Getting Started With Stargazing觀星入門(上)
空中英語教室20240506
hello there and welcome to studio classroom
we’re happy that you are here today
my name is Gabe
and i’m Ann Marie and our lesson today is all about stargazing
the activity or just the act of looking up into the sky
and admiring the beauty that you see up there
Ann Marie do you enjoy stargazing
i really do enjoy stargazing whenever i think of stargazing
i automatically think of where i grew up in the states in Ohio
very far outside of the city so there wasn’t a lot of city glow
that would keep you from
seeing a lot of things in the night sky
it sounds like there was not a lot of light pollution right
that’s right there’s no city glow
oh man
i’m kind of jealous actually
because growing up here in the big city
most of my life
i didn’t see a lot of stars when i looked up in the night sky
and still don’t to this day however
friends it is still possible to go stargazing
and sometimes you have to travel somewhere special to do that
but you may be curious about how to get started do
you have to do anything special
what we’re going to find out in our lesson
today getting started with stargazing
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
getting started with stargazing
a beginner’s guide to the night sky what is higher than Taipei
101 deeper than
the Pacific Ocean and older than mount Everest
the night sky gazing at that vast dome of darkness
studded with dots of light
should make you want to become an amateur astronomer
so here’s how
hi everyone welcome to language lab i’m Jack
我们先来看动词stud
意思呢是用什么来点缀或是不满
来看几个例句
the skirt of Marcy’s dress was started with pearls
Marcy的裙子上镶满了珍珠
或者是
bright flowers studded the hillsides of the Mountains
鲜艳的花朵布满了山坡
stud也可以当名词
意思是钉状的首饰
譬如
Sandra bought a beautiful pair of Diamond studs for her wedding
Sandra为自己的婚礼
买了一对漂亮的镶钻耳环
thank you Jack
and some people might say Jack is a stud
because he’s a handsome guy well
let’s get into our lesson
today we see getting started with star gazing
just first of all get started sometimes
we just say that when we are about to begin a project
or about to do something for the first time hey guys
let’s get started
stop talking let’s get started
that’s right we can also use get started in the way
we see in our article here
which means to begin to do a hobby
so maybe you want to get started with playing the piano
you would need to make sure
you have a way to practice
and get all of the books that you need to learn
that’s how you
would get started
but here
we’re going to find out how to get started with stargazing
we read a beginner’s guide to the night sky
what is higher than Taipei 101
deeper than the Pacific Ocean and older than mount Everest well
that would be the night sky
that’s right well
let’s take a look at this first sentence here first of all
when i see a building like Taipei 101
i think of the word tall
we talk about buildings as being very tall right
however you see what is higher than type a101 well
that is because the answer is the night sky
and we talk about the sky being very high up right
it’s very high up
it’s out there something is high up in the sky but yes
what is the difference between tall and high
when would you use tall
when would you use high
if something is very narrow and thin
then we might say it is tall but if it is wider than the height
then we might use the word high
that’s why we talk about a very high mountain
something great for you to know friends all right
we read on here gazing at that vast dome of darkness
studded with dots of light
should make you want to become an amateur astronomer
all right let’s first look at that word gazing
if you’re gazing at something
you are looking at it
but you’re not necessarily looking at it in a very
focused way have you ever gazed out the window during class
when you felt a little bored
you’re not really focusing on anything in particular necessarily
but you’re looking in that direction oh
that reminds me of the Chinese phrase fat die
when you just kind of look off into nowhere
and people might wave their hand in front of your eyes
and say hey come on
Gabe wake up right
sometimes we use the word stare in that situation as well
you’re just staring also
when i think of the word gazing
i think of doing what
David Morton is talking about in our lesson today
and that is enjoying or admiring something but yeah like
Anne Marie said
there’s no specific direction
maybe you’re not there for a certain period of time right
you’re just kind of letting your eyes wander
or go from place to place
well we also see the word amateur here in this sentence
and
the word amateur is just the opposite of the word professional
you don’t get paid to do it
and maybe you just do it for fun for example
