Wonderful.
Remember to come again for your turn. Oh. This is terrible.
What, Julie? I was just reading the news. A shark attacked someone yesterday in Florida. Oh, no.
Are they okay? Yes, but they’re in the hospital. I’m afraid of sharks. I’m not.
They’re interesting animals. I don’t think so. They can see, hear, and smell really well.
Sometimes they attack people. Yes, but that doesn’t happen very often. What’s so interesting about sharks? They look cool and they swim so well.
They use their fins to move through the water. But they have big, sharp teeth. They need them.
They use them to catch their food. What do sharks eat? Fish and other things, not people. No.
When they attack people, it’s often by mistake. One, two. Let’s review.
No, thanks. I don’t want to review today. You don’t want to review? No.
I want to go swimming. Swimming? Yes. I want to go swimming in the ocean.
The ocean? Aren’t you afraid of sharks? No. I like sharks. Sharks are cool.
Sharks are cool? Oh, yeah. They’re good swimmers. They use their fins to move around.
That’s true. But sharks have sharp teeth. I know.
They use them to catch their food. Yes. Sharks eat fish and other things.
That’s right. But they don’t usually eat people. Sometimes sharks attack people.
That’s not cool. Do they attack people very often? No, but it happens sometimes. That’s kind of scary.
I know. Do you still want to swim in the ocean? No. A swimming pool is safer.
Yeah. Yeah. Let’s go swimming.
Let’s go swimming. I just want to see I just want to see All the wonderful things All the wonderful things That the season brings That the season brings Like a big bright sun And the fresh spring rain That falls so softly On the plants Spring, spring, spring is here Flowers are blooming everywhere Spring, spring, spring is here What a beautiful time of the year Spring, spring, spring is here Flowers are blooming everywhere Spring, spring, spring is here What a beautiful time of the year Now friends, many, many years ago a famous movie came out and it’s a great movie. That movie is called Jaws.
It’s about an angry shark that is attacking people. Ever since that movie came out many people were afraid to swim in the ocean. Right.
I wonder if Sarah watched that movie. Maybe that’s why she’s so afraid of sharks. But remember, they don’t often attack people.
Now friends, we hope to see you again tomorrow right here on Let’s Talk in English. Goodbye.

Hello, friends. Welcome to Let’s Talk in English. My name is Esther.
And my name is Garrett. Thanks for joining us, friends, for an animals lesson. And the name of our lesson is Are You Afraid of Sharks? Are you afraid of sharks? Well, most of us probably are.
Sharks look cool, but also kind of scary. Right. They swim very well, but they have very sharp teeth.
They use those teeth to attack and catch the food they want to eat. Mostly that’s fish and other things that live in the ocean. Right.
And many people are afraid of sharks. When they go swimming, they’re afraid they might get attacked by a shark. But shark attacks don’t happen very often.
So you usually don’t need to be afraid of them. But if there’s a big shark in the ocean, you might not want to get in and swim. Right.
Friends, now let’s go to today’s find it question. Our question is, what happens when a shark’s tooth falls out? What happens when a shark’s tooth falls out? Find the answer in today’s lesson. Now, let’s go learn today’s keywords.
Greg说,最近在海生馆有个很有趣的鲨鱼展。 可是Susie说,有很多人都觉得鲨鱼很可怕。
Many people think they are scary. 形容词scary就是可怕的。
Greg问Susie是否知道鲨鱼有很多排的牙齿?
Did you know that sharks have many rows of teeth? Means the
row就是一排的排。 而当有一颗牙齿掉了, 另一颗就会往前挪去取代它。
When one tooth falls out, another one moves forward to replace it.
副词forward就是向前。 水中只要有一滴血, 鲨鱼在四分之一英里外就能闻到味道。 Sharks can smell just a drop of blood in the water from a quarter mile away.
名词blood就是血。 听到大白鲨比较会攻击人, Susie说可能不会再去海里游泳了。
但是Greg告诉她不必太害怕, 闪电造成的死亡人数比被鲨鱼咬死的还要多。
More people are killed by lightning than by sharks.
动词kill就是杀死。
We’re talking about the aquarium. I love visiting those places.
Right. This is a place where you can go see lots of sea animals like fish, dolphins, and sometimes even sharks. Right.
Sometimes at an aquarium, there are even sea animals that you can pet. You can touch them with your hands. And they have so many fun colors.
Well, Greg wants to know if Susie’s been to the aquarium this spring. Yes. We’re talking about spring because it is April, and April is a month in the spring.
