這首大家都很熟悉的蘇格蘭民謠《羅莽湖畔》


相傳是起源於一個相當悲哀的故事。





這首歌的背景是蘇格蘭人和英格蘭抗爭中的一段慘烈歷史。


1745年，蘇格蘭人第二度大規模起義反抗倫敦朝廷。


經過幾回征戰，起初蘇格蘭的軍隊一度


還打到倫敦附近，京城倫敦為之震動。


但翌年在蘇格蘭Culloden一地的決定性一役中，


蘇格蘭軍隊慘遭殲滅，


歷時逾半世紀的蘇格蘭人反抗運動也因此畫下句點。



在這場戰役中，英軍俘擄了許多蘇格蘭人，


把他們囚禁在卡萊爾(Carlisle)城堡。


不知為何，英格蘭人對待這些戰俘沒有一定懲處的標準，


任意挑選一些來吊死、任意挑選一些來釋放。


一旦獲釋的幸運者，必需靠雙腿跋山涉水自行回到蘇格蘭。



據說，蘇格蘭戰俘中有一人預感自己將屬於被處決者，


寫了這首《羅莽湖畔》，


託給一位他認為將會被釋放的牢友，


帶回去給他住在羅莽湖畔的愛人。


這首哀思悲愴，悱惻怨悼的歌謠就這樣留傳至今。