someone might be an amateur photographer
but amateur also has another meaning as well
if you say the phrase oh
she’s an amateur what does that make you think of Gabe
yeah because of the way
you said it it kind of has a negative meaning it
means that person is definitely not professional
and they really don’t know what they’re
doing or don’t know what they’re talking about
when it comes to this activity
maybe they enjoy doing it
but that person is an amateur so again the idea of an amateur
in general though is that you do something for the love of it
not necessarily to make money
and if you are not an astronomer like our lesson
says but you want to get started enjoying the stars in the sky
then you can do some amateur stargazing
and we read here so here’s how
let’s continue with our lesson right now and find out
getting started with stargazing
first off what is astronomy
simply put it’s the study of the physical universe
beyond earth’s atmosphere
and it includes stargazing for thousands of years
humans have gazed at the wonder of the night sky
for very practical reasons
what sailors and travelers did was use stars
as their gps system to find their way
farmers used stars to determine the best times to plant
and harvest their crops
and people still use stars
today perhaps less practically to learn
what sort of romantic partner would best suit them
接下来看Astronomy这个名词
意思呢是天文学
例如growing up
Benjamin enjoyed learning about stars and planets
so he decided to major in Astronomy at university
班哲明长大后
很喜欢学习有关星星和行星的知识
所以决定在大学主修天文学
或是Julie’s passion for astronomy led
her to spend many nights
gazing at the
stars and thinking about the mysteries of the universe
Julie对天文学的热爱
使他在无数个夜晚凝望星空
思考宇宙的奥秘

thank you very much Jack well
our lesson continues here first off
what is astronomy
so earlier
we were talking about how you can get started with stargazing
and then you see these words first off
this is another way of saying these
are the first things that you can do
or maybe you want to share the first reason for doing something
however
i might even use another phrase here because it sounds like
David is trying to establish
what you really need to get in your mind first
so i might use the phrase first things first
this is what you really need to do first
this should be your priority
that’s a great phrase first things first so what is astronomy
there’s a definition for it in our next sentence
simply put that means said in a simple way
it’s the study of the physical universe
beyond earth’s atmosphere there’s your definition and this
includes stargazing
that’s right so simply put as Emory
said it’s an easy way to describe something
or define something this is the easy definition of astronomy
what astronomers do right
this is the branch of science that
they are studying um
and it includes star gazing for thousands of years
humans have gazed at the wonder of the night sky
for very practical reasons now
you see that phrase to gaze at the wonder of something
and it’s true
we could talk about the wonder of the beautiful
scenery around us
or the wonder of the sky above us
you can gaze in wonder at something
that means you have that same awe
or amazement when looking at it
that’s right
we also see the word practical in this sentence now
if you do something for a practical reason it usually
means you’re doing it
because you need to
or because something has some type of use
you are not doing it for fun
you are not doing it
just because you want to there is a reason you are doing it
now things can be practical or impractical as well
i use this a lot of times to talk about clothing items
maybe i have a favorite pair of shoes
and they’re nice to look at
but they’re really not very practical that probably means that
maybe they have heels on them
and you can’t wear them everywhere
or maybe they’re not very comfortable
it’s not very practical to go hiking in high heels no
it’s not no not at all
even though they may look nice when people wear them elsewhere
anyway so
we’re talking about the practical reasons for studying the sky
right what
sailors and travelers
did was use stars as their gps system to find their way
we all know what a gps system is these days
with Google Maps and other machines
like that that help us along our way
but what does it mean to find your way
well if you find your way
it means figure out where you’re trying to go sometimes
when you go to a new city or a place
you haven’t been before
it’s sometimes hard to find your way to the place
you’re trying to go
we read on here
farmers used stars to determine the best times to plant
and harvest their crops again
very practical reasons people still use stars
today