Susie says that she hasn’t been to the aquarium, but she wants to know why Greg is asking this question. He says they have a new shark exhibit that’s really interesting. Remember, an exhibit is a special show that you can find at a museum, a zoo, or a place like an aquarium.
Right. And Susie knows some things about sharks. She says they are amazing animals, but some people think they’re scary.
Yes. This word scary is very similar to the word we learned yesterday, afraid. If something is scary, you might be afraid of it.
It makes you feel scared. These are all similar words. Right.
Why do people think sharks are scary? That’s because of their sharp teeth. Right. When people see those teeth, they think they are scary.
Greg asks, did you know that sharks have many rows of teeth in their mouths? Right. Not just one row. We use this word when we talk about people.
When people are sitting in lines, we can call those lines rows. Yeah. Think about the last time you went to a movie theater.
There are many rows that people sit in, one after another. Well, people just have one row of teeth. Sharks are different, though.
Right. They have many rows of teeth. Susie wants to know how many teeth do sharks have? As many as 3,000 at one time. Let’s go to Sonia.
Susie wants to know how many teeth do sharks have? Greg says, as many as 3,000 at one time. As many as 3,000 at one time.
Pinyin at one time has two meanings. The first meaning is at the same time. Let’s look at an example.
Our dog had six puppies at one time.
我们的狗一次生了六只小狗。
或是,
I bought all the groceries for the week at one time.
我把整星期的食物用品一次买齐。
At one time 的另一个意思是过去一度。
来看例句 Wendy and I were colleagues at one time.
Wendy 和我过去是同事。
或是
Someone lived in that house at one time.
过去有人住在那间房子。
Thank you, Sonia. Well, friends.
It’s time now to answer our find it question. What happens when a shark’s tooth falls out? Another one moves forward to replace it. Moves forward means moves to the front to replace or take the place of that tooth.
Yeah. It moves forward or toward the front. Remember, there are more than one rows.
So it goes to the next row. And that tooth, the other one will replace, will take the place of the one that was fallen or lost. Well, friends.
This is amazing and very interesting. Let’s go now to a quick break. We’ll be right back.
Just after this. Welcome back to the show, everyone. There are lots of simple questions we ask when getting to know someone.
Like what’s your favorite food? And what’s your favorite color? But what about what do you think is scary? Right. If you really want to know someone and you think they will be comfortable to answer that question, then ask them that question. What are you afraid of? Or what do you think is scary? But don’t use their answer to make them more scared.
Unless, you know, they’ll find it funny. Now, let’s go back to our lesson. Sharks can smell just a drop of blood in the water from a quarter mile away.
I know. They not only smell well, but they also sense things they can’t see. Do you know how many kinds of sharks there are? No.
How many? About 500. I know about the great white shark. They attack more people than any other kind of shark.
I may not swim in the ocean again. Don’t be too afraid. More people are killed by lightning than by sharks.
All right. Esther, what did we learn from Greg about sharks? Well, we learned that they have very good noses. They can smell just one drop of blood in the water from a quarter mile away.
That is amazing. Blood is that red liquid that comes out of your body when you get hurt. There’s blood all through your body that helps you stay healthy and alive.
But when an animal in the ocean gets hurt, it might have some blood come out of it. Yes. And they not only smell well, they also sense things they can’t see.
They sense things or have a feeling of where things are, maybe through feeling it in the rest of their body. Greg wants to know how many kinds of sharks there are. How many kinds of sharks are there? That’s today’s Calendar Phrase.

How many kinds of sharks are there?
How many kinds of sharks are there?
鲨鱼有多少种类呢?
How many kinds of sharks are there? Well, there’s baby shark.
How many kinds of sharks are there?
And there’s mama shark.
How many kinds of sharks are there?
And there’s daddy shark.
But how many kinds of sharks are there?
How many?
Well, there are hundreds of kinds of sharks.
So I could sing all day. Please don’t.
No, please. It’s enough. It’s enough.
How many kinds of sharks are there?
How many kinds of sharks are there?
鲨鱼有多少种类呢?

Well, Greg wants to know if Susie knows the answer. How many kinds of sharks are there? Right. And we can ask many questions starting with the words how many.
Sonia, can you help us?
Greg 问 Susie 你知道鲨鱼有多少种类吗? Do you know how many kinds of sharks there are? 句中how所引导的名词 只具为know的受词 因此为间接问句 主词和动词顺序有别于直接问句 来看当间接问句的例句 Can you count how many dogs there are? 你能不能数得出有几只狗? 或是 Do you remember how many students there were? 你记不记得有多少学生? 再来看直接问句的句型 How many books are there on the shelf? 书架上有多少本书? 或是 有多少人参加那个会议?