perhaps less practically to learn what sort of romantic partner
would best suit them
this type of thing is not a part of astronomy is it and Maria
it’s a related word right
no this is a part of astrology
and that’s the idea of depending on what time of year
or what time of the month you were born
you have a different star sign attached to your birthday
that’s right people study stars for the purpose of seeing
how they relate to people
and how they can affect our relationships and things like that
you might hear
someone say oh
what’s your sign
that’s a very popular question around here
they’re asking about your astrological sign well
we have more to learn about astronomy and stargazing right
after today’s infocloud
hello friends
welcome to infocloud
hey Rex
i heard John is moving to Japan i know
he always wanted to live and work there
yeah John has stars in his eyes when he talks about it
but i try to warn him working
there is totally different than going there
for vacation people in Japan are very hard working
John can be a little lazy at times
he might have a hard time working there
the reason i said
John has stars in his eyes is
because John is overly optimistic the expression
to have stars in one’s eyes
can also describe a person
who thinks highly of another person for example
those boys have stars in their eyes when Sarah is around
because Sarah is very pretty
when someone has stars in their eyes
they are usually overly hopeful
or optimistic about someone or something
当一个人对于某件事情非常乐观
充满期待
你可以用今天分享的用语
has stars in someone’s eyes
来形容has stars in someone’s eyes
字面上是眼睛闪烁着星光
通常是用来形容过度乐观的态度
例如John对于即将到日本工作
感到极度兴奋
你就可以说John has stars in his eyes
这个用语
也可以形容对于某个人
充满着浪漫的感受
he has stars in his eyes when Sarah is around
Sarah在的时候
他整个眼睛都亮起来了
这就是今天的INFO cloud
我们下次云端见
getting started with stargazing
you may think
that an aspiring stargazer’s first step is to buy a telescope
but think again you already have the best tools for the job
your eyes simple
sweet naked eye
stargazing is the best way to get started purchase a star chart
if you want a map of which stars
you can see in your hemisphere
and when you are ready for some magnification
a humble pair of binoculars will do the trick
接着来看名词magnification
意思呢是放大
例如
the scientist changed the magnification on the microscope
to get a clearer image of the cells
she was studying
这为科学家
调整了显微镜上的放大倍率
以获得更清晰的细胞图像
magnification的动词是magnify
意思也是相同的
例如be careful what you say up on stage
because the microphone really magnifies voices
在舞台上讲话时要小心
因为microphone会放大音量
magnified过去分词
magnified可以当形容词用
意思是放大的
譬如the doctors looked through the microscope
to study the magnified cancer cells
医生们透过显微镜
观察癌细胞的放大影像
最后来看do the trick这个片语
意思呢是奏效
起了作用
例如if your computer is running slow
sometimes restarting
it can do the trick
and improve its performance
如果你的电脑跑的很慢
有时候重新启动就可以改善效能
或者是bird was feeling a little under the weather
but a hot cup of tea and some rest did the trick and
he began to feel better bird感到有点不舒服
但一杯热茶和一些休息很管用
他开始觉得好一点了
再来看一句
the bicycles chain was making a noise
but a little oil did the trick
and it was working smoothly again in no time
自行车的链条发出噪音
但加一点油就能解决
它很快又能顺畅运作了
ah
thank you very much
Jack very well done there in the language lab friends
we see two different objects here in this section
one is a telescope that is something kind of like you see
in my hand
little kids like to make telescopes out of paper like this right
and Marie kind of pretending to be a pirate yeah
i guess so it doesn’t work like an actual telescope
because it doesn’t really magnify anything though no
you better be happy about that it doesn’t magnify anything no
because there are no lenses here in this
rolled up piece of paper right however
that’s the idea you’re trying to make something bigger
tele means distance and scope means to see
so you’re trying to see something that is very far
away later on in this section
we did see the phrase or the word binocular
and these are binoculars you see the letters bi there
that means there are two okay
so there are lenses for both eyes
that is a little bit of the difference
between a telescope and binoculars
all right well
we read here
you may think that
an aspiring stargazer’s first step is to buy a telescope
but think again now what is an aspiring stargazer
well someone who is aspiring to do something
is someone who is directing their hopes or ambitions towards
becoming a certain type of person
so someone could be an aspiring musician
someone could be an aspiring doctor
it’s basically something that you want to become
that’s right what do you aspire to be
you are an aspiring something right
so do you need to buy a telescope
no think again that means you can reconsider actually
you don’t need to you already have the best tools for the job
your eyes simple
sweet naked eye stargazing is the best way to get started
i don’t usually think of my eyes as naked
but it’s true if i’m not using glasses or contact lenses
or i don’t have a telescope
or a microscope that i’m using my naked eye that’s right
here’s another example of how to use that phrase naked eye
friends Bacteria cannot be seen with the naked eye
you need a microscope to see bacteria well
we keep reading here
purchase a star chart if you want a map of which stars
you can see in your hemisphere
a speaking of hemisphere heme is one of those weird words
but it means half basically
and the world is divided into different hemispheres
we talk about the northern hemisphere
that is everything above the equator
and the southern hemisphere
everything below the equator and of course
the eastern and western hemispheres as well all right
when you’re ready for submagnification
a humble pair of binoculars will do the trick
the word humble is really interesting their friends
because you might first think of a humble person
someone who is not proud
but here the word more means simple for example
you could also use this word to describe things or people
as well no insect
works harder than the humble ant speaking of people
i believe Ernest finder
has something to say about this in today’s fun fact
hello fact friends
i’m detective Ernest finder and i have a fun fact for you
today did you know that there is a common name for girls
that means star Stella
so if you see a girl and her name is Stella
that means she is a star if you call someone a star
it means they are awesome and they stand out
so you’re a star and that’s today’s fun fact
very stellar job today Ernest finder okay
friends
we do have a little quiz for you here at the end of our lesson
but it’s not a fill in the blank true or false
you need to buy
a telescope to go stargazing that would be false
we read in our lesson
that a humble pair of binoculars is enough
that’s enough
and of course
if you don’t have binoculars
you can simply use your
naked eye that is a great way to get started well
that’s all the time we have for today
but we have more to learn about stargazing next time
right here on studio classroom
Getting Started With Stargazing觀星入門(下)
Getting Started With Stargazing觀星入門(下)
空中英語教室20240507
hello there and welcome to studio classroom
my name is Gabe and i’m Ann Marie
we are continuing our lesson about star gazing
everybody should enjoy and appreciate the night sky
even if you live in the city
you probably think about going somewhere
sometimes where you can actually see more of the stars
how do you get started with stargazing
that’s what our lesson has been about
and Marie do you need a telescope
or even binoculars to get started with stargazing
no the best thing to do is just start by using your naked eye
and of course
you can get a star chart
if you would like to see
where different stars are during different times of the year
in your hemisphere yesterday
we also learned that astronomy was used in the past
for more practical reasons
sailors and travelers use stars as their gps system
and of course
today we have astrology
which is also a study of the stars for less practical reasons
although some people may say
it’s still practical for their romantic relationships
and things like that
but astrology is very different from astronomy and Marie
you mentioned a star chart
and that’s kind of what we’re getting into today
the different things that you can actually see up there
in the sky the different patterns that the stars create
let’s get into our lesson
today is a great day to learn something new
so let’s do that together
getting started with stargazing
there are some radiant asterisms
that are even visible in light polluted cities
an asterism constitutes an informal
but recognizable pattern of stars
while a constellation marks
an officially recognized star pattern
the famous summer triangle forms
an asterism with three bright stars
Denib
Vega and Altair each a main attraction in its own constellation
denib flies high as the tale of signus
the swan Vega
the brightest of the three resides in Lyra
an ancient harp
like instrument and Altair shimmers boldly in Aquila
the proud Eagle
hello everyone
welcome to language lab
i’m Jack
首先我们来看Shimmer这个动词
意思呢是闪烁
来看几个例句
as the sun set the surface of the lake
began to shimmer reflecting the colors of the evening sky
夕阳西下时
湖面上开始波光粼粼
倒映着晚霞的色彩
Shimmer也可以当名词
例如Marilyn
wore a dress with a slight shimmer that caught the light
as she danced across the room
with her handsome partner
Marilyn穿着一件会反光的闪烁洋装
与英俊的舞伴在房间里翩翩起舞
或者是the Shimmer of the candlelight created a warm
and cozy atmosphere
and a little restaurant
闪烁的烛光
为小餐馆营造出温馨舒适的氛围