Thank you, Sonia. Susie does not know the answer to Greg’s question. So she asks him how many.
About 500. That’s about how many kinds of sharks there are. It’s a lot.
And Susie knows about one kind, the great white shark. Right. This kind is very famous because they attack more people than any other kind of shark.
And they’re really big. So Susie says she may not swim in the ocean again. She’s really afraid of these.
But Greg reminds her not to be too afraid. He can also say don’t be too scared. Right.
She doesn’t need to be afraid of great white sharks. Why is that? Well, more people are killed by lightning than by sharks. Right.
Lightning is that bolt of electricity from the sky when there is a storm. And more people are killed. That means more people no longer live by lightning than by sharks.
They die. But do a lot of people die or are killed by lightning? No, not at all. That’s why it’s okay to go for a swim in the ocean.
Right. But be careful. If you hear about a shark nearby then stay out of the water when the government tells you to do so.
Now friends, let’s go and review today’s key words. Here’s our first key word. Scary.
Scary. That dog is really scary. Row.
Row. How many rows of chairs do we need? Forward. Forward.
Please move forward slowly. Blood. Blood.
He has blood on his face. Kill. Kill.
Some plants are killed by the hot sun. Friends, those are today’s key words. Keep practicing.
And now it’s your turn. Today’s words are scary, row, forward, blood, and killed. Now it’s your turn to use them in a sentence.
First one. The children lined up in a... You need a noun here. Good job.
The children lined up in a row. Next. Was the storm very... You need an adjective here.
Correct. Was the storm very scary? She needed after the accident. You need this to live.
You’re right. She needed blood after the accident. Next.
Was anyone in the accident? We never want this to happen. Was anyone killed in the accident? Last one. She’s coming now.
You got it. She’s coming forward now. You did a great job, friends.
Be sure to join me next time for your turn. Have you been to the aquarium this spring, Susie? No, I haven’t. Why? They have a new shark exhibit that’s really interesting.
Sharks are amazing animals, but many people think they’re scary. That’s because of their shark teeth. Did you know that sharks have many rows of teeth in their mouths? How many teeth do they have? As many as 3,000 at one time.
When one tooth falls out, another one moves forward to replace it. That’s amazing.
One, two, let’s review. David, guess what? I saw a shark. Oh, wow.
Were you scared? No, I wasn’t scared at all. Why not? Because the shark was at the aquarium. Oh, that’s a safe place to see sharks.
Yeah, it’s very safe and very interesting. So, tell me. Tell me about the aquarium.
They have a new shark exhibit. Great. So, what did you learn? Sharks have sharp teeth.
Lots and lots of sharp teeth. How many? Maybe as many as 3,000. Wow, that’s amazing.
And sharks can smell blood from far, far away. How far away? A quarter of a mile away. Oh, wow.
That’s amazing. And there are many kinds of sharks. How many are there? Well, hundreds and hundreds.
Oh, wow. That’s amazing, too. Yeah, sharks are really amazing and interesting, but sometimes scary.
But not at the aquarium. No, that’s a fun place. Hi, everyone.
Welcome to What’s Next? My name is Selah. And today, let’s look at some pictures that tell a story. After the first two pictures, let’s guess what will happen next.
Are you ready? Let’s go. Let’s start off with a peaceful picture. A man sitting in a boat.
That’s nice. And what is he doing? Oh, he is fishing. He looks a little bored while he waits.
I don’t think there are any fish in this water. Maybe he needs to wait a little longer. Will he get a fish? Let’s find out.
All right. Now something is happening under the boat. It looks like the fishing line has caught something.
Whatever it is, it’s fighting. The man is having a hard time pulling it out of the water. He better be careful or he might fall out of the boat.
What do you think it is? Is it a fish or a shoe? What will happen next? A shark? What? Where did that shark come from? I thought the man was fishing in a lake. But there are no sharks in the lake. So this must be in the ocean.
Now this is a big surprise. The man caught a scary shark. The man is so shocked that he might fall into the water.
Uh-oh. Funny how so many things can change from peaceful to crazy. Well, that was scary.
I thought fishing was a calm and safe activity. I guess not. I sure hope that man is safe.
Sharks are very dangerous animals. Thanks for joining me today on What’s Next. While I don’t want to get in the ocean and swim with sharks, it’s fun to see them at the aquarium or in an interesting TV show.
Right. It sure is fun to learn about sharks. I want to learn about their teeth, their rows and rows of teeth.
Right. And remember, there are so many different kinds, and each one is a little different. Friends, we’ll see you again tomorrow.
That’s right here on Let’s Talk in English. Goodbye.