thank you very much Jack
so we read here
there are some radiant asterisms
that are even visible in light polluted cities whenever
you see that word
aster you think of stars because it has to do with stars right
but what is an asterism
this is smaller than a constellation
but it is still a pattern of stars
and to be honest with you guys like
i don’t really know the difference between what
i’m looking at necessarily
i can’t tell if i’m looking at an asterism or a constellation
when i was growing up
i used to think that the little dipper
and the big dipper were constellations
but those are smaller
patterns of stars or asterisms that’s right
we read more about asterisms here in the next sentence
as well an asterism constitutes an informal
but recognizable
pattern of stars and a constellation marks
an officially recognized star pattern all right
so we see the word constitutes there
now constitutes means that something is part of a whole so
like you were saying the big and the little dipper
those are actually
part of a bigger constellation they constitute
part of i believe ursa major and ursa minor right
exactly so what does it mean to constitute something
that means it is part of something
or those little parts make up the bigger thing right
and this bigger thing generally
if we’re going to talk about
comparing one thing with another the bigger
one is usually
a constellation right
a constellation marks an officially recognized star pattern
so as amari mentioned ursa major
that is one of the constellations and the big dipper is
part is actually
the seven brightest stars in the constellation ursa major to me
it kind of reminds me of van diagrams i don’t know
if you’re familiar with those
it’s like there’s
these different circles that come together at one point right
so that one point makes them similar
but the circles are actually very different
and i think that stars can play the same role in the night sky
maybe one star might be a part of different asterisms
or different constellations well
we’re learning about another asterism here
the famous summer triangle forms
an asterism with three bright stars
denib Vega and altair
each a main attraction in its own constellation all right well
if something is the main attraction
it means that that is the thing
that everyone is focusing on if you go somewhere
and something is the main attraction it’s usually
the reason people go to that place in the first place
for example maybe at a children’s amusement park
the Ferris wheel is the main attraction
or maybe you go to a restaurant
and that restaurant is famous for a certain kind of food well
that food is the main attraction well
we read on here deneb flies high as the tale of Cygnus
the Swan Vega the brightest of the three resides in Lyra
an ancient harp like instrument
what is that harp like instrument
called well actually
it’s called a liar well
that makes sense
that’s probably where that name came from and we read here
altair shimmers
boldly in Aquila
the proud eagle
let’s continue learning with our next reading right now
getting started with stargazing
Orion the constellation named after the Greek hunter
can be found by locating the three bright stars that constitute
his belt
there’s a lot to see in Orion
but this constellation can also be used to find several
other nearby objects
follow a line
down past the belt to locate Sirius
the dog star from the canus major constellation
接下来看be named after这个片语
动词意思呢
是以什么来命名
譬如the city’s main road was named after the founding
mayor to honor his dedication
and surfaced to the community
这个城市的主要道路
是以创始市长的名字命名的
以表彰他对社区的奉献和服务
或是
the new species of butterfly was named after the scientist who
discovered it in the dance forest
这个新品种蝴蝶
是以在茂密森林中
发现它的科学家的名字命名的
再来看一句
the scholarship fund was named after the generous person
who donated the initial funds
这个奖学金基金
是以捐赠最初资金的
慷慨人士的名字命名的
thank you very much Jack
so we read here
Orion the constellation named after the Greek hunter
can be found by locating the three bright stars that constitute
his belt
so if you’re not sure where Orion is in the night sky at least
you can look for those three really bright stars
because those stars make up or constitute is belt
that’s right
and it’s very interesting because recently here in Taipei
i’ve noticed that the constellation Orion has been visible
even through the lights of the city
so that has been exciting to see
but i do only see
his belt those three that we were talking about there all right
well we read on there’s a lot to see in Orion
but this constellation can also be used to find
several other nearby objects well
if there is a lot to see in a place
that phrases just like what it sounds like
there is a lot to see
there is a lot to enjoy or a lot to experience we say
this a lot of times when we’re traveling right
if you ever come to visit Taipei
there’s a lot to see here so make sure you plan your trip well
that’s right especially
you can especially use this phrase
when maybe recommending a place to somebody else right
they say well
is it worth it should i go there on my next vacation yeah
there’s a lot to see
there’s a lot to do there’s a lot to enjoy right
and there’s a lot to observe in Orion
but this constellation can also be used to find
several other nearby objects so Orion
it sounds like Orion serves a function as well
you can use it as a base
or base starting point to find other things
in the night sky
follow a line down past the
belt to locate Sirius
the dog star from the canis major constellation
so you could follow a line down
it’s kind of like you’re tracing a line down through the sky
that’s right
i remember when i was learning astronomy in school
i believe it was sixth or seventh grade
this was one of the first things
we learned how to do was to find Orion in the night sky
because those three bright stars from his belt
really are very easy to find
and then we learned from that constellation
how to use different stars in the constellation
to point to different objects
so this is something i’ve actually done before well
you could just look for those things that really stand out
and see what you could find from those right
we’re learning here about this serious the dog star actually
this is the brightest star in the night sky and it’s from this
did i pronounce it right
the canis major constellation
yeah
that’s correct and that word canis might
make you think of the word canine
or maybe you’re not familiar with that word
but a canine is a dog right
and Marie i gotta say whoever
saw constellation shapes in the sky for the first time
i think maybe they were on drugs or something
you don’t think they look like what they are actually called
because no i looked this up
i looked up
this canis major constellation there’s only about four or five
stars as part of that constellation
but you can imagine i guess the tail of the constellation
and then the butt and like the front paw
and then the nose and it’s like well
how are you gonna imagine a whole dog from those four or five
stars very imaginative people i suppose
exactly friends
it does take an imagination to guide the world
i guess in the case of stars
what we do have more to learn right
after today’s infocloud
hello everyone
welcome to info cloud
Garrett
have you ever heard the expression to think one’s lucky stars
absolutely Rex
it means to feel grateful for one’s good fortune for example
if you narrowly avoid a car accident
you might think your lucky stars that you’re okay
that’s right Garrett
the saying comes from an old idea
that a person’s fate or destiny
are somehow connected to the stars
another star related phrase is to be written in the stars
that’s kind of the same idea
it suggests that something is destined or fated to happen right
imagine meeting a long lost friend
unexpectedly you might say the meaning was written in the stars
and then there’s
the stars have aligned
that means that everything has come together perfectly
exactly
it’s like everything has come together to make something happen
well
Rex i have to say that one time
i thought i missed a flight i was upset
but then i found out the flight was delayed so
i didn’t miss it after all
i thanked my lucky stars that day
that’s a great example
Garrett i’m glad you got on the flight
indeed Rex and friends
we hope you are thanking your lucky stars
you joined us today for infocloud until next time
keep looking up
在西方
有些流行用语是跟星星有关的
例如thank one’s lucky STARS
字面上是感谢一个人的幸运星
如果某人发生了幸运的事情
就可以用thank one’s lucky STARS
来表达感恩的心
you should thank your lucky stars for avoiding the accident
你避免了那场意外
你应该为你的好运感恩
另外
it’s written in the stars这些都写在星星上面
可以用来表达命中注定的事情
例如你碰到一位多年未见的好友
你就可以说it’s written in the stars that we met again
我们注定要在碰面
最后the stars have aligned
星星已经依序排列
可以表达万事互相效力
或是水到渠成的意思
这就是今天的Infocloud
我们下次云端见
getting started with stargazing
let your eyes drift upward past orion’s belt
and you will find Aldebaran an orange star
that is part of a constellation called Taurus
then continue past Aldebaran to find the pleiades
a Brilliant star
cluster that contains over a thousand stars
the night sky is magnificent look up
and let the cosmos speak for itself
接着来看upward这个副词
意思呢是向上的
譬如the hiker looked upward marveling
at the mountain
peak that seemed to touch the sky登山客抬头仰望
对那座仿佛触及天空的山顶发出赞叹
或是the company’s annual report
showed an upward trend in sales
which indicated a successful year
这间公司的年度报告显示
销售额往上升的趋势
表示这是成功的一年
再来看一句steadily rising upward
the hot air balloon provided the passengers
with a breathtaking view of the landscape below
热气球稳稳地向上升
让乘客们欣赏到下方壮丽的景色
最后来看cluster这个字
如果当名词
意思是一群或一丛
来看几个例句
the clear night sky
allowed the amateur astronomers to observe
a cluster of bright stars
晴朗的夜空
让业余天文学家观测到明亮的星群
或者是the bees were busy at work
moving from one cluster of flowers to another
蜜蜂们忙碌的工作
从一处花朵移到另一处花朵
cluster若当动词
是指群趣
譬如
and friends all clustered around her to see her engagement ring
and朋友们都围着他
要看他的订婚戒指
thank you very much Jack
so we read here let your eyes drift upward past orion’s belt
and you will find Aldebaran
an orange star that is part of a constellation called Taurus mm
never really noticed any orange stars in the sky
but they do say that Mars does look a little bit
more red for a planet
yeah you can definitely tell the different colors of the stars
especially if you use binoculars or a telescope
i believe i have looked at Aldebaran before
and it does really look orange
when you’re looking through a telescope
but i want to talk about this word drift here friends
this is a really interesting verb
a lot of times when i’ve used drift
i use it to talk about cars drifting off the side of the road
or out of their lane
it has the idea of moving slowly in a direction
and usually not intentionally now
as you see in our lesson
you can use intentionally sometimes
but it’s the idea of doing it very very slowly
probably
so that you can continue to find that line to the next star
i also think of someone going to sleep
when i hear this word drift
because someone could be drifting off to sleep
that means they are slowly getting into that sleep state right
they’re drifting off to sleep
but our lesson continues here
then continue past
aldebaran to find the pleiades a brilliant star
cluster that contains over a thousand stars
so we’re talking about
letting your eyes go from one place to another in our lesson
right first of all
we’re stargazing okay
we’re looking out there
and then your eyes can drift from one place to another
and then we read here continue past
that’s another kind of directional phrase another way
we could say to continue past something is to go beyond it to go
to the other side of it now
i’m really interested about the pleiades here
and i have found that star cluster before
and it is amazing
because to the naked eye or even through a telescope
it kind of just looks like a group
a very bright group of a few stars but actually
it is a cluster and there are over a thousand stars in it
and that is just fascinating to me it is amazing
and it’s really amazing to think about everything
that is out there in space
the writer Dave Morton really does enjoy space
that’s why we have quite a few space articles from him
but our lesson finishes the night sky is magnificent
it’s amazing it’s magnificent
it’s brilliant look up
and let the cosmos speak for itself of course
you do need to look up if you’re going to enjoy the night sky
but what does it mean to let something speak for itself well
if you let someone or something speak for itself
it means that you don’t need to rely on any outside information
or listen to what other people have to say about it
you can let them say what they want to say or see the thing
and let that thing tell you the information
for example
you shouldn’t believe every rumor that you hear usually
you should just let the person speak for themselves
instead of believing those rumors
and of course
we can learn a lot from astronomers and what they tell us
but we can also learn a lot
just by looking up into the night sky
let the cosmos or the universe speak for itself right now
it’s time for todays fun fact
hello fact
friends
i’m detective Ernest finder and i have a fun fact for you
today did you know that stars are made of gas
oh it’s true burning gas so does space smell
bad uh no space smells like burning metal
and some astronauts think it smells nice
they are the only ones who have smelled space
so we have to trust them and that is today’s fun fact
burning metal that is quite interesting hmm well
friends let’s continue with a little quiz close your magazine
and fill in the blank we learned about Orion today
Orion is named blank the Greek hunter
so that Greek hunter also had the name Orion
Orion is named blank on in after
or under the Greek hunter
ah he was named the stars
consolation was named after the Greek hunter yes
you are right the word is
after we talk about being named after something or someone
that means you have the same name
because of that thing or person right well
it’s been a fun
lesson and friends if you have a chance get out somewhere
where you can actually see a lot of stars in the night sky
that’s all the time we have for today
we’ll see you next
time right here on studio
